Selenium WebDriver can capture screenshots during browser tests, but screenshot capture alone is not visual regression testing. A visual test saves an accepted image as a baseline, compares later captures against it, and sends differences for review. Reliable results depend on recreating the same page state, choosing what to compare, and updating baselines only after confirming a change is intentional.

What visual testing adds to Selenium

Selenium is a browser automation project, and WebDriver is its browser-driving API; Selenium also documents IDE and Grid as separate project components. WebDriver can navigate a page, interact with it, and capture a screenshot. A visual testing workflow adds image checkpoints, stored baselines, and a process for reviewing differences. Selenium documentation and the Selenium overview describe the project and its components.

A changed screenshot is not automatically a defect. The difference may be a genuine layout regression, an intentional redesign, or unrelated variation such as changing dashboard data. Review determines which it is: retain the accepted baseline when the change is a defect; approve a new baseline only after verifying an intentional change. Applitools describes this checkpoint-and-review model in its visual testing overview.

Build a repeatable Selenium screenshot test

The following Python example uses Selenium WebDriver to open a page, wait for a specific UI element, and save a screenshot. It produces an image for a comparison step; it does not itself implement baseline storage, pixel comparison, or review.

Install Selenium in the test environment with python -m pip install selenium. The code assumes a Chrome browser and a page with a visible main element; change the selector and URL to match the application. Selenium’s browser setup and driver requirements depend on the environment, so use the current official documentation for installation and browser-specific configuration.

Make the checkpoint reproducible

  • Use a known test account and deterministic fixture data instead of mutable production-like records.
  • Set a consistent viewport and browser configuration. A different viewport can change wrapping, responsive breakpoints, and the captured region.
  • Wait for the interface condition that matters, such as a visible component or a completed loading state. A fixed delay can be a fallback for a known animation or delayed asset, but it is less robust than waiting for a meaningful condition.
  • Capture the same route and interaction state each run: for example, after opening the same menu or dismissing the same onboarding prompt.

Compare the image and review differences

Save the first verified capture as the baseline. On later runs, submit the new screenshot and baseline to a visual comparison workflow, then inspect the reported difference before deciding whether to retain or replace the baseline. Selenium’s reviewed official pages establish browser automation and screenshot capture, but do not describe a built-in visual baseline comparison workflow; adding comparison and review requires a separate implementation or tool.

For a local workflow, your test runner can retain baseline files and invoke an image comparison library or image-diff command. The exact comparison algorithm, threshold, and report format depend on the library chosen; do not treat a raw pixel difference as a universal pass/fail standard. A small antialiasing or font-rendering variation may produce many changed pixels without indicating a meaningful UI defect.

Control noise without hiding defects

Dynamic data, rotating promotions, timestamps, animations, and asynchronous loading can create differences unrelated to layout. Applitools’ Selenium quickstart identifies changing dashboard data as a mismatch source and documents match levels; Percy materials describe scoping and region controls. Choose the remedy based on what the test is intended to detect, not merely on how to make a failing comparison pass. See the Applitools Selenium quickstart and the Percy Python Selenium repository.

  • Stabilize the source: use fixed fixtures, freeze time where appropriate, or disable rotating content in a test environment.
  • Narrow the comparison: capture or compare the component relevant to the test when unrelated page regions are inherently variable.
  • Mask only known volatility: exclude a timestamp or live-data region if it is outside the test’s purpose. Revisit masks when the page changes; overly broad exclusions can conceal real regressions.
  • Choose a suitable match mode: strict pixel matching is useful when rendering should be stable; perceptual or region-aware modes may be more appropriate when small rendering differences are acceptable. Confirm the selected tool’s current semantics in its documentation.
  • Handle motion deliberately: wait for animations to finish, disable them in test styling when appropriate, or capture a stable state. Avoid taking screenshots mid-transition.

Where visual comparison tools fit

Selenium supplies browser automation and screenshots; visual comparison tools can add baseline management, difference review, and controls for dynamic regions. The options below are examples documented by their vendors, not an independent performance or pricing ranking.

ScreenshotNeo Website screenshot API and MCP server. It removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed, with response headers identifying page verdict and billing status. Its API captures screenshots or PDFs, rather than serving as a Selenium visual-baseline review system. Whether screenshot capture, rather than browser-driven interaction and baseline approval, fits the test. See the API documentation.
Applitools Eyes Its vendor documentation provides a Java Selenium quickstart and describes checkpoints, baselines, review, and match levels. Current SDK support for your language and runner, browser coverage, review workflow, data handling, and current pricing. See the Java Selenium quickstart.
Percy Vendor materials describe Selenium snapshots and controls such as scope and regions; repository materials cover Python Selenium. Current SDK version, maintenance status, language and browser support, CI integration, baseline workflow, and pricing. See the Python Selenium repository and Percy’s Selenium guide.

For any hosted option, also assess where screenshots and application data are processed, how reviewers approve changes, and whether the tool covers the browsers and devices the product supports. The documentation cited here does not establish comparative prices or independent performance results.

If the task is to capture a clean website screenshot rather than drive your own Selenium interactions and maintain visual baselines, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API call. Use an API key from your account; the example saves the returned image as WebP. See ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Troubleshooting common visual-test failures

  • The screenshot is blank or incomplete: the page may still be loading, navigation may have failed, or the readiness selector may not represent the finished state. Wait for the relevant content and inspect the page or browser logs before capturing.
  • Images or fonts are missing: confirm that the browser can reach those resources in the test environment and that the test does not capture before they load. Wait on a relevant image or page-ready condition where necessary.
  • Every run reports differences: compare viewport, browser, data, time-dependent content, animation state, and interaction sequence. Stabilize the source before widening tolerances or masking regions.
  • A baseline update hides a failure: review the image difference and confirm the UI change is intentional before accepting it. Keep the previous accepted baseline when investigating a suspected defect.
  • CI behaves differently from a local run: inspect browser version, operating environment, fonts, viewport, and available resources. Align the environment where possible; otherwise choose comparison settings appropriate to the expected rendering variation.
  • The comparison misses a relevant change: check whether the compared region is too narrow or a mask excludes the affected area. Reduce exclusions until the test still covers the intended defect surface.

Keep visual checks maintainable in CI

Run screenshot checkpoints in the same automation workflow as the wider Selenium suite, but keep their state setup explicit. Name artifacts by route and state, preserve the expected baseline alongside review output, and make baseline approval a deliberate change rather than an automatic consequence of a failed run. Scope tests to the UI behavior they are meant to protect; a small number of stable, meaningful checkpoints are easier to diagnose than broad captures of uncontrolled pages.
