Video game preservation through decompilation reconstructs readable, buildable source code from a shipped game executable. It can make a game’s software easier to inspect, maintain, and adapt when its original tools or hardware become difficult to use—but it does not, by itself, preserve every asset, service, or legal right needed to distribute and play the game.

What decompilation preserves—and what it does not

A shipped game usually arrives as machine code: instructions prepared for a specific processor and platform, rather than the human-readable source developers wrote. A decompilation project studies that executable and creates replacement source code intended to reproduce its behavior. The result can reveal how the program works and, in matching projects, can be compiled to recreate the original binary.

That reconstructed source is only one part of a game. Original art, music, fonts, dialogue, trademarks, ROM images, and online services may be separate from the code and subject to separate distribution rights. A source repository can therefore be useful for preservation or research without including everything required for a complete playable release. Some projects publish code and build instructions but expect users to provide their own lawfully obtained game assets.

How matching decompilation works

Decompedia defines matching decompilation as writing source code, typically C or C++, that compiles to the same exact binary as the original. Reaching that result involves more than translating machine instructions line by line: contributors infer functions, data structures, compiler behavior, and build settings, then repeatedly compare their compiled output with the shipped executable.

  1. Examine the executable. Reverse engineers use disassembly and other analysis techniques to inspect machine instructions and locate code and data.
  2. Infer program structure. They identify likely functions, data types, calling conventions, and relationships between code and game systems. The original source and design documents may be unavailable.
  3. Write replacement source. Contributors express the inferred behavior in readable source, often C or C++, and document assumptions as the work develops.
  4. Rebuild and compare. The project compiles the source with a defined toolchain and compares the result with the target executable. Differences guide further investigation and revision.
  5. Document the build. Tool versions, settings, inputs, and instructions help others reproduce and verify the result later.

A claim of “100% matching” is meaningful only in relation to a specified target and comparison method. In a matching-decompilation project, it generally means the project’s compiled output matches the chosen original binary exactly; it does not mean the project has recovered the original developers’ source files, included all game assets, or established permission to distribute the game.

How decompilation differs from emulation

Emulation recreates enough of a platform’s hardware or software environment for the original executable to run. Decompilation instead reconstructs human-readable source from the executable. These approaches solve different problems: emulation can make an old binary playable on another system, while decompilation can make its implementation more understandable and maintainable.

Retrotech ED64 Plus 340 In 1 Multi Game Cartridge For N64 Video Game Console
  • 🎮 Massive library of 340 classic N64 games on a single cartridge for endless entertainment.
  • 🎮 Region Free, works with USA, European, and Japanese systems.
  • 🎮 Includes various gaming genres from racing and adventure to fighting and puzzle games for diverse gaming experiences.
  • 🎮 Includes Retrotech printed instructions for a classic feel.

They can also complement each other. An emulator may provide a place to run and observe a game during reverse engineering; reconstructed source may make later maintenance or porting easier. Neither automatically supplies missing server-side content, clears rights, or preserves every element needed for an authentic experience.

Why preservation projects use decompilation

  • Make behavior inspectable. Readable code can expose undocumented mechanics and implementation details that are difficult to infer from a binary alone.
  • Retain technical knowledge. Source, tests, and build scripts can preserve knowledge that might otherwise disappear with obsolete tools, hardware, or institutional memory.
  • Support maintenance and adaptation. A documented source tree can help researchers and developers address compatibility with newer toolchains, explore ports, or investigate accessibility changes.
  • Create an auditable artifact. Reviewable code and reproducible build steps let contributors examine how claims about the reconstructed program are supported.

These benefits depend on the quality and documentation of the project. Reconstructed source is not automatically complete, reproducible, or authoritative simply because it exists.

What libraries and archives should preserve

The Library of Congress identifies uncompiled source code as its preferred software and video-game preservation content and also prefers a gold master build. That guidance points to a broader strategy: retain original materials where possible, and preserve enough context to understand and use them later.

  • Software and builds: uncompiled source code, when available, and a gold master build.
  • Identification and context: title, creator, creation date, publication place, publisher or distributor, rights information, production metadata, and identifiers.
  • Platform access: for console games, the proprietary platform or a virtual or emulated version may be needed to run the software.
  • Access controls: where DRM or encryption is present, rights clearance and usable keys may be necessary for preservation and access.

Decompilation can supplement these holdings when original source is missing or inaccessible; it should not be treated as a substitute for collecting surviving source, executable builds, documentation, and metadata. A reconstructed project is most useful when its target version, inputs, toolchain, and build process are recorded alongside the code.

Legal questions: analysis is not the same as release

Reverse engineering, circumventing a technological protection measure, copying software, and distributing a reconstructed game are distinct acts. A project’s legal position can depend on which of these acts it undertakes, the rights in the software and assets, how copies were obtained, and who can access the result. The following U.S. provisions are limited examples, not a general legal clearance or legal advice.

Interoperability under 17 U.S.C. § 1201

Title 17, Section 1201 contains a limited interoperability provision. It applies to a person who lawfully obtained the right to use a program and needs to identify elements required for interoperability of an independently created program, to the extent the acts do not infringe copyright. It is not a general permission to publish a reconstructed game or its assets.

Video-game preservation exemptions

The cited text of 37 C.F.R. § 201.40(b)(19) allows specified circumvention involving lawfully acquired complete games when server authentication has ended, including restoring local play or preservation by an eligible library, archive, or museum. It also addresses qualifying games no longer reasonably available commercially for preservation by eligible institutions. The rule carries eligibility, noncommercial-activity, security, and access or distribution conditions.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2024 recommendation records that the video-game preservation exemption began in 2015 and recommends renewal of the preservation exemptions. These exemptions are time-limited and may change in later triennial proceedings. Anyone relying on them should check the regulation in force at the time and get qualified legal advice about the specific activity. An exemption for specified preservation acts does not create a general right to release reconstructed code, ROM images, original assets, or server content to the public.

What existing projects can teach preservationists

Example Documented focus What it illustrates
pret A community reverse-engineering favorite games, including multiple Game Boy and Game Boy Color projects. Community-led work can document how game engines were implemented and organize research across multiple titles.
Super Mario 64 Joseph Godfrey’s legal article examines a fan project that reverse engineered the game and released reconstructed source code. A reconstructed-source release raises questions distinct from simply studying an executable, including fair use and distribution.
N64 projects listed by n64.dev The site lists decompilation work and reverse-engineering environments, including Ghidra for specific projects. Tools and project scope are tied to particular targets; a tool listing alone does not establish a project’s completeness or legal status.

Project pages and completion indicators can change. When evaluating a project, rely on its current repository and documentation for its status rather than assuming that a listed project is complete or that its results cover every release of a game.

How to evaluate a decompilation project

For a library, researcher, or reader deciding what a project actually preserves, check the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Target and verification: Which platform, region, and game version is being reconstructed? Does the project document whether it aims for matching output, behavioral similarity, or another result, and how that result is tested?
  • Scope: Is the repository code-only, or does it include assets and other content? What must a user obtain separately to build or run it?
  • Build reproducibility: Are toolchain versions, compiler settings, dependencies, and build steps documented well enough for another person to reproduce the result?
  • Rights and provenance: Does the project explain the provenance and licensing of its code and assets, and what it permits others to do?
  • Purpose: Is the output intended as preservation research, a source port, a modding base, or a consumer release? These purposes can imply different technical requirements and legal considerations.

Those checks help distinguish a useful technical artifact from a complete preservation package. A code repository may answer important questions about a game’s implementation while leaving asset access, original platform behavior, and long-term institutional custody to other parts of the preservation effort.
