VLC is the strongest starting point for most people who want one free desktop player for a mix of files, discs, devices, webcams, and streams. Choose mpv if you want extensive control and are comfortable configuring a player; Windows Media Player 12 is a reasonable option for familiar, everyday playback on Windows, though some formats may require extra codecs. None is a universal winner: the right choice depends on your platform, media, and preferred level of control.

At a glance: VLC vs. mpv vs. Windows Media Player 12

Player Best fit Formats and inputs Controls and setup Platform notes
VLC People who want a general-purpose player ready for varied media. VideoLAN lists files, discs, webcams, devices, and streams, alongside formats such as AVI, MP4/MOV/3GP, MKV, MPEG, and FLAC. Feature list includes hardware decoding, subtitle support, synchronization, and audio/video filters. VideoLAN describes VLC as cross-platform.
mpv People who prioritize customization and are comfortable with technical controls. The project describes support for a wide variety of formats, codecs, and subtitles; it does not provide a comparable exhaustive list in the cited project summary. Its manual documents command-line options and text configuration. The mpv project describes it as cross-platform.
Windows Media Player 12 Windows users who mainly play common files and prefer a familiar Windows player. Microsoft lists types including AVI, MPEG, MOV, MP4-family formats, AAC, MPEG-2 TS, and FLAC. Additional formats may need installed codecs. The cited format documentation does not compare its controls feature by feature with VLC or mpv. The cited Microsoft list applies specifically to Windows Media Player 12.

These are product-documentation comparisons, not independent performance or usability tests. A listed format does not guarantee every file will play: codec availability and the particular file can matter.

Which player should you choose?

Choose VLC for mixed media and a ready-to-use desktop app

VLC is a practical first choice if you regularly switch among video and audio files, subtitles, discs, streams, or connected devices. VideoLAN’s feature list covers those inputs and also calls out hardware decoding, synchronization, and filters. Its documentation describes VLC as “a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework.” See VideoLAN’s About VLC documentation and its VLC features list.

Choose mpv for configuration and fine-grained control

mpv is also free, open source, and cross-platform, and its project describes broad support for media formats, codecs, and subtitles. Its official manual puts command-line options and configuration files front and center. That makes it a natural candidate for readers who want to tailor behavior, but it does not establish that mpv is easier or harder for every person to use. Start with the mpv project site and mpv Reference Manual.

Choose Windows Media Player 12 for familiar Windows playback

If your needs are mostly common file playback and you prefer the Windows-native environment, Windows Media Player 12 may be sufficient. Microsoft’s supported-types list includes a range of common formats, while cautioning that installing codecs may extend support. The list is for Windows Media Player 12, so do not assume it describes every Windows media app or every software version. Check Microsoft’s Windows Media Player supported file types.

Format support: what the lists do—and do not—tell you

VLC: many named formats and media sources

VideoLAN names formats including AVI, MP4/MOV/3GP, Matroska (MKV), MPEG, and FLAC, as well as numerous video and audio codec families. It also lists files, discs, webcams, devices, and streams as inputs. This breadth makes VLC useful for a mixed library, but broad product claims about playing every format should not be read as a guarantee for every file on every computer. The source is a feature list, not a compatibility test of your specific media.

mpv: broad support, with specifics in its documentation

Windows Media Player 12: a documented list with a codec caveat

Microsoft lists Windows Media types as well as AVI, MPEG, MOV, MP4-family formats, AAC, MPEG-2 TS, and FLAC, among others. Microsoft also notes that additional formats might be supported after codecs are installed. A file extension alone may not tell you which codec the file contains, so a format name on the list is not an unconditional playback promise.

Ease of use and controls depend on your workflow

There is no cited head-to-head usability study that establishes one player as the easiest. The documentation does, however, point to different ways of working:

  • For an out-of-the-box general-purpose app: VLC’s documented input types and playback features suit people who want broad capability without centering their workflow on configuration.
  • For customization: mpv’s command-line flags and text configuration provide a route to fine-grained changes, particularly for technically confident users.
  • For a familiar Windows environment: Windows Media Player 12 has a published supported-format list, but the cited documentation does not establish a feature-by-feature controls comparison.

VLC’s listed controls include hardware decoding, subtitles, synchronization, and audio/video filters. Those features can help when adjusting playback, but their presence should not be confused with a comparative claim about picture quality or performance.

How to decide for a particular file or setup

  1. Identify the actual need. Note whether you need local files only, or also discs, subtitles, streams, webcams, or connected devices.
  2. Check the target platform and player version. The Windows Media Player format list cited here is specifically for version 12; VLC and mpv are described by their projects as cross-platform.
  3. Match the workflow. Try VLC for varied media and built-in controls, mpv for configuration, or Windows Media Player 12 for familiar common-file playback on Windows.
  4. Test the exact file. Use the actual file and subtitle track, if relevant, on the computer where you plan to watch it. A broad format list cannot confirm that file’s codec or local codec availability.
  5. For Windows Media Player, account for codecs. If a file does not play, consult Microsoft’s format guidance and codec caveat before concluding that the extension itself is unsupported.

What this comparison cannot rank

The cited official pages describe product features and supported types; they do not provide comparative benchmarks, market-share figures, or controlled ease-of-use results. They therefore do not establish that one player has better playback quality, uses fewer resources, or is easier for all users. Choose by documented workflow fit and verify compatibility with your own files and operating-system version.
