Neither Virgin Media Play nor RTÉ Player carries every Irish sports event. Rights are assigned fixture by fixture, so check the event listing and your viewing device before relying on either service. Both offer free ways to stream broadcaster content, but their supported platforms and stated access terms differ.

How sports coverage works
Sports streaming rights do not necessarily follow a broadcaster’s channel lineup. The clearest example in the available official announcements is the 2026 Six Nations: RTÉ and Virgin Media Television shared free-to-air coverage, with individual matches assigned across their channels and players. Some fixtures were listed on Virgin Media One and Virgin Media Play; others were on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player, and some were listed on RTÉ Player alone. A second dated example: RTÉ announced that the Katie Taylor–Flora Pili fight on 5 September 2026 would be available free-to-air for Irish audiences on RTÉ2, RTÉ Player and 2FM. Check the exact fixture, not just the service name
- Find the event’s official listing and confirm which broadcaster or player has the rights to that fixture.
- Check whether the listing promises a live stream, catch-up, or both. A TV broadcast does not by itself establish online availability.
- Confirm territory conditions, especially if you are outside the Republic of Ireland.
- Check that the app or browser works on the device you intend to use.
- For Virgin Media Play, allow for required registration and advertising; check the programme’s catch-up window if you plan to watch later.
Which devices can you use?
Virgin Media Play
Virgin Media lists desktop and laptop computers, Android and iOS devices, Virgin Media or Sky platforms, and NOW TV. Its FAQ describes platform categories rather than a current, exhaustive model-by-model Smart TV list. A separate TV-device connection page explains how to sign in and enter the code shown on a TV device, but does not identify which models are compatible. RTÉ Player
RTÉ identifies mobile apps for iOS and Android, web clients, set-top boxes and Smart TV apps. For desktop web access, it lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge among supported browsers. The accessibility statement does not give a complete current list of compatible television or set-top-box models. If you are choosing a television or streaming device, verify that the exact model’s current app catalogue includes the service you need. The platform-category lists above do not establish that a particular model supports both players.

What access terms should you expect?
Virgin Media Play is described by Virgin Media Television as a free, ad-supported online service for live and on-demand programming from Virgin Media One, Two, Three and Four. An account is required. The FAQ says over 90% of broadcast programming is offered for catch-up, subject to rights; most programmes remain available for 30 days, while some rights-restricted titles are limited to 7 days. It also says most programmes are available only in the Republic of Ireland, and that some cannot be watched online because of rights restrictions. The RTÉ sources cited here establish device categories and specific sports-event announcements, but do not establish current general account, advertising or catch-up terms for RTÉ Player. Check RTÉ’s listing for the programme or event you want rather than assuming those terms match Virgin Media Play.

Which one should you use?
- For a particular match or fight: use whichever player has the rights to that event and confirms online access in your location.
- For Virgin Media channel programming: Virgin Media Play is the relevant player, subject to registration, ads, rights and the stated territory limits.
- For RTÉ programming: RTÉ Player supports a range of mobile, web, set-top-box and Smart TV platform categories; check the specific programme and device.
- For TV viewing: confirm app availability for your precise television or box model. Broad platform support is not a model compatibility guarantee.
RTÉ reported that its Player delivered 155 million streams in 2025, up 9% year on year, in a 2026 RTÉ News report. RTÉ also described an ambition to offer more than 7,000 hours of Player content. The stream figure is not a count of unique viewers or a measure of service quality, and the hours figure is an ambition rather than a verified catalogue count.
