Vietnam’s gross domestic product grew an estimated 9.95% year over year in the third quarter of 2026, according to figures from the National Statistics Office reported on October 3. That is a comparison with Q3 2025—not growth from Q2 to Q3. For January through September, the reported year-on-year growth rate was 9.01%.

What Vietnam’s 9.95% Q3 growth figure means

The National Statistics Office estimate covers July through September 2026 and compares economic output with the same quarter a year earlier. VietnamPlus reported that NSO Director Nguyen Thi Huong presented the estimate at an October 3 press conference; VietnamPlus and Vietnam Government News both reported the figure.

It is not a quarter-on-quarter growth rate, which would compare Q3 with Q2. The reports do not provide detailed methodology, seasonal-adjustment information, or a revision schedule, so those details should not be inferred from the headline rate.

How Q3 compares with earlier 2026 growth

The reported year-on-year pace rose in each quarter. The nine-month figure is cumulative, covering January through September, rather than a fourth quarterly reading.

Period GDP growth, year over year Source
Q1 2026 8.15% National Statistics Office figures reported by VietnamPlus and Vietnam Government News, 2026
Q2 2026 8.81% National Statistics Office figures reported by VietnamPlus and Vietnam Government News, 2026
Q3 2026 9.95% National Statistics Office estimate reported by VietnamPlus and Vietnam Government News, 2026
January–September 2026 9.01% National Statistics Office estimate reported by VietnamPlus and Vietnam Government News, 2026

Which sectors contributed to nine-month growth?

Vietnam Government News reported these January–September sector growth rates and shares of total value-added growth. The growth rate measures how quickly a sector expanded; the contribution share describes its portion of overall value-added growth, so the two columns are not interchangeable.

Sector Growth rate, year over year Contribution to total value-added growth
Agriculture, forestry and fisheries 4.02% 5.35%
Industry and construction 11.21% 49.62%
Services 8.96% according to Vietnam Government News; VietnamPlus reported 8.69% 45.03%

On the contribution measure, industry and construction accounted for the largest share. The two outlets agree on the other listed sector rates and on all three contribution shares, but differ on services growth; the available reports do not resolve that discrepancy. Figures are from Vietnam Government News and VietnamPlus, 2026.

What other Q3 indicators show

VietnamPlus reported Q3 year-on-year growth of 8.96% in final consumption, 21.39% in gross capital formation, 23.27% in exports of goods and services, and 28.75% in imports. These expenditure-side measures describe different components of economic activity; they should not be read as sector growth rates.

Vietnam Government News also reported that industrial production (IIP) grew 12.3% year over year over the first nine months of 2026. It put goods trade turnover at US$888.02 billion, up 30.4%, with imports exceeding exports and a goods trade deficit of US$19.42 billion. These are contextual indicators, not proof of what caused GDP growth. Sources: VietnamPlus and Vietnam Government News, 2026.

Why officials say Q4 growth must exceed 12.5%

Vietnam’s government has a double-digit growth goal for 2026. At an October 3 Cabinet meeting with localities, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung said: “To achieve this year’s double-digit growth goal, GDP growth in the fourth quarter must exceed 12.5 percent.” Vietnam Government News reported the statement.

The above-12.5% figure is the Q4 pace officials say is required to meet that annual goal. It is a target requirement, not a forecast that Q4 growth will reach that level.
