There is no universally fastest or best desktop virtual machine. Start with your host computer’s operating system and processor architecture, then check whether the guest OS and the applications or devices you need are supported. After that, weigh integration, portability, management features, licensing, and performance on your actual workload.
This comparison covers VMware Workstation and Fusion, Oracle VirtualBox, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Parallels Desktop. It does not rank cloud VM services or bare-metal server hypervisors, which are different categories. Product details below reflect official documentation reviewed on October 7, 2026; support and licensing can change.
Which virtual machine is best for your computer?
Choose by host platform first. A product that is a good fit on Windows may not support the same guest operating systems or processor architectures on a Mac. On Apple silicon in particular, check that the guest and the application you need are compatible with an Arm-based setup; do not assume every x86 Windows feature or app will work as it does on an Intel PC.

What is the fastest VM software?
The available official product documentation does not establish a controlled, cross-platform speed winner. A result for one task—such as CPU computation—would not necessarily predict graphics performance, storage throughput, startup time, or how responsive a desktop feels.
Performance depends on the host CPU and memory, storage, guest OS, VM resource allocation, graphics needs, and other software using the machine. Architecture matters too: a guest running natively on the host’s processor architecture is a different comparison from one that depends on translation or emulation. Oracle also warns that running VMs from competing hypervisors at the same time on one host can cause problems, including a host crash.
How to compare performance fairly
For a meaningful comparison, use the same host hardware, operating-system build, guest image, VM settings, workload, graphics configuration, and measurement method. State what the test measures—CPU, storage, graphics, startup, or interactive responsiveness—and report the VM’s resource allocation. Do not treat vendor setup-time or application-count claims as independent performance benchmarks.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
If you are choosing for personal use, test the task that matters to you on your own computer where possible. Keep the host, guest, resource allocation, and workload consistent when comparing options. No general speed figure can substitute for an application-specific compatibility check.
Which VM should you use on Windows or Linux?
Choose VMware Workstation for a configurable desktop VM
Workstation targets Windows and Linux hosts and offers snapshots and advanced configuration features. VMware’s 26H1 announcement, published May 14, 2026, describes Workstation for Windows as a 64-bit application and lists support for guest releases including Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, Fedora 43 and 44, SUSE Linux Enterprise 16, openSUSE 16.0, and FreeBSD 15.0. Check the current release notes for your exact host and guest before installing; a listed guest release does not establish that every guest feature or workload is supported.
VMware says the full Pro feature set—including advanced networking, snapshots, encryption, virtual TPM, and Secure Boot—is available without a purchased license key and is free for all use cases. Verify the current licensing and download terms when you install, since product terms can change.

Choose VirtualBox for hosted portability and lab work
VirtualBox runs on top of an existing operating system. Oracle documents VM portability across supported host systems, OVF import and export, and Guest Additions that can provide resolution adjustment, shared folders, shared clipboard, drag and drop, and accelerated 3D graphics. Oracle’s documented support and performance optimizations vary by host and guest; these features should not be read as a guarantee of near-native performance for every OS.

Oracle says experimental features do not qualify for Oracle support. Check the table for the precise host-and-guest pairing you intend to use, especially on Arm systems.
Choose Hyper-V for Windows-native development and IT management
Hyper-V is included in Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education. Microsoft documents capabilities including snapshots, templates, PowerShell automation, nested virtualization, clustering, Shielded VMs, and Azure or hybrid scenarios. That broader management story can matter more to a Windows-centric team than desktop integration or VM portability.

Hyper-V availability depends on the Windows edition and hardware requirements. Windows Server 2025 offers Hyper-V as a server role across its editions, but Windows Server VM rights depend on the edition and applicable licensing. Check your own entitlement rather than assuming that having the role means a particular number of guest OS licenses is included.
Which VM should you use on a Mac?
Choose Parallels for an integrated Mac and Windows workflow
Parallels describes running Arm versions of Windows 11 on Apple silicon Macs, with Coherence mode and integration features such as shared folders, clipboard, drag and drop, camera access, and graphics acceleration. This can suit someone who wants supported Windows apps to sit alongside Mac apps in a familiar desktop workflow. Application and peripheral compatibility still depends on the specific software, device, guest version, and processor architecture.

Choose VMware Fusion when its host and guest support fit
Fusion targets Intel and Apple silicon Macs and includes advanced VM features such as snapshots, networking, encryption, virtual TPM, and Secure Boot under VMware’s stated Pro licensing terms. On Apple silicon, VMware notes that not all x86 guest features are available. Confirm the guest architecture and the particular feature you need rather than assuming an Intel Mac setup will translate directly to Apple silicon.
Check architecture and application compatibility before installing
On Apple silicon, the key question is not merely whether a VM can start Windows or Linux. Check that the guest architecture, VM product, and required application or device all work together. Windows-on-Arm support does not establish that every Windows application, driver, or peripheral is compatible. If you depend on a specific app, graphics feature, security control, or accessory, verify that exact combination with the software and device vendors.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which features matter beyond speed?
Match the VM’s capabilities to what you need to do. A convenient desktop integration feature is not a substitute for exportability or IT controls, and a broad management feature set may be unnecessary for a single test VM.

- Snapshots and rollback: Useful before risky changes or experiments. Microsoft describes snapshots as a safety net for experimenting and rolling back VM changes.
- Portability: If you expect to move VM images between machines or products, check supported formats and import/export behavior. Oracle documents OVF import and export and portability across supported hosts.
- Integration: Shared folders, clipboard, drag and drop, camera access, and display adjustment can reduce friction between host and guest, but availability varies by VM product and guest.
- Graphics and peripherals: Verify the needed graphics APIs, acceleration, drivers, and devices for your workload; a general claim of graphics acceleration does not guarantee support for a particular app.
- Automation and administration: PowerShell provisioning, templates, clustering, and hybrid management may matter to Windows IT teams, while a solo user may prioritize ease of setup.
- Licensing and support: Distinguish the VM software license from the guest operating system’s license. Windows Server guest rights, for example, depend on the applicable server edition and licensing.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the host OS and processor. Note whether the computer runs Windows, Linux, Intel macOS, or Apple silicon macOS.
- Name the guest and its architecture. Check whether the guest OS is supported on that specific host and whether it runs natively or depends on translation or emulation.
- Check the workload. Verify the exact application, graphics feature, security requirement, or peripheral you need inside the VM.
- Choose the management features. Decide whether you need snapshots, cloning, import/export, networking controls, automation, or hybrid administration.
- Confirm licensing and support. Review the current VM product terms, guest OS license, edition requirements, and whether experimental features are covered by support.
- Test your workload. Allocate realistic CPU, memory, and storage, then assess the actual task rather than relying on a universal “fastest VM” claim.
