VITA’s 2004 VME roadmap was intended to help users extend established VME systems without abandoning backward compatibility or the long service lives common in embedded hardware. It charted a path from the parallel VME bus through faster transfer modes and switched fabrics to VXS and VPX, with different approaches to keeping legacy boards in use.
What VITA’s VME roadmap set out to do
An EE Times feature published on 16 November 2004 described VITA’s first objective as revising the VME technology roadmap for presentation at the January 2005 Bus and Boards Conference. The roadmap was meant to help users choose among VME options, steer development toward applicable technologies, demonstrate backward compatibility and recommend migration paths. That account describes the roadmap’s purpose and planned presentation; it does not establish what was ultimately presented or how the roadmap later changed.
VITA—the VMEbus International Trade Association—was described in the feature as a nonprofit organization serving vendors and users through technical, promotional and user-related work. The underlying design problem was practical: VME systems often remain in service for years, so added performance had to be weighed against board compatibility, system replacement costs and expected service life.
How VME transfer performance progressed
The roadmap distinguished improvements to the parallel bus from the addition of switched serial fabrics. The figures below are the maximum or sustained rates reported by EE Times in 2004; they are not a guarantee of application throughput.

| Option | Bus or transfer approach | Rate reported | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| VME32 | Original 32-bit VME specification | 40 Mbytes/s | Maximum theoretical bandwidth, as reported by EE Times in 2004. |
| VME64 | Adds 64-bit data capability to the parallel bus | 80 Mbytes/s | Maximum theoretical bandwidth, as reported by EE Times in 2004. |
| VME2eSST | Two-edge source-synchronous transfer | Above 300 Mbytes/s | Sustained data rates, as reported by EE Times in 2004. |
These figures describe different claims: the VME32 and VME64 numbers are theoretical maxima, while the VME2eSST figure is described as a sustained rate. They should not be treated as directly comparable measurements of a particular system or workload. The feature also said concepts existed that could take VME above 500 Mbytes/s, but presented that as potential rather than an established rate for a named implementation.
How VME moved toward switched fabrics
VITA 31: serial options alongside VME
The 2004 feature identified VITA 31 Ethernet on P0 and other serial schemes as options compatible with VME32, VME64 and VME2eSST configurations. This approach added serial connectivity without making those VME bus configurations disappear. The article did not specify a single performance figure for these options.

VITA 41 (VXS): fabric over a new P0 connection
VXS, or VME Switched Serial, paired the event-driven parallel VMEbus with switch-fabric support carried over a new P0 connection. The parallel bus could continue to handle control and maintenance traffic while the fabric served high-speed data paths. The 2004 feature listed 10 Gigabit Ethernet, PCI Express, Serial RapidIO and InfiniBand among the fabric protocols mapped for VXS.
Because VXS retained the parallel VME bus while adding a fabric connection, it represented an incremental architecture: a system could use switched-fabric capabilities without treating VME control and maintenance as obsolete. That does not, by itself, guarantee that an existing board will fit or work in a particular VXS backplane; board, slot, connector and system design still matter.

VITA 46 (VPX): a newer connector and serial-fabric architecture
VITA 46 was described in the 2004 feature as a VME PCI serial-switched-fabric approach using a new connector scheme. VITA’s VPX portal identifies VITA 46 as the formal definition of VPX and describes its basis in high-speed connectors. The stated migration idea was to support conventional parallel VME through bridging, allowing legacy VME boards to remain part of a transition rather than requiring an immediate all-at-once replacement.
Bridging is a migration mechanism, not a promise of universal plug compatibility. A VPX design’s connector and serial-fabric architecture differ from older parallel VME implementations, so a project must verify which legacy functions are bridged, how boards connect, and whether the required system-level behavior is supported.

What to compare when planning a VME migration
The roadmap is most useful as a set of trade-offs rather than a simple ladder where each newer label automatically replaces the previous one. Compare the system requirements that affect both performance and the cost of keeping equipment in service:
- Transfer needs: distinguish bus width and theoretical maximum from sustained transfer capability, and match the figure to the workload.
- Traffic architecture: determine whether a parallel bus is sufficient, whether a switched-serial fabric is needed, or whether both roles must coexist.
- Board and backplane fit: check connector type, slot arrangement and backplane support before assuming boards can move between VME, VXS or VPX systems.
- Legacy support: identify whether a proposed VXS or VPX system retains the required VME traffic directly or relies on a bridge, and verify what that bridge supports.
- Physical system constraints: account for cooling, ruggedization, enclosure design and power as well as the board-level standard.
- Lifecycle economics: weigh the cost and risk of migration against the expected service life of the installed system and the cost of maintaining legacy equipment.
