Video color encoding is the set of rules that turns image colors into signal values and tells equipment how to interpret them. It is not one setting called “color space”: a complete description can include color primaries, transfer characteristics, matrix coefficients, and quantization range. These properties need to be interpreted together so that production, encoding, distribution, and decoding preserve the intended colors.

What does video color encoding describe?

A video signal needs more than pixel numbers. Its encoding describes how those numbers relate to colors and light, and how a decoder should turn them back into an image. Standards can signal these properties through defined code points and metadata; the applicable format determines which properties are present and how they are represented. ITU-T H Supplement 19 describes these properties as part of a workflow in which signals are produced, encoded, distributed, and decoded consistently: ITU-T H Supplement 19.

The main pieces answer different questions: which colors can be represented, how light-related values are encoded, how color components are combined or separated, and which numeric range the signal uses. Other format details, such as bit depth and chroma sampling, also affect how much image information is represented, but they are not substitutes for the encoding properties.

Which properties make up a video color encoding?

Color primaries and gamut

Color primaries and a white point establish the colorimetric basis of a signal and help define its gamut—the range of colors it can represent. A decoder or conversion workflow needs to know these values to interpret or transform colors correctly. Rec. 709 is a familiar HDTV example, not a universal set of primaries.

Transfer characteristics

A transfer characteristic describes the relationship between light-related values and encoded signal values. It should not be confused with the behavior a display uses to convert a signal into emitted light. The Color.org BT.709 registry distinguishes these concepts: BT.709 specifies an opto-electronic transfer function, but does not define a display electro-optical transfer function (EOTF); it points to ITU-R BT.1886 for display behavior. See the BT.709 registry.

Matrix coefficients

When a video signal uses Y′CbCr, matrix coefficients describe how its nonlinear R′G′B′ components are transformed into Y′, Cb, and Cr components. The correct coefficients depend on the applicable standard. Using an incorrect matrix during encoding, decoding, or conversion can produce incorrect color or brightness relationships.

Quantization range

Quantization range defines how signal values are mapped into the available code values. Limited and full range are distinct choices. Do not infer which range applies just from whether a signal is labeled RGB or Y′CbCr: check the format’s signaling and the workflow’s settings. The Linux V4L documentation describes limited range as the Rec. 709 default it documents, while also allowing full range.

How are RGB and Y′CbCr video different?

R′G′B′ represents color with three nonlinear signal components. Y′CbCr is a related representation used commonly for video and image distribution: a matrix transform derives Y′ and two color-difference components, Cb and Cr, from R′G′B′. ITU-T H Supplement 19 describes Y′CbCr as a common way of encoding RGB information for distribution.

The prime marks matter: R′G′B′ and Y′CbCr components are nonlinear signal values, rather than linear-light RGB values. Y′ is luma, not necessarily physical luminance. Luma is calculated from the nonlinear signal components according to a matrix; luminance is a physical measure of light. Treating them as interchangeable can lead to mistaken assumptions about brightness or conversion.

“YUV” is sometimes used informally or in documents to refer to Y′CbCr, but it is not an exact synonym for every digital Y′CbCr encoding. The matrix relationship and coefficients depend on the applicable standard. For the relevant code-point definitions, see ITU-T H.273.

What does Rec. 709 specify?

Rec. 709 is a useful concrete example because it is a standard for HDTV production and international programme exchange. The Color.org registry, referencing ITU-R BT.709-6, lists these primaries and white point:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Colorimetric value Rec. 709 chromaticity coordinates
Red primary (0.640, 0.330)
Green primary (0.300, 0.600)
Blue primary (0.150, 0.060)
D65 white point (0.3127, 0.3290)

For its Rec. 709 Y′CbCr encoding, the Linux kernel’s V4L documentation gives this luma equation: Y′ = 0.2126R′ + 0.7152G′ + 0.0722B′. The same documentation describes Rec. 709 as the general HDTV colorspace and lists its default transfer function, Y′CbCr encoding, and limited-range quantization. Those coefficients and defaults are specific to that documented Rec. 709 case; they should not be applied indiscriminately to other video standards. See the Linux V4L colorspace definitions.

How should you check a video signal’s encoding?

When diagnosing a mismatch or comparing two signal descriptions, check each property rather than relying on a single label such as “Rec. 709,” “RGB,” or “YUV.” A useful checklist is:

  • Primaries and white point: Do they match the intended color gamut?
  • Transfer characteristic: Does the signal’s encoding characteristic match how it was produced and how the next stage interprets it?
  • Matrix coefficients: If the signal is Y′CbCr, is the correct matrix used for its standard?
  • Quantization range: Is the signal limited or full range, and is that choice signaled and interpreted consistently?
  • Format details: For an end-to-end comparison, also check bit depth, chroma sampling, and how the properties are signaled in that format.

These checks matter at every conversion boundary: camera or renderer to encoder, encoder to distribution format, and decoder to display or editing application. Standards define code points for several of these properties, but not every theoretically possible combination is common in practice. Use the actual format and its signaling rather than assuming that any combination is valid or intended.
