It first appeared as a Preview feature in VS Code 1.113, released March 25, 2026; current documentation calls the interface the Agent Customizations editor. Its contents depend on the selected agent harness, so choose the harness you intend to use before creating or editing files.
What the Chat Customizations editor does
The editor is a central interface for discovering, creating, and managing chat customization files. It separates customization types into sections and provides an embedded editor with syntax highlighting and validation. You can write content yourself or ask AI to draft an initial version; review any generated instructions or configuration for accuracy before saving or relying on it.
Microsoft’s VS Code 1.113 release note described it as “a centralized UI for creating and managing all your chat customizations in one place.” The release note introduced the feature as Preview, and current guidance continues to identify the editor as Preview. How to open the editor
- In the Chat view, select Configure Chat (the gear icon), then open the customizations editor.
- Alternatively, open the Command Palette and run Chat: Open Customizations.
- You can also choose a customization type from the Customizations panel in the Agents window.
Before creating a file, check that the intended agent harness is selected. The harness determines which customization types and locations are available, so the panel may differ when you change it.

Choose the customization type for the job

These are distinct tools rather than interchangeable file labels: use instructions for guidance that should shape work broadly, a skill for a relevant specialized workflow, a prompt file for a manually invoked request, and a custom agent when a recurring task needs its own instructions and tools. Availability and supported locations depend on the selected harness.
Choose a scope based on who should reuse it

Not every customization type supports every scope. Check the options the editor offers for the selected harness and file type instead of assuming that a customization can be placed at any scope.

Editing and evaluating customizations
The editor’s syntax highlighting and validation help you work with customization files, but they do not replace reviewing whether the content is correct or appropriate for your project. VS Code 1.118 release notes separately announced the Chat Customizations Evaluations extension. It analyzes prompt, agent, instruction, and skill files and provides diagnostics with improvement suggestions; it is a separate extension, not the editor itself.
