Video encoding compresses your camera, screen, or prerecorded video into a stream a platform can receive and viewers can play. The encoder’s settings—especially bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and keyframe interval—shape picture quality, computer workload, upload demand, compatibility, and sometimes latency. There is no single best bitrate or codec for every live stream: use settings supported by your platform and stable on your connection and hardware.

What is video encoding?

Video encoding is the process of compressing a video source into a digital stream. An encoder may be software running on your computer’s CPU or hardware built into a GPU. It takes successive frames, represents their visual information using a codec, and produces data for delivery to a streaming platform.

The stream is not just a picture. Its format and settings must also suit the platform’s ingest system, which receives the stream. After ingest, the platform may transcode it into other versions for viewers. Encoding is the creator-side conversion; transcoding is a separate downstream conversion.

The settings that interact

  • Bitrate: the amount of data allocated to the stream over time.
  • Resolution: the dimensions of each encoded frame, such as 1920 × 1080.
  • Frame rate: the number of frames sent each second, such as 30 or 60 fps.
  • Codec: the method used to compress and represent video, such as H.264, HEVC, or VP9.
  • Preset: for software encoders such as x264, a choice that trades encoding workload against the amount of processing devoted to compression.
  • Keyframes and GOP: keyframes provide reference points in a group of pictures (GOP); their spacing can affect platform compatibility and playback transitions.

How does bitrate affect a live stream?

More bitrate can carry more image information, which can help preserve detail and motion. It also uses more upload capacity. If the bitrate is too high for the available upstream connection, the stream may become unstable; if it is too low for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene, details can blur or blockiness can become visible. A higher bitrate cannot fix an overloaded encoder or a codec, resolution, or protocol the platform does not support.

Bitrate needs depend on resolution, frame rate, and scene motion. Fast gameplay, sports, or a busy camera shot changes more from frame to frame than a mostly static presentation. OBS Project’s 2017 x264 guide says a high-motion 1080p60 example using the veryfast preset may need more than 8,000 kbps, while low-motion content can work at much lower bitrate. That is an illustrative OBS example, not a universal recommendation or a current platform limit; the guide’s assumptions and the platform’s current requirements matter.

Choose settings as a set, not in isolation

  • Higher resolution and frame rate mean more visual content to encode, so they can demand more processing and bitrate.
  • More motion can require more bitrate to preserve smooth-looking detail at the same resolution and frame rate.
  • A more demanding software-encoding preset can use more CPU. Whether that improves the result at your chosen bitrate depends on the encoder and whether the computer can keep up.
  • Your upload connection needs headroom beyond the configured stream bitrate for a stable send. If the stream drops frames or the platform reports bitrate instability, lower the stream demand or address the connection before increasing bitrate.

Start with the streaming platform’s current settings for the chosen protocol, then test with representative content. Check both the platform’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s performance indicators rather than raising bitrate by default.

Should you use software or hardware encoding?

Software encoding such as x264 uses the CPU. OBS Project notes that x264 can provide strong quality per bitrate, but encoding at high resolution and high frame rate can place a heavy load on the processor. x264 presets trade CPU use against encoding work; the appropriate choice depends on whether your system can sustain the workload while running your other applications.

Hardware encoding moves the work to a specialized component in a GPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they take work off the CPU. It also cautions that earlier generations of hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264 at its default veryfast preset. The result depends on the hardware generation, settings, content, and platform support—not simply whether encoding is labelled hardware or software.

How to decide

  • Try hardware encoding if your GPU has a compatible encoder and the CPU is struggling to encode reliably. Confirm the platform accepts the selected codec and test for stability.
  • Try software encoding if your CPU has enough headroom and you prefer its quality at the bitrate available to you. Reduce the processing demand if the system cannot maintain the stream.
  • Compare on your actual workload: test the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and representative scene, then check stream health and computer load.

A graphics card with a hardware video encoder is a conditional option for a computer that cannot encode reliably or efficiently with its current setup; it is not a required purchase for every streamer.

Why do streaming platforms have different settings?

Platforms accept particular protocols, codecs, and stream formats. A setting that works for one ingest path may be invalid or perform differently on another. YouTube’s current protocol comparison lists H.264 for RTMPS; H.264 or HEVC for HLS; and H.264 or VP9 for DASH. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and says HLS and DASH ingestion are encrypted as well.

YouTube says newer codecs such as VP9 and HEVC can be more efficient than H.264, potentially allowing higher quality at a given bitrate or similar quality at a lower bitrate. Codec availability is tied to the selected ingest protocol, however. YouTube also notes that HLS and DASH typically incur greater latency than RTMP because they are segment-based. This is YouTube’s protocol guidance, not a latency measurement that applies universally to every platform or setup.

YouTube HLS has specific ingest requirements

If you choose YouTube HLS, follow YouTube’s HLS-specific documentation rather than applying these requirements to other platforms or protocols. The current guide specifies:

  • Muxed audio and video in M2TS format.
  • H.264 or HEVC video, at up to 60 fps.
  • A closed GOP.
  • Single-track AAC audio.
  • One encoded stream at the highest resolution intended for viewers; YouTube handles transcoding to other resolutions and bitrates.
  • Media segments generally one to four seconds long, with a maximum of five seconds.

YouTube’s Live API also exposes stream resolution and frame rate configuration, including variable detection, and reports health issues involving bitrate, codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio or video presence, and keyframe frequency. The current API health guidance recommends a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less and flags unsupported codecs or open GOP settings. Treat that as YouTube-specific guidance and check the current creator-facing requirements for the protocol you actually use.

What are keyframes, and how do they affect playback?

A keyframe is a frame that can be decoded as a reference without relying on earlier frames. Other frames in the GOP can refer to it, which helps compression, but a receiver or player needs suitable reference points to begin or adjust playback. Keyframe spacing is therefore both an encoding choice and a compatibility concern.

Use the interval required by the platform and protocol rather than assuming one universal setting. For YouTube’s Live API health guidance, keyframe frequency should be four seconds or less; YouTube also flags open GOP configurations. OBS recommends a consistent keyframe interval to help the viewer’s quality selector transition smoothly. Follow the relevant platform’s current instructions if they differ.

What is transcoding, and who controls viewer quality?

Transcoding happens after a platform receives a stream. The platform can convert the incoming feed into multiple versions with different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates. This lets viewers choose a version that suits their device and connection, or receive an appropriate version automatically where the platform offers that behavior.

The creator’s encoder produces the initial feed; it does not itself create all the viewer versions. Whether a platform transcodes a particular stream, and which playback choices it offers, depends on that platform’s current service and policies. Do not treat older general descriptions of a platform’s transcoding as a guarantee that every stream receives every option.

How to configure and troubleshoot a live encode

Configuration checklist

  1. Choose the platform and ingest protocol. Read the current platform instructions for that path before selecting a codec or format.
  2. Set a supported resolution and frame rate. Choose values your hardware can encode and your upload connection can sustain; use the platform’s documented limits.
  3. Select a codec and encoder. Check protocol compatibility, then choose software or hardware encoding based on available CPU/GPU headroom and stability.
  4. Set bitrate for the content and platform. Account for resolution, frame rate, scene motion, upload capacity, and the platform’s stated limits. Do not treat the OBS high-motion example as a universal target.
  5. Set keyframes and GOP as required. For YouTube’s Live API health guidance, keep keyframe frequency at four seconds or less and avoid open GOP where YouTube flags it.
  6. Verify audio and stream format. Confirm required audio is present and use the protocol’s required packaging; YouTube HLS, for example, specifies muxed M2TS with single-track AAC audio.
  7. Test a representative stream. Check platform health messages and encoder performance under the same sort of motion and workload expected during the live broadcast.

Common symptoms and fixes

  • Unstable stream or bitrate health warning: the configured bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or the connection may be fluctuating. Reduce the stream’s data demand and check the connection; increasing bitrate is not a remedy for insufficient upload headroom.
  • Encoder overload or dropped frames during encoding: encoding demand may exceed CPU/GPU capability. Reduce resolution or frame rate, choose a less demanding x264 preset, or try a compatible hardware encoder and test again.
  • Blurry or blocky motion: bitrate may be insufficient for the scene’s motion at the selected resolution and frame rate. Check the platform’s supported range and available upload capacity before adjusting.
  • Platform rejects the stream or reports codec/GOP trouble: verify codec support for the selected protocol and check keyframe frequency and GOP type against current platform guidance.
  • Viewers do not get the expected quality choices: those options depend on platform transcoding and current service behavior, not solely on the creator’s encoder settings. Check the platform’s current stream-health and playback guidance.
  • Unexpected delay: the ingest protocol can affect latency. YouTube says HLS and DASH typically have greater latency than RTMP because they use segments; compare only protocols your platform supports and select based on the trade-off you need.

Keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without encoding at home

For a prerecorded video or playlist that needs to loop on YouTube 24/7, a local encoder is one approach, but it leaves a computer and home connection responsible for sending the stream. StreamNeo is a cloud service for YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer can be off. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery starts the stream again if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
