Virgin Media O2 launched O2 Satellite in the UK on 26 February 2026, using Starlink Direct to Cell satellites and O2’s licensed mobile spectrum to provide messaging and selected app data when a customer cannot connect to ordinary mobile coverage. At launch, the service costs £3 per month as an O2 Pay Monthly Bolt On and supports four named Samsung Galaxy S25-series phones.
What is O2 Satellite?
O2 Satellite is a satellite fallback for compatible O2 phones, not a replacement for conventional mobile service or a general-purpose satellite broadband connection. When terrestrial coverage is unavailable, a supported phone is designed to connect automatically to Starlink Direct to Cell satellites using O2’s spectrum. Virgin Media O2 announced the launch on 26 February 2026.
Virgin Media O2 says the launch takes UK landmass coverage from 89% to 95%, adding an area roughly two-thirds the size of Wales. The company positions the extra coverage for rural and remote locations, including coastal areas, and as a backup during a local mobile-network outage. It is intended for places where a satellite can reach the phone; it does not establish that service will work in every indoor, obstructed or otherwise difficult location.
Is it Europe’s first satellite phone service?
Virgin Media O2 describes O2 Satellite as Europe’s first space-based mobile data service and says the UK is the first European country to launch Direct to Cell mobile data. Treat “first” as the operator’s claim, not as a statement that satellite phones or other kinds of satellite connectivity did not exist in Europe. The launch announcement identifies the service as a mobile-data and messaging offering delivered through compatible mobile phones.

Which phones work with O2 Satellite?
Virgin Media O2 named these Samsung models as compatible at launch:
- Samsung Galaxy S25
- Samsung Galaxy S25+
- Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra
- Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge
Having an O2 SIM or an LTE-capable phone alone does not establish compatibility. The operator says supported devices will expand, but the launch announcement does not name additional models. Check O2’s current device and plan information before relying on a different handset.

What can you do over satellite?
At launch, O2 Satellite supports text messaging and data in selected applications. Virgin Media O2 lists WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Google Maps, Google Messages, Google Find Hub, Google Personal Safety, AccuWeather, AllTrails, BBC Weather, Samsung Weather, X and Yahoo Mail. Supported-app data is not equivalent to unrestricted mobile internet: the launch list does not mean every app or every feature within an app is available by satellite.

Although Starlink representatives described access to data, voice and video through apps, Virgin Media O2’s specific launch description centers on messaging and selected app data. It does not promise conventional cellular voice calls or unrestricted video streaming through O2 Satellite.

How much does O2 Satellite cost?
The launch price is £3 per month as an O2 Pay Monthly Bolt On. Virgin Media O2 said O2 Satellite would soon be included at no extra cost for Ultimate Plan customers; that was a future inclusion in the launch announcement, so check the current plan terms for its availability and eligibility.

The service combines Starlink Direct to Cell satellites with spectrum licensed to O2, rather than asking a phone to connect to a separate satellite-phone network. In an Ofcom filing dated 14 November 2025, Virgin Media O2 described the planned Direct to Device service under an Ofcom licence variation and identified uplink frequencies of 1710.1–1715.9 MHz and downlink frequencies of 1805.1–1810.9 MHz. The filing is available from Virgin Media O2’s Ofcom application.

Virgin Media O2’s October 2025 partnership announcement described Starlink Direct to Cell as a constellation of more than 650 low-Earth-orbit satellites and said the system works with existing LTE phones when the sky is visible. That is the companies’ description of the technology, not a guarantee that every LTE phone is supported. The partnership announcement had set a goal of exceeding 95% UK landmass coverage within 12 months of launch, while describing messaging and data as the initial focus.
