Which Visual Studio update added these Copilot features?
Microsoft released Visual Studio 2026 version 18.10.0 on September 8, 2026, as the September feature update. The later version 18.10.3, released September 29, is a servicing release; its notes list fixes including improved responsiveness when unloading a project and a Windows Forms Designer crash after component changes. Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2026 release notes identify both releases.
How do you use your own model in Visual Studio?
Bring Your Own Model (BYOM) connects Visual Studio’s new Agent (Preview) to a supported model provider or deployment. Microsoft describes the option as enabled by default in Visual Studio Community, Professional, and Enterprise. It is an early preview, and model support varies: not every model provides every Agent Mode capability. Mark Downie, a Microsoft principal product manager, summarized the positioning as: “The best LLM in Visual Studio is the one you choose.” That is Microsoft’s description of BYOM, not a comparative performance result.

- In the model picker, choose Add a model or Manage Models.
- Connect to a supported provider or deployment, then use the model with Agent Mode.
These are the providers and setup steps in Microsoft’s BYOM guidance. The listed providers do not establish that every model or deployment supports every agent capability.
What changes for existing BYOM users?
The September BYOM experience works with the new Agent (Preview), which uses a GitHub Copilot SDK-powered harness. The previous BYOM experience in earlier Ask and Agent modes is no longer supported. If you had added Ollama models before updating, Microsoft says you may need to add them again.

Can Copilot help fix NuGet vulnerability warnings?
Yes. When NuGet restore reports NU1901, NU1902, NU1903, or NU1904, the Error List can offer a sparkle action that opens Copilot agent mode to request a remediation through the NuGet MCP server. You must be signed in to GitHub Copilot and enable that server. Treat the suggested changes as proposals: review them before applying them to your project. Microsoft documents the workflow in its Visual Studio BYOM and Copilot guidance.
How does Copilot help explore pull requests?
The Git agent can explore a pull request attached as context from the Git Repository window. It can return navigable links to relevant comments and files in the IDE, helping you move from a question about the review to the related discussion or code.

Which chat and merge features are still Insiders previews?
Microsoft’s Insiders release notes describe a refreshed Copilot chat built on the Copilot SDK, with Ask and Agent modes. In that Insiders experience, enable it at Tools → Options → GitHub → Copilot → Copilot Chat, then restart Visual Studio. The notes also describe AI-assisted merge-conflict resolution through the Git Agent; review any proposed resolutions before completing the merge.
