Clean YouTube framing starts with three decisions: choose horizontal or vertical orientation for the intended viewer, decide what the shot should emphasize, and check the space around your subject before recording. The rule of thirds is a useful guide—not a requirement; a centered speaker can work just as well when direct address and simplicity are the goal.
Choose the frame shape for where people will watch
Decide on orientation before arranging the subject. Horizontal framing suits conventional YouTube videos viewed on computers or TVs; vertical framing may better suit Shorts and other vertical formats. The shape affects how much of the scene fits, so changing it after composing can force an unwanted crop. See UW–Madison DesignLab’s video guidance.
Compose around the subject and purpose
Centered or off-center?
For a direct-to-camera speaker with little relevant background, centered framing can feel clear and deliberate. If the surroundings matter, or the shot benefits from space beside the subject, try placing them off-center. Imagine a three-by-three grid and position the subject near a line or intersection. This rule of thirds is a starting point, not a law: centering is not automatically wrong, and off-center placement does not automatically improve a shot. Nikon’s composition guide explains the grid and shot choices.
Check eyes, headroom, and gaze
For a person speaking to camera, look at the space above the head and where the eyes sit in the frame. Eyes near the upper third are a useful reference, not a fixed measurement. Make headroom look intentional rather than leaving a distracting gap or cutting too close. If the subject looks away from the lens, leave room in front of the gaze—often called lead room or nose room—so the look has space to travel.

Choose a shot size for the information viewers need
- Wide or establishing shot: shows the setting and gives context.
- Medium shot: keeps the subject prominent while retaining some surroundings.
- Close-up: emphasizes a face, object, or important detail, with less environmental context.
When framing a person, avoid crops at major joints that can make the cut look accidental. Review the whole frame, not only the face. Nikon’s guide covers establishing, medium, and close-up shots.
Set up a clean frame before recording
- Pick the destination and orientation. Decide whether the video is intended for a conventional horizontal presentation or a vertical format before composing.
- Identify the subject and the role of the setting. If the background adds little, a simple centered address may suit the video. If the setting helps tell the story, include it and consider an off-center composition.
- Check the face and surrounding space. Make headroom intentional, use eye placement near the upper third as a reference, and leave space in front of an off-camera gaze.
- Choose the shot scale. Include enough of the environment for context, or move closer when emphasis or detail matters. Check that any crop of a person does not land awkwardly at a major joint.
- Scan the background. Remove distractions where possible. Choose a background that fits the content, and use contrast or texture to help the subject stand out. YouTube’s filming tips recommend planning location and background as part of the shot.
- Stabilize the device if the frame should stay fixed. A tripod is one option; a stable table, stacked books, or other secure support can do the basic job. Check that the device will not shift during the take.
- For multi-shot videos, plan the shots. A short shot list can record framing, angle, and camera movement in advance, helping you avoid unnecessary takes. YouTube’s filming guide recommends planning shots before filming.
Use a framing choice that fits the shot
| Choice | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Centered speaker | The video is a direct address and symmetry or a simple frame suits the message. | There is less room to show a meaningful setting beside the subject. |
| Off-center thirds placement | The surroundings matter or the composition needs space in front of a gaze. | Placement needs to feel intentional; the grid alone does not guarantee a stronger image. |
| Wide, medium, or close-up | Choose according to whether viewers need context, subject-plus-context, or detail. | Wider shots show more surroundings; closer shots reduce context and emphasize the subject or detail. |
| Horizontal or vertical | Match the intended destination and viewing context. | The frame shape changes which parts of the subject and background fit. |
Optional support for a steady shot
If you need the camera to remain in one place, a smartphone tripod with a phone holder is one possible aid. A stable table or stacked books can also support a fixed shot. The core skill is deciding what belongs in the frame, not buying a particular accessory. UW–Madison DesignLab discusses stabilization and improvised supports in its video guide.
