TestCafe can capture screenshots during end-to-end tests, but its documented screenshot features do not perform visual regression comparisons or manage approved baselines. Use TestCafe’s screenshot actions to save images; add a separate comparison workflow—such as Percy’s documented TestCafe client library—if you need to detect and review visual changes.
What TestCafe can—and cannot—do natively
TestCafe provides two screenshot actions: t.takeScreenshot() captures the current browser window, and t.takeElementScreenshot() captures an element. Runner settings or configuration let you control where screenshots are stored and whether they are taken when tests fail.
Those capabilities create image artifacts; they are not visual regression testing by themselves. The cited TestCafe documentation describes capture and artifact configuration, not comparison with a baseline, difference reporting, or baseline approval. To identify unexpected visual changes, add an image-comparison process or an integration that provides one.
- Capture: save a rendering produced by a test.
- Comparison: compare a new rendering with a known baseline and review the differences.
- Failure evidence: save a screenshot when a test fails. This helps diagnose a failure but does not establish that the page differs from a visual baseline.

import { Selector } from 'testcafe';
fixture`Account page`
.page`https://example.com/account`;
test('capture the account page', async t => {
await t.takeScreenshot();
});
Replace the example URL with an application page your test can access. The screenshot action records the current window; configure screenshot storage through the runner or configuration settings described below.
Capture one element
Use t.takeElementScreenshot() when the comparison should focus on a component rather than the full window. Pass a TestCafe selector for the target:
import { Selector } from 'testcafe';
fixture`Account page`
.page`https://example.com/account`;
test('capture the account summary', async t => {
const summary = Selector('[data-testid="account-summary"]');
await t.takeElementScreenshot(summary);
});
Choose a selector that reliably identifies the intended element in your application. A selector that matches no element, or matches a different element after a page change, will undermine the usefulness of the artifact.
Configure screenshot paths and failure capture
TestCafe’s runner screenshot options include path, takeOnFails, pathPattern, pathPatternOnFails, fullPage, and thumbnails. The documented default for fullPage is false. Path patterns can distinguish artifacts using run date or time, test, browser, operating system, and screenshot index.

For example, configure a runner to save screenshots under a directory and capture them on failures:
import { Selector } from 'testcafe';
fixture`Account page`
.page`https://example.com/account`;
test('account page renders', async t => {
await t.takeScreenshot();
});
const runner = testCafe.createRunner();
await runner
.src('tests/account.js')
.browsers('chrome')
.screenshots({
path: 'artifacts/screenshots',
takeOnFails: true,
fullPage: true
})
.run();
This illustrates the documented runner settings; adapt the runner setup to how your project creates and runs TestCafe. Use pathPattern and pathPatternOnFails when you need filenames organized by run or test attributes rather than relying on a single generic name. Set thumbnails if thumbnail artifacts are useful to your workflow.
Enabling takeOnFails saves diagnostic evidence when a test fails. It does not compare the image to a baseline, decide whether a visual change is acceptable, or approve a new baseline.
Make visual comparisons reproducible
A meaningful image comparison depends on capturing the same page under comparable conditions. TestCafe’s screenshot controls organize capture, but the cited documentation does not claim to remove rendering noise or stabilize application state automatically. Treat reproducibility as part of the test design.

- Artifact identity: use screenshot paths or patterns that make it possible to associate an image with its test and execution context.
Use Percy for a managed comparison workflow
Percy’s public TestCafe client repository documents a TestCafe integration for visual regression testing. Its example uses percySnapshot; snapshots are uploaded when tests run under percy exec with the project’s PERCY_TOKEN. The repository’s example says snapshots are disabled when Percy is not running. Check the repository for current package and command requirements before adopting it, since these can change.
import { Selector } from 'testcafe';
import percySnapshot from '@percy/testcafe';
fixture`Account page`
.page`https://example.com/account`;
test('snapshot the account page', async t => {
await percySnapshot(t, 'Account page');
});
Run the test through Percy’s CLI with the project token configured, following the current integration instructions in the Percy TestCafe client repository. A snapshot call alone is not evidence that an upload or comparison occurred: the repository describes uploads in the context of percy exec and PERCY_TOKEN.
Applitools describes a service that compares builds with approved baselines and supports browser and device visual testing. The cited overview does not establish a TestCafe-specific connector, so verify current integration documentation before assuming it fits a TestCafe project.
Account for TestCafe’s remote-browser limitation
TestCafe’s screenshot-and-video guide states: “TestCafe cannot take screenshots and videos of remote browsers.” If screenshot artifacts are essential, plan the capture around a supported local browser context or investigate an alternative capture route for your required environment. Do not assume the screenshot actions will work in a remote-browser run.

Troubleshoot common screenshot workflow problems
No screenshot appears when a test fails
Check that screenshot failure capture is enabled with takeOnFails in the runner settings or corresponding configuration. Also verify the configured output directory and that the test is running with the settings you edited.
The screenshot is not full page
The documented fullPage default is false. Set it to true in the screenshot settings when you need a full-page capture, and confirm that the resulting artifact matches the desired scope.
Images are difficult to identify or overwrite each other
Set a deliberate screenshot path and use pathPattern or pathPatternOnFails to distinguish run, test, browser, operating system, or screenshot index. This makes artifacts easier to associate with the conditions that produced them.
There is an image but no regression result
Capture only creates an artifact. Add a baseline comparison step or use an integration such as Percy’s documented TestCafe client workflow; ensure the run is executed with the integration’s required command and token.

Remote browser capture is unavailable
The TestCafe guide excludes screenshots and videos of remote browsers. Run the screenshot portion in a supported local browser context, or assess a separate capture approach that suits the environment.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can capture a page without wiring screenshot capture into a TestCafe browser run. This is an alternative for obtaining website screenshots, not a replacement for a TestCafe baseline-comparison workflow.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, cURL can save a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/account -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Choosing the right approach
Use TestCafe’s native screenshot actions when you need test-linked image artifacts or failure diagnostics. Add a comparison and baseline-review layer when the goal is to catch visual regressions. Percy has a documented TestCafe client integration; for any managed service, verify its current integration requirements and coverage against your browsers, viewports, and page states.
