VirtualBox 7.2 adds support for Windows 11/Arm virtual machines on compatible Arm64 hosts and enables video decoding acceleration on Linux hosts when 3D is enabled. The two changes have different limits: Arm VMs require Arm hardware, Windows 11/Arm host support is experimental, and Oracle does not specify codecs or performance gains for Linux video decoding.
What VirtualBox 7.2 changes
Oracle released VirtualBox 7.2.0 on August 14, 2025. Its headline features include Windows 11/Arm guest support on supported Arm64 hosts, experimental VirtualBox host support for Windows 11/Arm, and video decoding acceleration on Linux hosts with 3D enabled. Oracle’s downloads page listed version 7.2.20 as the current 7.2 base package on October 4, 2026; check the Oracle downloads page for the current package, since maintenance versions change.
Can VirtualBox 7.2 run Windows 11/Arm?
Yes, as a guest on a supported Arm64 host. Oracle names macOS and Windows 11 on Arm64 as host platforms for Arm VMs. Windows 11/Arm can run as a guest using a virtual Arm processor, with Guest Additions available. Oracle’s feature documentation describes the architecture and platform boundaries.
- Arm64 host: Arm VMs can run on supported macOS or Windows 11 hosts.
- x86_64 host: Arm VMs will not run.
- Arm64 host with an x86_64 guest: x86_64 VMs will not run.
This is an architecture constraint, not a setting that can be changed in the VM configuration. Choose a host and guest with compatible processor architectures before creating or migrating a VM.

Does VirtualBox 7.2 support Windows on Arm hosts?
Yes, experimentally. Oracle identifies Windows 11/Arm host support as experimental and says it is not covered by Oracle Premier Support. On such an Arm64 host, Oracle lists Oracle Linux for Arm64 and Windows 11 for Arm64 as guest choices. The same architecture restriction applies: x86_64 VMs do not run on Arm64 hosts.
What Linux video acceleration means
Oracle says video decoding acceleration is available on Linux hosts when 3D is enabled. This describes a Linux-host feature; it does not establish a specific codec list, graphics-card requirement, benchmark, or guaranteed playback improvement. Oracle’s Guest Additions guide separately describes features such as additional video modes, accelerated video performance, automatic display resizing, shared folders, clipboard sharing, and drag and drop. Those Guest Additions capabilities should not be confused with the separately announced Linux-host video decoding acceleration.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
VirtualBox 7.2 also describes an experimental 3D acceleration path on macOS Arm hosts. Intel-based macOS hosts no longer support 3D acceleration in this release. Neither point changes the narrower Linux video-decoding qualification.
What else changed for Arm VMs
Alongside Windows/Arm Guest Additions support, the release notes describe a WDDM graphics driver with 2D and 3D modes and shared folders. NVMe storage controller emulation also became part of the open-source base package. These changes broaden VM functionality, but do not remove the host/guest architecture restrictions.

Before upgrading an Arm VM from VirtualBox 7.1
Resolve saved states before upgrading if you need to preserve the VM’s current state. Oracle warns that Arm VM saved states created in 7.1 are incompatible with 7.2, and that 7.1 snapshots containing associated saved states will not work in 7.2.
- Open the Arm VM in VirtualBox 7.1.
- Shut it down in the required state before upgrading, following Oracle’s preservation guidance.
- Upgrade VirtualBox, then start the VM normally rather than attempting to resume an incompatible saved state.
The compatibility warning applies to Arm VMs and their saved states or snapshots; it is not a general statement that every VirtualBox 7.1 VM is incompatible with 7.2.

How to decide whether these features fit
- For Windows 11/Arm guest use: confirm the host is Arm64 and runs a supported operating system.
- For a Windows 11/Arm host: account for experimental status and the Oracle Premier Support exclusion.
- For Linux-host video decoding: enable 3D, but do not assume an undocumented codec, GPU, or measurable speedup.
- For an upgrade: deal with Arm VM saved states and snapshot dependencies before moving from 7.1.
Oracle’s 7.2.0 change log and release announcement provide the release details; the announcement states that “video decoding acceleration is now available when 3D is enabled on Linux hosts.”
