For a graphical setup that stays on your PC, OBS Studio is the best-documented alternative: use Media Source to loop one file, or VLC Video to play a playlist. The latter still requires VLC installed. For command-line control, FFmpeg can loop an input indefinitely, but takes more setup. If you need the computer off, StreamNeo offers cloud playlist streaming to YouTube.

There are no established comparative measurements for CPU load, power consumption, uptime, or failure rates among these options. A low-power PC may or may not handle a particular file and output configuration smoothly. Test your own machine and connection before committing to a continuous stream.
Use OBS for a graphical local setup
Loop one file with Media Source
OBS Studio’s Media Source has a Loop setting for repeating a single local file. The OBS documentation lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support and notes that hardware decoding may be available for supported media when suitable hardware is present. Availability of hardware decoding does not guarantee that a particular low-power PC can sustain your chosen stream settings.
- Install OBS Studio and open the scene you intend to stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source.
- Choose or browse to the video file, then enable Loop in the source properties.
- Confirm that the source displays and that its audio is routed as intended. Test the file from beginning through the loop point.
- Configure OBS’s streaming output with the YouTube stream details, then test the actual resolution, frame rate, audio, and motion before going live.
Media Source is for one file. If you need a sequence of different videos, use a playlist-capable source instead.

Loop a playlist with VLC Video
OBS’s VLC Video source supports a playlist, and its documented properties have Loop Playlist enabled by default. This is not a complete removal of VLC: VLC must be installed on the system. OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Install VLC and OBS with matching 64-bit architecture if you are using 64-bit OBS.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video Source from the Sources panel.
- In its properties, add the local files in the order you want them played. Check that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Preview the transitions and audio between files. Confirm that each item has compatible playback and that the playlist restarts as expected.
- Set up YouTube output in OBS and run a test stream before relying on it unattended.
OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation distinguishes the playlist-capable VLC Video source from Media Source, which is intended for a media item. The playlist route is useful if VLC’s interface is the problem, but not if your goal is to remove VLC entirely.

Use FFmpeg for a command-line workflow
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping; a loop value of 0 means no loop. This supplies the repeat behavior, not a complete ready-to-run YouTube broadcast. You still need to identify the media input, decide whether to copy or encode its audio and video appropriately, configure output settings, and send the stream to YouTube with the correct key and ingest protocol.

Because those choices depend on the source file and desired output, there is no universal command that is safe to recommend for every playlist and PC. Validate the exact FFmpeg command with a short test before using it continuously. If you are not comfortable troubleshooting media codecs, encoding, and stream output from a terminal, OBS offers more visible controls.

Set up YouTube Live and test the stream
The encoder configuration applies whether the video is played by OBS or passed through another local pipeline. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures below are YouTube Help’s H.264 recommendations on the current page accessed October 3, 2026, not estimates of what your PC can encode.

YouTube’s general encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingest, supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 options, allows up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. These are platform encoder settings; they do not promise that a low-power machine can encode at the selected quality.

- Check channel eligibility: the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says live streamers must be at least 16 and live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
- Match output to capacity: choose a supported codec, resolution, and frame rate, then ensure your sustained upload capacity can carry the configured bitrate with room for stability. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test; a speed test is a check, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
- Use the correct stream details: enter the stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat it as a credential; do not publish or share it.
- Test representative content: YouTube recommends testing before going live. Include audio and motion similar to the real playlist, because a static or silent test may not reveal problems in the actual content.
- Monitor stream health: watch YouTube’s stream health and the encoder during the test and broadcast. A continuous stream needs attention when the source stops, the connection drops, or the encoder cannot keep up.

Check the actual PC before running 24/7
No official source establishes a minimum PC specification, an energy-use figure, or a performance winner for OBS, FFmpeg, or VLC. Rather than assuming that a machine described as low-power will cope, run the exact workload you plan to use.

- Play the full media file or playlist, including transitions and audio, in the chosen source.
- Test at the intended resolution and frame rate with the encoder and codec you plan to stream.
- Check that the PC can sustain the encoder workload and that the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
- Watch for dropped frames, audio problems, source playback stopping, and YouTube stream-health warnings during a representative test.
- Test recovery steps: restart the source or encoder, and confirm you know how to restore the stream if the PC or connection fails.
- For a long-running local stream, account for the fact that the PC, its power, and its network connection must remain available. A cloud service changes that dependency but does not remove the need to check stream status.
