The reliable pattern is to control the page data and rendering conditions first, then capture a focused component or page and inspect the diff. Cypress’s documented approach uses screenshot-and-diff plugins; Cypress itself provides cy.screenshot() to capture the application under test.
How Cypress visual regression testing works
A visual test has three parts: a reproducible state, a screenshot or rendered snapshot, and a comparison against an accepted baseline. When the current image differs, the test produces a diff for review. The baseline is not an assertion that the interface can never change; it is the reference against which intended and unintended changes are distinguished.
Cypress’s open-source plugin pattern typically adds a custom command that captures a screenshot and compares it pixel by pixel with a baseline kept alongside the code. Cypress’s cy.screenshot() captures the application under test and can optionally include the Cypress Command Log. A screenshot alone is not a visual regression test: a comparison tool or workflow must also manage baselines and report differences. Build a stable visual test
The following example shows the Cypress setup pattern: seed a predictable response, wait for it, and capture a meaningful state. The actual snapshot command depends on the comparison tool you select; replace the marked call with that tool’s documented Cypress command. Cypress’s guide describes this workflow, but it does not prescribe one universal plugin command.

});Here cypress/fixtures/plans.json should contain stable test data, and the selector should identify an element that belongs to the behavior under test. The raw .screenshot() call saves an image; it does not itself compare the image to a baseline.
Control inputs and timing
- Use
cy.intercept()with a fixture for responses that would otherwise change between runs. - Wait for the aliased request, then assert that the target content is visible before capture. A fixed sleep may hide a race without ensuring the page is ready.
- Stabilize dates, user-specific data, randomized content, and feature flags where they affect pixels.
- Keep browser, viewport, fonts, and operating-system conditions consistent in CI. Rendering differences can look like product regressions even when application code is unchanged.
Mask the source of noise
Ads, animated media, timestamps, and third-party widgets can change independently of your application. Cypress recommends masking small dynamic regions, rather than increasing a page-wide difference threshold. Broad thresholds can conceal a real layout or styling regression elsewhere on the page. If a region is not important to the question the test answers, exclude or stabilize that region specifically.
Choose what to snapshot
Component or element checkpoints
Component Testing is a strong fit for focused visual checks: the component renders in a controlled environment, its data can be fixed, and a diff points toward a smaller area of ownership. Element-level captures are also useful when a specific widget has a clear owner. Keep each checkpoint tied to a meaningful UI state rather than creating snapshots indiscriminately.

Full-page checkpoints
Full-page screenshots help catch page-level layout regressions and are useful for important journeys. They are also more exposed to unrelated content, dynamic regions, and rendering noise. Keep them for states where the overall page composition matters, and use smaller captures for localized components.

Pick a comparison workflow
Choose based on where baselines should live, how many browser and viewport combinations matter, and how reviewers should approve changes. Where Cypress stores screenshots
Cypress’s configuration reference lists cypress/screenshots as the default screenshotsFolder for images created by cy.screenshot() or after failed cypress run tests. A comparison plugin may have its own baseline and artifact locations, so distinguish Cypress’s screenshot output from the diff tool’s stored references. See the Cypress configuration reference.
Keep snapshots useful in CI
- Control the test data. Stub changing API responses with fixtures and wait for the aliased request before capture.
- Stabilize rendering. Use the same browser, viewport, fonts, and operating-system conditions in CI as in the environment that produced the baseline.
- Reduce irrelevant pixels. Freeze or mask animations, ads, timestamps, and third-party widgets that are outside the test’s purpose.
- Make ownership clear. Prefer a component or element checkpoint with a responsible team; retain full-page images for journeys where page-wide layout matters.
- Review intentional changes. Treat a baseline update as a review decision, not routine cleanup. Approving incidental differences automatically trains the process to ignore real regressions.
- Retain useful artifacts. Store and review baseline, current, and diff images according to the local or hosted workflow your team selected.
Troubleshooting flaky visual snapshots
The same test produces different diffs on repeated runs
Check for changing API data, timestamps, randomized values, animation, third-party content, or inconsistent fonts and rendering environments. Stub changing responses, explicitly wait for required requests, and mask only small regions whose pixels are intentionally variable.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Confirm the page and target element are visible before capture, and wait for the request that supplies the content. If the target relies on asynchronous rendering beyond that request, assert the rendered state rather than assuming navigation completion means the UI is ready.

The diff is noisy across the whole page
Compare the browser, viewport, fonts, and operating system used for the baseline and current run. Then isolate dynamic third-party regions. Avoid a global threshold increase as a substitute for identifying the source of variation.
A baseline changed, but the test is correct
Review the current image and diff, decide whether the UI change is intentional, and approve or update the baseline using the chosen tool’s workflow. Keep the reason visible in the code review so future reviewers can distinguish an accepted design change from accidental drift.
A screenshot exists but no regression is reported
cy.screenshot() captures an image; it does not do pixel comparison or baseline approval. Confirm that the chosen plugin or service’s Cypress command is installed and invoked, and that the current image is submitted to its comparison workflow.

Does Cypress include visual regression comparison by itself?
No. Cypress can capture screenshots with cy.screenshot(); comparing them to baselines requires a plugin or a visual testing service.
