To protect streamed video, encrypt its media samples during packaging, then deliver the keys or licenses only through a playback flow your authorized players can use. Encryption, DRM policy, browser support, and license services are separate parts of that system: none can substitute for the others, and no encryption setup makes content impossible to capture.

What video encryption does—and what it does not do

Video encryption transforms media samples during packaging so a player needs the appropriate key and a compatible decryption path to play them. Protection metadata in the media or manifest helps the client find the information needed to request playback authorization.

DRM systems add the surrounding key or license handling and playback policy. They are not the encryption operation itself. A protected stream therefore depends on a working chain: packaging, key and license services, application policy, a compatible player, and a supported device.

Encryption can help restrict playback to authorized clients, but it is not an absolute barrier to copying or capture. The W3C’s Encrypted Media Extensions specification explicitly says, “This specification does not define a content protection or Digital Rights Management system.”

How protected video reaches a viewer

  1. Choose a protection policy and create content keys. Decide who should be allowed to play the asset and what playback conditions your service needs to enforce. Key creation and policy decisions belong to the content and license workflow, not to EME itself.
  2. Package and encrypt the media. An encryptor processes the relevant samples and writes the necessary protection metadata into the media or manifest. Microsoft notes that packaging may be integrated with an encoder; for PlayReady, Microsoft does not include a packager in PlayReady deliverables.
  3. Deliver the manifest and media segments. The selected streaming format carries the encoded representations and protection signaling. Adaptive streaming can switch representations as network conditions and client capabilities change, so the selected material’s protection metadata and key IDs must remain consistent.
  4. Have the player request authorization. In web playback, the application uses Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) to discover and interact with available key systems. The application and service handle authentication and authorization. In Google’s documented Widevine Cloud License Service flow, a client request goes through a license proxy, which applies business rules before license fulfillment.
  5. Decrypt for playback on a compatible client. A supported player obtains the applicable license or key and decrypts samples for playback. A DRM header or manifest entry helps locate protection information; it cannot add support to an incompatible device or player.

Encryption, DRM, EME, and key services compared

Layer Role What to verify
Media encryption and packaging Encrypts media samples and places protection metadata in the packaged media or manifest. Container and encryption-scheme support, key and key-ID design, and consistency across the representations you deliver.
DRM system Provides a system-specific protection and playback-license path around encrypted media. Target platforms, supported schemes, credentials, license-service integration, and the policies your service intends to enforce.
EME Browser API for discovering and interacting with key systems and encrypted media; it is not itself a DRM system. Browser and key-system availability, media support, and your application’s authentication and authorization design.
License or key service Processes playback requests and supplies the applicable license or key under the service’s rules. Service integration, credentials, request handling, and policy enforcement.
Player and device Requests authorization and decrypts supported content for playback. Actual browser, player, operating-system and device versions, plus container and scheme compatibility.

How the major DRM options differ

Common Encryption (CENC) standardizes encryption signaling and formats referenced by vendor DRM systems. In Microsoft’s described workflow, the same content keys can be used across DRM headers for an asset. That can reduce duplicate packaging, but it does not make every device or DRM implementation compatible: each client still needs scheme support and its applicable license or key path.

System or format Practical considerations
Widevine Google documents EME and Common Encryption support across platforms and schemes. Check the specific target devices, browser/player path, supported cenc or cbcs mode, packaging, and license-service integration. Google says licensees receive organization-specific test and production credentials, and device license requests must be processed by a license proxy.
PlayReady Microsoft’s version-specific documentation says PlayReady 1.x–3.x supports cenc CTR; PlayReady 4.0 and later supports cenc and cbcs. The described system does not support cens or cbc1. Check the client version, delivery format, packaging route, and license/header handling.
FairPlay Streaming Apple describes FairPlay Streaming as protection for HLS delivery and playback on Apple platforms. Check HLS authoring, Apple client support, key-server implementation, production credential eligibility, and cbcs handling. Apple’s production credential process requires approval; its stated path is for a content owner or licensee whose team provides a consumer streaming service.

Apple’s archived technical note TN2454 gives Apple-specific guidance that Apple devices support cbcs for fMP4 sample encryption and recommends rotating content keys at HLS segment granularity. Because that note is archived, verify this detail against current deployment documentation before relying on it.

Plan an implementation around your actual playback targets

1. Define the scope and policy

  • List the browsers, player versions, operating systems, and device models you need to support. “Supports DRM” is not a sufficiently precise compatibility requirement.
  • Decide which playback rules your license service must enforce, and how the application will authenticate and authorize a request.
  • Determine whether you need requirements such as expiration or offline playback. Confirm that the chosen DRM, license service, player, and device support the required behavior.

2. Select the DRM, format, and encryption scheme together

Compare options against target-device coverage, container and scheme support, packaging effort, license/key-service needs, credentials, operational requirements, and service policy. Do not choose a scheme solely because it is part of a common format: the specific client must implement it.

For PlayReady, Microsoft identifies Common Encryption (ISO/IEC 23001-7) as the widely used format and notes that packaging may come from open-source encryptors or professional encoder companies. A packager may be integrated with the encoder, but encryption and license handling remain distinct jobs.

3. Arrange credentials and service flows

Confirm the applicable test and production credentials and service requirements with the DRM provider. Google says Widevine licensees receive organization-specific credentials, and a license proxy handles device requests. Apple requires approval for FairPlay production credentials and describes eligibility for a content owner or licensee providing a consumer streaming service.

4. Package, test, and validate end to end

  • Verify that each packaged representation has protection metadata and key IDs consistent with the intended content keys.
  • Test the actual manifest and segments with each target player and device version, including adaptive switches between representations.
  • Exercise the complete authorization path: application authentication, license request, proxy or license-service policy, response, and successful playback.
  • Test failure cases such as an unsupported scheme, rejected request, missing or mismatched key ID, unavailable service, or expired authorization. Confirm that the application reports a useful failure rather than implying encryption alone can resolve it.
  • Recheck vendor documentation and credentials before deployment; platform support and service policies can change.

Common implementation problems and how to diagnose them

Symptom Likely area to inspect What to check
Playback fails on one browser or device but works on another. Client capability or scheme compatibility Compare the exact player, browser, operating-system and device versions, the selected key system, and the container/encryption mode against documented support.
The player sees protected content but cannot obtain playback authorization. Application, license request, proxy, or credentials Check application authentication and authorization, request routing, proxy policy, and test-versus-production credentials. For Widevine, Google’s documented flow routes requests through a license proxy.
A license is returned but the media will not play. Packaging metadata or client compatibility Check that the license/key corresponds to the key ID signaled for the selected representation, and that the player’s container and scheme are supported.
Playback breaks when adaptive streaming changes quality. Representation packaging and signaling Inspect the metadata, key IDs, and encryption consistency for each representation the player may select.
One DRM path works while another does not for the same asset. Per-system support and licensing Common Encryption does not guarantee universal compatibility. Check each DRM’s client support, encryption mode, header, credentials, and license path independently.
A deployment relies on a production credential that has not been approved. Provider onboarding Confirm provider eligibility and credential approval before planning production. Apple describes an approval process for FairPlay production credentials; Google identifies organization-specific Widevine credentials.

What StreamNeo does—and does not do

StreamNeo is a cloud service that keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it is not a video-encryption or DRM packaging service. It does not encrypt a stream for protected playback or provide a DRM license flow. For its separate use case—looping uploaded videos on YouTube—its cloud operation means your computer does not need to stay on, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
