Choose the highest resolution that your streaming service, video, screen, playback device, internet connection, and data plan can support reliably. A 4K label alone does not guarantee a better-looking picture: every link in the playback chain matters, and a stable connection is as important as the peak speed.
What do SD, HD, FHD, and 4K mean?
Resolution describes how many pixels make up a video image. More pixels can show more detail when the video, display, and playback chain support them, but resolution is only one part of picture quality. Compression, the source video, HDR support, connection stability, and the display itself also affect what you see.
| Label | Common resolution | How Netflix labels it |
|---|---|---|
| SD | Definitions vary by service and format | Netflix’s cited recommendations do not assign an SD resolution here |
| HD | Often 720p or higher, depending on service | 720p HD |
| FHD | Commonly 1080p | 1080p FHD |
| UHD / 4K | Commonly 2160p | 4K UHD |
These labels are not universal guarantees. Services may define or offer quality levels differently, and a specific title or account plan may not include the resolution you want.
What internet speed do I need for streaming?
For Netflix, its current help-center recommendations are 3 Mbps or higher for 720p, 5 Mbps or higher for 1080p, and 15 Mbps or higher for 4K. Netflix notes that many factors can affect streaming quality; these figures are service recommendations, not a promise that every stream will hold that resolution. The figures were verified in 2026, but Netflix’s page does not state when they were first published. See Netflix’s recommended internet speeds.

| Netflix quality | Netflix-recommended connection speed |
|---|---|
| 720p HD | 3 Mbps or higher |
| 1080p FHD | 5 Mbps or higher |
| 4K UHD | 15 Mbps or higher |
Those thresholds apply to Netflix guidance, not every streaming service. YouTube publishes its own sustained-speed recommendations for watching videos. Separately, it publishes bitrate guidance for creators sending a live stream to YouTube. A viewer’s download speed and a creator’s encoder bitrate describe different parts of the stream and should not be substituted for each other. YouTube viewer system requirements and YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
If multiple people or devices share a connection, or if Wi-Fi performance fluctuates, a speed test result above a recommendation may still not mean the video will play consistently at that quality. Leave practical headroom where possible and assess stability as well as the headline speed.

What determines the best resolution for you?
Service plan and title
Check whether your account plan and the particular title offer the target quality. Availability can vary; do not assume that every video in a service’s catalog is available in 4K or HDR.
Screen and playback device
The display, streaming box or stick, app, and any receiver in between must support the target resolution and format. A 4K player cannot make a non-4K television display native 4K, and a compatible display cannot add detail that is absent from a lower-resolution source.

Connection and data limits
Use the relevant service’s guidance as a starting point, then consider whether the connection remains stable during playback and whether your data allowance can accommodate your viewing. The cited speed figures are not a universal data-use estimate.
Viewing conditions
There is no universal screen-size or viewing-distance threshold established here for when each viewer will notice a difference. The visible benefit depends on the screen, source, playback conditions, and the viewer; avoid treating a higher number as automatically better for everyone.

How to troubleshoot video that will not play in 4K or HDR
Check the chain in order. Netflix specifically says that the TV, streaming device, and receiver must support 4K or HDR when they are part of the setup, and identifies HDMI with HDCP 2.2 or later as a requirement for 4K/HDR playback. Netflix’s video-quality troubleshooting guidance.
- Confirm the title and account. Check the service’s listing for the specific video and confirm that your plan includes the desired quality. Availability can vary by title and plan.
- Check the display. Confirm that the TV or monitor supports the target resolution and, if relevant, the HDR format you expect.
- Check the player and app. Verify that the streaming device and the service app support that resolution and format.
- Check intermediate equipment. If the signal passes through an AV receiver or other device, confirm it supports the target format too. As a test, connecting the player directly to the TV can help identify whether an intermediate component is the limiting link.
- Check the HDMI connection. For Netflix 4K/HDR, use an HDMI connection that supports HDCP 2.2 or later, as Netflix specifies. Check the port and cable path rather than assuming every port on a device has identical capabilities.
- Check connection stability. Compare your available speed with the relevant service’s guidance, and consider whether Wi-Fi or other network use is interrupting playback. Meeting a recommendation is not proof that every playback session will stay at the target quality.
If the playback device is the limiting component, a compatible 4K streaming device may help. The cited device roundup is editorial rather than manufacturer documentation, so verify a candidate’s current specifications and compatibility with your service, display, and required formats before buying. An external player will not make an incompatible TV, title, service plan, or connection support 4K.

Choosing a setup without paying for unused quality
Compare the complete setup, not just the largest resolution printed on a device box. Before upgrading, check these factors:
- Maximum supported resolution and HDR: consider the screen, player, app, and any receiver together.
- Service and title access: confirm that the account plan and the content you watch offer the format.
- Connection: use the relevant platform’s guidance and prioritize a stable connection.
- Data allowance: check your provider’s terms if you have a usage cap; the speed recommendations above do not establish how much data a given viewing session will use.
For many viewers, the sensible choice is the highest quality their actual setup supports consistently—not necessarily the highest resolution available in a menu.
