Delivery carries the prepared stream from an origin or content-delivery network to viewers. They describe different jobs in a workflow—not two mutually exclusive families of protocols.
Where contribution and delivery fit
A live stream can pass through several stages: a camera or other source is encoded, its feed is transported to a production facility or platform ingest point, and the resulting stream is delivered to viewers. Contribution is the source-to-production or source-to-platform leg. Delivery is the origin-to-viewer leg.
Protocol names alone do not determine a stream’s entire path. A platform can accept one protocol and package or distribute the content in another format; a gateway can also receive one format and output another. The right choice depends on the actual endpoints and workflow.
Protocols commonly used for contribution
Contribution protocols transport video from a source or encoder to a receiver, production facility, or cloud/platform ingest point. The Streaming Video Technology Alliance identifies RTMP, RTP, SRT, RIST, and Zixi among the options used for this work. They are not interchangeable in every deployment: latency goals, network conditions, interoperability, platform support, security, and operating complexity all matter.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
RTMP and RTP
RTMP and RTP are among the established contribution choices. Whether either is suitable depends on what the encoder and receiving endpoint support, as well as the network and operating requirements. The protocol name by itself does not establish end-to-end latency or resilience.
SRT and RIST
SRT is designed for low-latency live audio and video transport and is used at contribution and distribution endpoints, according to its developer, Haivision. “Low latency” is a design goal, not a guaranteed viewer experience: encoding, buffering, network path, and playback all contribute to total glass-to-glass delay. RIST is another contribution option; compatibility with the specific sender and receiver still needs to be checked.

Zixi
Zixi illustrates how a vendor’s system can span workflow stages. Its documentation describes network-aware error correction for transport and outputs that include HLS and MPEG-DASH. This is a vendor description, not an independent head-to-head performance comparison.
What the survey numbers do—and do not—say
In Haivision’s Broadcast Transformation Report 2024, 58% of respondents reported using SRT for low-latency video transport; the report also cited RTMP at 56% and UDP at 45% in its discussion of contribution protocols. These are survey results, not a census of the streaming industry or a current market-share estimate.

Protocols commonly used for delivery
Delivery sends streams from an origin or content-delivery network toward viewer devices. HTTP-based HLS and MPEG-DASH are common adaptive streaming approaches for this stage. Adaptive delivery can support playback across varied devices and network conditions, but the experience depends on the implementation and playback environment, not merely the protocol name.
HLS
HLS is a common HTTP-based delivery approach. It is not exclusively a video-on-demand format; live delivery is also possible, including low-latency variants in modern deployments. The supported mode and latency depend on the platform and implementation.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
MPEG-DASH
MPEG states that DASH supports both on-demand and live streaming over existing Internet infrastructure. It is therefore inaccurate to treat DASH as VOD-only. As with HLS, a particular deployment’s latency and device compatibility depend on its packaging, player, and delivery configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why protocol labels can overlap
Contribution and delivery describe workflow roles, so a protocol may appear in more than one role. Haivision describes SRT at both contribution and distribution endpoints. Zixi’s documented transport and HLS/DASH outputs likewise show how a vendor platform can bridge stages.

Platform support is specific to that service. For example, YouTube Live documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH as supported ingest protocols. That list should not be read as a general standard for other platforms, nor does it mean every encoder supports every option.
How to choose for a real workflow
Start with the endpoints and the problem to solve, rather than choosing a protocol by reputation. Compare the actual implementations on these points:
- Total glass-to-glass latency: measure or establish the full path from source capture through encoding, transport, platform processing, and playback. A protocol’s transport latency alone is not viewer latency.
- Network resilience: determine how the system handles packet loss, jitter, and unmanaged network conditions, and what recovery behavior the sender and receiver support.
- Compatibility: verify support across the encoder, receiver, platform ingest, packaging system, and viewer playback devices.
- Scale and delivery: consider whether the destination needs one receiver or a large audience, and how the delivery format integrates with the origin and CDN.
- Security: check the security features and configuration available at each stage, including the requirements of the receiving platform.
- Operations and cost: account for equipment or service requirements, monitoring, conversion between formats, and the staff effort needed to keep the workflow running.
There is no universal best contribution protocol, and the available protocol descriptions do not establish controlled, comparable benchmarks across all options. Test the selected sender-to-receiver path under the network and playback conditions that matter to the deployment.
A note on keeping a YouTube channel live
A cloud service that loops uploaded videos to a YouTube channel solves a different operational problem from choosing contribution or delivery protocols for a live production. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only service for keeping a channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos; it is not a general protocol recommendation or a camera-to-live production system. Its workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. See StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded videos stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
