Video resolution is the frame’s pixel dimensions, written width × height; aspect ratio is the relationship between its width and height. For example, 1920 × 1080 is a 16:9 frame commonly called 1080p. The terms describe different things: resolution tells you how many pixels make up the frame, while aspect ratio describes its shape.
What resolution and aspect ratio mean
Resolution: the number of pixels in a frame
A resolution such as 1920 × 1080 specifies a frame 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels high. Always read dimensions in width × height order. Labels such as 720p and 1080p conventionally identify progressive video by its vertical pixel count; the exact dimensions make the frame size clear.
Aspect ratio: the frame’s shape
Aspect ratio compares a frame’s width with its height. A 16:9 frame is widescreen landscape, 9:16 is portrait, and 1:1 is square. The ratio does not tell you the resolution: 1280 × 720 and 1920 × 1080 have different pixel counts but are both 16:9.
Common video resolution sizes
The following dimensions are YouTube’s examples for a default 16:9 computer-player format. They are platform recommendations, not a universal specification for every camera, file, display, or video standard.

YouTube says its player adapts to a video’s dimensions and the viewer’s device. Its Help documentation identifies 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for YouTube on a computer; other shapes, including 9:16, may receive padding in some desktop contexts. See YouTube’s video resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.
What size is 1080p video?
1080p commonly means 1920 × 1080 pixels in a 16:9 frame. That is 2,073,600 pixels per frame. The “1080” refers to the vertical pixel count in the conventional progressive label; writing 1920 × 1080 removes ambiguity about the dimensions.

What is the aspect ratio of 1920 × 1080?
1920 × 1080 has a 16:9 aspect ratio: divide both dimensions by 120 to get 16 × 9. It is widescreen landscape. Other dimensions can share the same ratio, such as 1280 × 720 and 3840 × 2160.
Is 4K 3840 × 2160 or 4096 × 2160?
Both dimensions are used for formats called 4K, but they are not the same frame. UHD/consumer 4K commonly means 3840 × 2160, a 16:9 frame. DCI 4K means 4096 × 2160, a wider 17:9 frame. Vimeo’s compression-guidelines examples distinguish DCI 4K from UHD 4K; when the distinction matters, state the dimensions and format rather than using “4K” alone. See Vimeo’s video and audio compression guidelines.

How to choose a resolution and aspect ratio
There is no single best resolution for every video. Choose dimensions that suit the footage you have and where people will watch it, then consider the practical costs of the larger file or stream.
- Match the destination. A 16:9 frame is YouTube’s standard computer-player shape. Portrait or square video may suit a different viewing context; check how the destination displays it.
- Start from the source footage. If your original material is smaller than your target dimensions, exporting at a larger size does not add captured detail. Avoid choosing dimensions that require unnecessary upscaling.
- Account for storage, bandwidth, and processing. More pixels mean more image data to encode and handle, though actual file size also depends on factors such as compression and content. The cited dimensions alone do not establish a universal file-size multiplier or a viewer-perceived quality threshold.
- Consider the whole frame, not just its pixel count. A correctly shaped, well-composed source can matter more than selecting a larger number of pixels that the source cannot support.
Should you add black bars to force an aspect ratio?
Usually, do not bake black bars or padding into the video just to force a different display shape. YouTube’s Help guidance says, “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” Its player can adapt to different video dimensions, although display behavior can vary by device and context. Keep the intended frame shape in the video and let the platform handle player presentation where possible. Read YouTube Help’s aspect-ratio guidance.

Keeping a pre-recorded YouTube video live
Resolution and aspect ratio also matter when a pre-recorded video is used in a continuous YouTube live stream: the uploaded video’s frame dimensions and shape determine what is being played. If you want that kind of always-on stream without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not go live from a camera.
