Use a fast preset when turnaround, live throughput, or batch deadlines matter most; choose a slower preset when the encode is offline and saving bitrate or file size at acceptable quality is worth the extra time. A slower preset does not guarantee a visibly better result: its effect depends on the encoder, rate-control mode, and source footage. Compare settings with a representative clip using the same encoder and output requirements.
What an encoding preset controls
A speed preset controls how much computation an encoder spends searching for coding decisions. Faster presets limit that search to finish sooner, generally reducing compression efficiency; slower presets test more options and may improve quality at a fixed bitrate or reduce bitrate at a selected quality target. The result varies by encoder and content, so do not assume a slower preset will always make a worthwhile difference.
Preset names and scales are encoder-specific. For example, x265 uses names such as veryfast, medium, and slow, while NVIDIA NVENC uses a P1–P7 scale. These labels are not equivalent levels, and rate control is a separate choice from the preset. Consult the documentation for the encoder and software version you are actually using.
| Choice | Typical tradeoff | Often suits |
|---|---|---|
| Faster preset | Less encode time, generally lower compression efficiency | Live output, previews, or deadline-driven batches |
| Slower preset | More computation; may improve quality at a fixed bitrate or reduce bitrate at a quality target | Offline delivery or archiving when time is available |
How rate control affects the result
At a fixed target bitrate, a more thorough encode may produce better quality, but the visible improvement depends on the encoder and footage. With a constant-quality target, a slower encode may reach that target using fewer bits. Neither mode promises a particular file-size reduction or encoding-time ratio.

CRF and other rate-control options are not universal quality scales across encoders. Check the documentation for the specific encoder and wrapper you use; FFmpeg options and their meanings can vary by encoder.
When to use a fast or slow preset
Live streaming and real-time capture
Choose a preset that can keep up with your live workload. Before tuning the preset, check the destination’s approved codec, bitrate, and keyframe requirements. YouTube’s live guidance recommends CBR and keyframes about two seconds apart, not exceeding four seconds; it also lists different ingest recommendations by codec and resolution. These platform requirements can change, so check YouTube’s current guidance before streaming.

Test with representative audio and movement before going live. YouTube specifically advises testing material similar to the planned stream. A faster preset cannot compensate for an unreliable connection or settings that exceed the destination’s requirements.
Offline delivery and archiving
A slower preset can be worth testing when encoding time is available and you want to reduce bitrate or file size at an acceptable quality level. Compare the space or bandwidth saved against the extra encoding time and compute used. Do not assume that slow or very slow will produce a meaningful improvement for every clip.

Previews and batch processing
Use a faster preset for frequent previews or large batches with a deadline, where throughput matters more than marginal compression gains. If storage or delivery bandwidth is the bigger constraint and the work is offline, test a slower setting before committing the whole batch.
How to compare presets fairly
- Choose a short clip representative of the final footage, including motion, texture, and noise—not only a static opening frame.
- Keep the codec, resolution, frame rate, source, and output constraints the same for each test.
- Use the same rate-control mode. At a fixed bitrate, compare visual quality; at a fixed quality target, compare bitrate or file size and encoding time.
- Record the encoder, version or build, preset, rate-control settings, and results so the comparison can be repeated.
- Check that the output meets delivery or platform requirements before choosing a preset for the full job.
HandBrake’s official preset descriptions illustrate that speed, picture quality, and file size are separate considerations; its descriptions should not be treated as controlled results for every codec or source. Hardware presets use dedicated media engines optimized for speed. Likewise, NVENC preset behavior and AV1 encoder speed-quality controls have their own documented tradeoffs. Consult the documentation for your specific encode path rather than transferring settings or expectations between encoders.

FAQ
Does a slower preset always improve video quality?
No. A slower preset spends more computation searching for coding decisions, but whether that produces a visible improvement depends on the encoder, rate-control mode, and source. Test representative footage.
Will a slower preset make my file smaller?
It may use a lower bitrate at a selected quality target, but there is no general percentage reduction that applies across encoders and videos. Compare file size at a consistent quality target using your own footage.

Are x265 preset names equivalent to NVENC P1–P7?
No. Preset scales are encoder-specific. NVIDIA’s SDK 10 article describes P1 as fastest and P7 as slowest, but that vendor documentation should not be assumed to describe every current driver or software integration. Check the documentation for your encoder and version.
What preset should I use for live streaming?
Use a preset that reliably keeps up with real-time encoding, then verify the destination’s codec, bitrate, and keyframe requirements. Test a representative stream before going live; a preset choice alone cannot ensure a reliable stream.
How can I tell whether a preset change is worthwhile?
Test the same representative clip with the same output settings. At a fixed bitrate, compare visual quality; at a fixed quality target, compare bitrate or file size and encoding time. Record the encoder and version so the results are meaningful and repeatable.
