If VLC stops sending video to YouTube Live when your Mac display turns off, first find out whether macOS is only turning off the display or putting the whole Mac to sleep. Run a short test with the Mac kept awake while the display is allowed to go dark, then check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. If the stream continues, investigate power management; if it stops, check VLC, the source, network, and YouTube ingest.
First, distinguish display sleep from Mac sleep
A black display does not prove the Mac is asleep. Display sleep and system sleep are different states, and other apps or frameworks can affect display sleep. Apple’s AVFoundation documentation says the default for preventsDisplaySleepDuringVideoPlayback is false on macOS; that property concerns playback behavior, not VLC specifically, and does not establish why a YouTube stream stopped. Apple’s documentation also notes that other apps or frameworks may prevent display sleep.
Before changing settings, note your macOS version, Mac model, VLC version, whether the Mac is plugged in, and the time the display goes dark or the stream fails. Settings and labels vary across macOS releases, so use the options available on your Mac to keep it awake during the test; do not assume a particular System Settings path applies to every version.

- Prepare a short test broadcast. Use an unlisted stream if appropriate for your channel. Open YouTube Live Control Room before starting.
- Keep the Mac awake, but let the display turn off. Change only the sleep-related condition for this test, so the result is easier to interpret.
- Watch YouTube’s receiving side. Check whether the Live Control Room preview continues and whether stream-health messages appear at the time the display goes dark. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the incoming stream; include relevant audio and movement where possible. See YouTube’s streaming tips and stream-health guidance.
- Check from another device if you can. A separate viewer can help distinguish a local VLC display or rendering issue from a stream that viewers cannot receive.
If YouTube’s preview and health status remain normal while your local display is dark, treat the symptom as local until other evidence shows otherwise. If YouTube indicates incoming video stopped, investigate the host’s sleep state, VLC playback and output, the network, and the ingest path. These are diagnostic interpretations of the observed symptoms, not a guarantee about VLC behavior.

If the stream still stops while the Mac stays awake
Check VLC and its source/output
Confirm whether VLC’s source keeps playing locally and whether its configured output is still directed to YouTube. Record the source type and output configuration alongside the exact failure time. Do not assume a current VLC preference exists to prevent this particular interruption: a 2019 VideoLAN patch proposed removing macOS interface sleep-inhibition code, but that historical development item does not establish what a current installed release does. The patch discussion is historical context, not a current fix.
Check YouTube’s encoder setup and stream health
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key entered into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it, and replace it if it is exposed. Review YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and its recommended settings. Choose a codec and bitrate suited to the actual resolution, frame rate, and available upload bandwidth; there is no single bitrate that is right for every stream. YouTube’s current guidance includes H.264, H.265, and AV1 options.

If the symptom persists with the Mac demonstrably awake, preserve the macOS and VLC versions, source type, output configuration, YouTube health messages, and whether local VLC playback continues. YouTube describes an encoder as the software or tool that captures and compresses the feed; for software-specific problems, consult the software provider’s support guidance. Compare your installed version with the current download on VideoLAN’s official macOS download page. The page’s listing can change; the version shown in search results when checked on October 3, 2026 was VLC 3.0.23. No available evidence establishes that updating to that version fixes this sleep-related symptom.

When a standalone encoder makes sense
If the workflow must continue without a computer doing the encoding, YouTube lists standalone encoder hardware such as the AJA HELO Plus. Consider this only after identifying the requirement: compare compatible input sources, stream protocol and format, recording needs, remote monitoring, reliability, and total cost. YouTube’s listing establishes it as an option, not that it fits every setup or budget. It is not a necessary first-line purchase for an ordinary Mac sleep-setting problem.
