VideoLAN has demonstrated AI subtitle generation and translation for VLC 4.0, using local open-source models. The feature is not in the stable VLC 3.0.24 branch, and VideoLAN has not announced a firm release date.
When will VLC get AI subtitles?
VideoLAN showed the capability at CES 2025. Its event listing describes “the upcoming AI subtitle generation and translation feature that will be part of the VLC 4.0 release.” TechCrunch reported on January 9, 2025, that VideoLAN had not set a rollout date.
That makes VLC 4.0 the target, not a promise of a particular month or year. As of the VLC 3.0.24 release notice dated September 22, 2026, the stable branch lists security, codec, and subtitle-format changes but does not list AI subtitle generation.
What the demonstrated feature is supposed to do
Generate subtitles from the video’s audio
The demonstration showed VLC transcribing speech while a video plays, rather than requiring a pre-made subtitle file. A draft VideoLAN speech-to-text module based on Whisper describes attaching the generated subtitle stream to the selected audio track and buffering audio to provide context.

Translate subtitles during playback
VideoLAN presented generation and translation as part of the same VLC 4.0 feature. The demonstration indicates that translated subtitles can appear while playback continues. It does not establish which languages will be supported, how many languages can be used at once, or whether every translation will be produced with the same model.
Will VLC’s AI subtitles work offline?
The demonstrated approach is local processing: open-source AI models run on the user’s device instead of sending the video’s audio to a cloud service. Once the required model is available locally, transcription does not need an internet connection.

There is an important first-run qualification. The draft implementation says VLC can download a model when it is missing. That download would require connectivity unless the model has already been installed. VideoLAN has not published the final model-packaging or download workflow for VLC 4.0.
Can VLC generate subtitles for any video?
“Any video” describes the goal of avoiding a separate subtitle file, not a guarantee that every file, language, or recording will work equally well. The feature still depends on an audio track containing recognizable speech and on the languages and models included in the final release.

- VideoLAN has not published independent accuracy results for accents, overlapping speakers, music, noise, or poor recordings.
- Startup delay, ongoing buffering, memory use, and battery impact have not been benchmarked publicly.
- The final VLC 4.0 behavior may differ from the draft implementation.
Is the VLC Whisper feature in the stable release?
No. The VideoLAN GitLab merge request titled “Draft: stt: add speech-to-text capability with whisper (!5155)” is engineering work, not a shipped VLC 3.0 feature. It outlines a Whisper-based module that may download a model, create a subtitle stream, buffer audio, and use CoreML and Metal acceleration on Apple Silicon. Those details describe the draft proposal and should not be treated as final VLC 4.0 requirements.

What you can do in VLC today
Stable VLC already supports selecting subtitle tracks that exist in a file or have been loaded separately. During playback, use Video > Subtitle Track and choose the available track. This menu does not activate AI transcription in VLC 3.0.24; automatic generation remains a VLC 4.0 roadmap item.

What to check before relying on VLC 4.0 subtitles
- Confirm that the build is an official VLC 4.0 release rather than VLC 3.0.x.
- Check the release notes for supported languages and whether translation is included in that build.
- Find out whether the required model is bundled, downloaded on demand, or installed manually.
- Allow for hardware differences. The draft specifically mentions CoreML and Metal acceleration on Apple Silicon, but final CPU, GPU, RAM, and battery requirements are not published.
- Expect results to vary with speech clarity, background noise, accents, and multiple speakers until independent testing is available.
The practical answer
VLC is working toward built-in, local AI transcription and translation in VLC 4.0. It is not available in stable VLC 3.0.24, there is no announced launch date, and the final language support, performance, and accuracy remain undecided. For now, use an existing subtitle track; switch to VLC 4.0 only after its release notes confirm the capabilities you need.
