Video transcoding decodes an encoded audio or video stream and encodes it again, usually to change its format, size, bitrate, or other properties. You need it when the source will not work for the destination, when you must process it, or when you need multiple quality versions for adaptive streaming. If the source already fits and needs no changes, streamcopy avoids the extra processing and potential quality loss.
What is video transcoding?
Transcoding is a decode-and-re-encode process. Software decodes an existing media stream, may alter it, then encodes a new stream. The result can use a different codec or resolution, a changed bitrate, processed audio, or other adjustments.
FFmpeg’s documentation identifies compatibility and media processing as common reasons to transcode. For example, a destination might not support the source codec, or a workflow may require resizing, deinterlacing, or audio processing. FFmpeg cautions that encoding takes computing resources and is usually lossy, and recommends streamcopy when conversion is unnecessary. Read FFmpeg’s streamcopy and transcoding documentation.
Transcoding, encoding, and streamcopy: what is the difference?
| Term | What happens | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding | Raw audio or video is compressed into an encoded format. | When creating an encoded media stream, such as from a camera or editing timeline. |
| Transcoding | An existing encoded stream is decoded and encoded again, possibly with changes. | When the destination needs a different codec or media properties, or when processing or multiple renditions are needed. |
| Streamcopy | Encoded packets are copied without decoding and re-encoding. | When the existing streams already meet the destination requirements and no transformation is needed. |
Streamcopy is not a quality-enhancement technique; it preserves the encoded stream rather than creating a newly encoded version. It can save processing time and avoid the additional quality loss associated with another lossy encode, but it cannot fix an incompatible codec or change the picture size.

When do I need to transcode a video for streaming?
- Codec compatibility: Transcode if the platform, player, or delivery workflow cannot decode the source codec.
- Changed media properties: Transcode to resize, alter bitrate or frame rate, deinterlace, or otherwise meet a specified output requirement.
- Processing: Transcode when you need filters, overlays, or audio processing that changes the media.
- Adaptive quality: Transcode to create several renditions at different resolutions or bitrates so a streaming player can offer or select a version suited to a viewer’s device and connection.
- No change required: Use streamcopy if the encoded streams already fit the target workflow and do not need filtering or conversion.
OBS describes streaming transcoding as turning a source feed into multiple feeds, often with different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates. That gives viewers quality choices suited to their device and connection. Its explanation was published on June 9, 2021; platform eligibility and access rules can change, so check the streaming platform’s current documentation rather than relying on that article for present-day entitlements. OBS Project: Transcodes / Transcoding.
Do I need transcoding for live streaming?
Not automatically. A live workflow can send a stream onward without converting it if the incoming codec and settings are accepted by the destination and no processing or alternate renditions are required. Transcoding becomes relevant when the service must make compatible output, apply processing, or produce a range of quality levels.

For example, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview describes taking live SRT or RTMP input through an input endpoint and channel, converting it to HLS or DASH output, and saving the result to Cloud Storage. This is one documented managed workflow, not a requirement for every live stream. Google Cloud Live Stream API overview.
Whether viewers experience smooth playback depends on more than transcoding: encoding settings, packaging, player behavior, available bandwidth, and the rest of the delivery workflow also matter. Conversion by itself does not guarantee a particular viewing quality.

How transcoding relates to HLS, DASH, and packaging
Transcoding changes encoded media; packaging organizes media and associated information into a format that a streaming player and delivery workflow can use. They are related stages, but they are not synonyms. A workflow may create several encoded renditions and package them for delivery, for example as HLS or DASH.
MPEG describes DASH as a standard for live and on-demand delivery over existing internet infrastructure. MPEG-DASH overview. Google Cloud’s Transcoder API lists MP4, HLS, and DASH among its output formats, illustrating that a processing workflow can produce either files or streaming outputs. Local software or a managed cloud workflow?
The right approach depends on the job, not on a universal claim that local or cloud processing is better.
| Decision factor | Local software | Managed service |
|---|---|---|
| Workload | Can suit custom workflows and live conversion when you provision the required system. | Can handle live conversion or submitted on-demand jobs, depending on the service. |
| Control | May offer direct control over codecs, filters, and pipeline configuration. | May use managed or preset workflows; available controls depend on the service. |
| Operations | You provision and maintain the computing environment. | The provider runs processing infrastructure, while you configure jobs and manage relevant storage and delivery. |
| Timing | Can be used in a real-time pipeline if configured and provisioned for that workload. | Timing depends on the service: live APIs and asynchronous file-processing jobs serve different needs. |
| Output | Choose settings and tools to meet codec, rendition, packaging, audio, and caption needs. | Confirm the service supports the required codecs, output ladder, packaging, and media handling. |
On-demand cloud jobs
Google’s Transcoder API processes submitted jobs asynchronously and writes outputs to Cloud Storage. Google does not provide strong timing guarantees for completion, so this workflow is not suited to a user waiting for an immediate result. Google Cloud Transcoder API overview.

What does transcoding cost in quality and computing?
Re-encoding typically consumes more compute than copying encoded packets and, when lossy encoding is used, can reduce quality. The amount of change depends on the source, output settings, codec, and number of conversion steps; there is no universal quality-loss figure. Keep a high-quality original when possible, and avoid unnecessary repeated lossy transcodes.
For a streaming workflow, decide the target codec, resolution, bitrate range, and whether multiple renditions or processing are genuinely needed. Match the output to the destination and audience requirements rather than adding conversions by default.
Keep a YouTube stream running without transcoding the uploaded video
If your specific goal is to keep a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded videos, that is different from converting a source into new renditions. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live production or a transcoding workflow. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and start the stream; the cloud keeps it running without a home computer staying on. See StreamNeo.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOr let it run in the cloud
Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode it. If YouTube drops the stream, automatic recovery is included. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
