OCP provides a standard interface framework for connecting intellectual-property (IP) blocks in a system-on-chip (SoC); a programmable accelerator adds specialized, parallel hardware whose operations are controlled by software. In Achim Nohl’s 2007 design argument, the combination makes it possible to explore SoC architectures while retaining some flexibility to adapt codec processing to different standards or later software changes. OCP is the integration context, not the codec or accelerator itself.
What is an OCP-based programmable accelerator?
It is a codec-focused hardware block designed to connect to other SoC IP through an OCP interface and to perform demanding operations using a mix of specialized datapath hardware and software-controlled program flow. “OCP-based” describes the interface and integration approach; it does not mean that OCP defines the accelerator’s codec algorithms.
Accellera describes the Open Core Protocol as a common standard for IP-core interfaces, or sockets, intended to facilitate plug-and-play SoC design. In Nohl’s 2007 article, that common interface is useful during architecture exploration: designers can consider different processor, interconnect, memory, and peripheral IP as they shape a subsystem or platform. A standard interface can ease integration, but it does not remove the need to implement, configure, and verify the connected blocks.
Why combine a programmable accelerator with codec hardware?
Codec workloads contain operations that benefit from specialized, wide, parallel datapaths. A purely hardwired implementation can be efficient for its intended function, but changing its behavior may require hardware redesign. Nohl’s proposed compromise keeps hardware specialized for codec processing while using an instruction decoder and program control to direct functional units.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
The article’s rationale is that this arrangement can support reuse across algorithm variations or codec standards and allow late software changes to heuristics. It highlights encoder-side heuristics such as motion estimation as consequential to compression and quality. That is a design rationale, not a guarantee that programmability will always improve image quality, performance, or power efficiency.
Parallel work on pixel blocks
Video compression operations often work on blocks of pixels, creating opportunities to process data in parallel. Nohl gives an illustrative datapath width of 16 × 16 × 8 bits, or 2,048 bits, for processing a pixel block. The figure explains the kind of parallel hardware the article has in mind; it is not a universal codec requirement.

Software control and reuse
In the article’s model, instructions and program control select or sequence accelerator functions, while the datapath performs operations in parallel. This allows some behavior to change in software rather than requiring every decision to be permanently fixed in hardware. It may be useful when a design must accommodate algorithm changes, but the amount of reuse depends on the accelerator’s supported operations and the software and verification work needed for each target.
How OCP fits into an SoC design
- Choose the system architecture. Identify the processor, memory, interconnect, codec accelerator, and other IP needed for the target product.
- Connect IP through defined interfaces. OCP supplies a common interface framework for IP cores; it does not choose the architecture or make different blocks compatible without implementation work.
- Implement and verify the subsystem. Integration still requires the blocks to be configured and checked together. The protocol standard is an aid to integration, not a substitute for system verification.
- Develop accelerator software. Program control and instructions direct the accelerator’s functional units, within the capabilities designed into the hardware.
Thus OCP and programmability address different design concerns: OCP concerns how IP blocks interface, while programmability concerns how the accelerator’s hardware functions are controlled and adapted.

What performance examples did the 2007 article report?
Nohl’s EE Times article reported the following examples and claims. They are historical figures attributed to that article, not independent measurements or benchmarks established here.
| Figure | Context reported in the article | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 160 MHz | CoWare customer example: a video deblocking-filter accelerator for standard-resolution set-top boxes. | Reported by Nohl in 2007; the passage does not provide a benchmark methodology. |
| 200 MHz | CoWare design example: a deblocking-filter accelerator for full-HD resolution and frame rate, described as reusable for VC-1 and H.264. | Reported by Nohl in 2007; not a current product specification. |
| 16 × 16 × 8 bits (2,048-bit datapath) | Illustrative wide datapath for processing a block of pixels. | An example in the article, not a general requirement for video codecs. |
| Up to three orders of magnitude | Claimed codec acceleration relative to a pure-software solution. | The passage reviewed does not state the baseline processor, workload, test method, or reproducibility. |
These examples show the article’s intended trade-off between parallel hardware and software control. The claimed speedup should be read as an article-reported result, not as a generally verified performance figure for contemporary SoCs.

How to read this design idea on later platforms
Later vendor platforms can illustrate how codec IP is integrated into SoCs, but they should not be treated as evidence that those products use Nohl’s exact programmable-accelerator architecture or OCP configuration. The 2007 article is most useful as a design argument: standard interfaces can support architectural exploration, while programmable control can preserve some adaptability in otherwise specialized codec hardware.
