The service supports screen, element, and full-page comparisons. A screenshot difference is a signal to investigate—not proof by itself that the page is broken.
Set up the WebdriverIO visual service
The documented WebdriverIO route is @wdio/visual-service, installed as a development dependency and registered in your WDIO configuration. The service provides methods to save or check screenshots of screens, elements, and full pages. Its check methods can create a baseline if one does not yet exist. See the WebdriverIO visual testing documentation for the current installation and configuration details.
- Install the package: run
npm install --save-dev @wdio/visual-servicein your project. - Register the service: add
@wdio/visual-serviceto theservicesarray in your WDIO configuration. Configure the baseline folder and relevant capture options there, following the documentation for your installed version. - Choose a stable page state: navigate to the page and wait for the application-specific content that matters to the screenshot.
- Choose a capture scope: use a screen or full-page capture for broad layout changes, or an element capture to focus on a component.
- Run the test and review the first capture: check methods can create the initial baseline. The writing-tests guide advises against combining save and compare methods on the first run.
- Review later differences before updating: decide whether the change is intentional. Update the baseline only after accepting a deliberate UI change; investigate unexplained differences as possible regressions.
The writing-tests guide covers Mocha, Jasmine, and CucumberJS. See WebdriverIO’s visual testing guide for test examples and method details.

Screen or viewport
A screen capture is useful when the viewport and visible composition are the test target. Keep the viewport consistent between baseline creation and subsequent runs; a different viewport can create legitimate layout changes that obscure the change you intended to catch.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Element
Element screenshots narrow comparison to a selected component, which is useful when unrelated page content changes frequently. Ensure the element is present and rendered before invoking the visual check.
Full page
Full-page capture can expose changes below the fold. The default desktop full-page method uses WebDriver BiDi without scrolling. For pages whose content appears only as the user scrolls, the service offers a user-based scrolling and stitching option. This can help with lazy-loaded or scroll-triggered content, though it does not replace waiting for the application to finish rendering.
Establish and maintain trustworthy baselines
A baseline is a reviewed reference image, not an unquestioned source of truth. On the initial run, inspect the created baseline to confirm it shows the intended state. On later runs, inspect the diff and determine whether the visual change reflects an intentional design update or an unexpected regression. If the change is intentional, update the accepted baseline; if it is unexplained, retain the prior reference while investigating.

Keep the capture environment as consistent as practical: browser, viewport, fonts, runtime, and application data can all influence rendered pixels. Wait for app-specific readiness rather than relying only on a generic page-load event. Where appropriate, normalize or hide dynamic regions, but avoid masking areas whose appearance is actually important to the test.
Visual comparisons answer whether rendered appearance changed. They do not replace functional assertions, which check behavior, or accessibility checks, which assess access and usability requirements.
Reduce noisy screenshot differences
- Hide scrollbars: use the service option when scrollbar rendering or presence is not the subject of the test.
- Disable blinking carets: the service can optionally suppress blinking input carets that otherwise vary between captures.
- Hide text for layout-only checks: when the goal is geometry rather than copy, the service has an option to hide text. Do not use it for tests where text appearance or content matters.
- Handle lazy content deliberately: switch full-page desktop capture to the user-based scroll-and-stitch method when the page relies on scrolling to load or reveal content.
- Wait for fonts and data: WebdriverIO may consider a page loaded before asynchronous font loading finishes. Wait for relevant fonts and application data before capturing.
These controls reduce known sources of variation; they cannot make every site deterministic. Prefer application-specific readiness conditions and stable test data over arbitrary delays where possible.

Account for the v10 comparison-engine change
The WebdriverIO visual testing documentation says @wdio/visual-service v10 changed its comparison engine from ResembleJS to Pixelmatch and describes the library’s use of a perceptual YIQ color model. The documentation warns that mismatch percentages can differ after upgrading from v9 or earlier. Review the resulting diffs and update baselines only where the rendered result is intended. It documents using --update-visual-baseline for individual failures, or recreating a baseline folder when intentionally starting over. Do not assume a mismatch percentage or threshold carries unchanged across major versions.
Run across browsers and devices
The current overview lists desktop Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge, as well as Appium-mediated Android and iOS emulators, simulators, and real devices, including native and hybrid app contexts. Actual coverage depends on the browsers, devices, runner, and Appium setup you have configured; the service documentation is not a promise that every environment is available in every CI configuration.
For stable comparisons, keep browser and device configuration aligned with the baseline. If a team deliberately tests multiple environments, treat each materially different rendering environment as its own comparison context rather than interpreting every cross-browser rendering difference as a new regression.

When to consider hosted visual testing
The local service keeps capture and comparison in the WebdriverIO workflow. Percy documents a WebdriverIO integration, while Applitools describes visual UI testing with checkpoints and baseline review. A hosted option may suit teams that need centralized visual review or a managed cross-browser/device process. Evaluate storage and review workflow, supported environments, parallel execution, handling of noisy regions, CI integration, data handling, collaboration, and current licensing. Available documentation does not establish a neutral pricing or feature-parity comparison between these options.
For screenshot capture outside a test runner, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for WebdriverIO visual assertions or baseline review. It is designed to return clean screenshots by accepting consent banners and removing known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed.

Troubleshooting visual-test failures
The first run creates a baseline unexpectedly
Check whether you are using a check method on a state with no existing reference. The service can create a baseline on the first check. Inspect that image before treating it as the accepted appearance, and avoid combining save and compare methods on the initial run.
A diff appears even though the UI seems unchanged
Check that browser, viewport, fonts, data, and application readiness match the baseline run. Look for asynchronous font loading, blinking carets, scrollbars, or dynamic content. Use the relevant service options or wait for stable app-specific conditions; do not automatically accept the new image.
Content below the fold is missing
If the page loads content on scroll, the default desktop full-page method may not trigger that behavior because it uses WebDriver BiDi without scrolling. Enable the user-based scrolling and stitching option and ensure the page has time to render newly revealed content.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMismatch percentages changed after an upgrade
If upgrading from v9 or earlier to v10, the documented engine change to Pixelmatch can affect mismatch percentages. Review the diffs and adjust accepted baselines intentionally rather than applying an old threshold as though it were version-independent.
Mobile or native capture is unavailable
Confirm that the runner is configured with the required Appium-mediated emulator, simulator, or real device and the correct app context. Listed support depends on the infrastructure and Appium setup; it is not enabled by the visual-service package alone.
A hosted service comparison is hard to make
Compare the workflows that matter to your team—baseline storage and review, target environments, CI integration, data handling, and collaboration—and verify current prices and licensing directly with the provider. A neutral pricing or feature-parity conclusion is not established here.
