Among codecs those paths support, weigh visual quality at your target bitrate against encoder and decoder load, latency, container and protocol compatibility, and licensing. There is no single best codec for every stream.
What a video codec does
A codec is the algorithm that encodes video for delivery and decodes it for playback. Compression reduces the amount of data needed to represent video, but the balance among data size, visual quality, and processing demands depends on the source, settings, encoder, and playback environment.
A codec is not the same thing as a container or a streaming protocol. The codec describes how the video is compressed; a container packages media tracks and metadata, while a protocol and delivery platform determine how a stream is carried. A compatible codec alone does not guarantee that a particular platform will accept a live feed.
Check compatibility before comparing efficiency
Start with the actual end-to-end path: the encoder’s output, the platform’s ingest, and playback on the devices and applications your audience uses. Confirm the accepted codec, profile, level, container, and protocol for that workflow. Requirements can vary by platform and implementation, so do not infer ingest support from browser support.

For browser WebRTC, MDN identifies VP8 and H.264 Constrained Baseline as required video codec options; support for additional codecs varies by browser and implementation. This is useful context for browser-based real-time media, not proof that a separate live-streaming service accepts either codec for ingest.
Compare the main codec options
| Codec | What the cited web-media guidance says | What to verify for live streaming |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 / AVC | MDN describes it as broadly compatible in web contexts and identifies Constrained Baseline as a mandatory WebRTC video profile. It also flags licensing considerations. | Confirm the required profile and level, ingest and playback support, and licensing implications for your implementation. |
| VP8 | MDN identifies it as a required WebRTC baseline codec and describes it as free of licensing requirements. | Check the target platform, protocol, container, and playback devices. WebRTC support does not establish suitability for a separate live workflow. |
| VP9 | MDN describes it as open and royalty-free, with broad browser support. | Verify support across the actual ingest, container, protocol, and audience devices; browser support by itself is not enough. |
| AV1 | MDN describes AV1 as royalty-free and says its compression rates are higher than VP9 and HEVC, and as much as 50% higher than AVC. That is a general statement in MDN’s guide, not a live-stream benchmark or guaranteed bitrate reduction. | Check encoder and decoder capability, platform and device support, processing cost, and whether the workflow can meet its latency needs. |
| HEVC / H.265 | MDN describes it as designed for efficient encoding and decoding, including at high resolutions. Browser and WebRTC support varies, and licensing considerations apply. | Confirm audience and platform support as well as licensing for the specific implementation and use. |
Choose for the whole workflow
1. Write down the compatibility requirements
List the platform’s current live-ingest requirements and the playback environments that matter: browsers, mobile devices, desktop applications, or dedicated players. Record codec, profile, level, container, and protocol constraints. If a platform does not publish a detail you need, treat it as unverified and test the exact workflow rather than assuming compatibility.

2. Set the quality and latency target
Decide what visual quality is acceptable at the bitrate available to your stream, and how much delay the use case can tolerate. Compression efficiency matters only if the encoder can produce the stream in real time and the delivery path can carry it without violating latency needs. The available references do not establish measured latency rankings among these codecs, so compare them in your own supported workflow rather than relying on a universal speed order.
3. Check encoder and viewer hardware
Find out whether your encoder can produce the chosen codec at the required resolution and frame rate, and whether your expected viewers can decode it. Hardware acceleration may affect practical encoding and decoding load. A codec with attractive compression characteristics is not a useful choice if the encoder cannot keep up or important viewers cannot play it.

4. Confirm the container and protocol pairing
Check the complete media format, not just the codec name. MDN identifies MP4 as a standard container for H.264 and describes WebM as a more reliable pairing for VP9 and AV1 than partial MP4 support in some environments. These are web-media compatibility notes, not a substitute for the target platform’s current ingest specifications.
5. Review licensing for the real deployment
Licensing can depend on the codec, implementation, and use. MDN describes VP8 as royalty-free and flags licensing considerations for AVC/H.264 and HEVC/H.265. Its WebRTC guidance states: “Of the two mandatory codecs for video—VP8 and AVC/H.264—only VP8 is completely free of licensing requirements.” Treat that as MDN’s description, not legal advice or a determination for your specific commercial use. Confirm current obligations for the implementation you plan to deploy.

6. Test the complete path
- Encode representative content using the intended resolution, frame rate, profile, level, and bitrate.
- Send it through the actual live-ingest path; a local playback test or WebRTC compatibility result does not prove platform ingest compatibility.
- Check playback on the browsers and devices that matter, including whether decoding remains smooth at the selected settings.
- Assess visual quality, encoder load, and end-to-end delay under realistic conditions.
- Keep a compatible fallback available if the platform or audience devices cannot use your preferred codec.
How to think about AV1’s compression advantage
MDN’s web video codec guide says AV1 achieves higher data compression rates than VP9 and HEVC, and as much as 50% higher rates than AVC. Read that as a general codec comparison from the guide, not a promise that a particular live stream can cut bitrate by that amount without quality loss. Source material, encoder settings, hardware, platform support, and latency requirements all affect the practical result.
AV1 can be worth evaluating when the relevant encoders, ingest path, and viewers support it. Its compression advantage does not automatically mean lower total live-stream costs or better results: encoding cost, hardware capability, support, and latency also matter.

When a cloud loop is part of the plan
If your use case is an always-on YouTube stream made from uploaded recordings, codec choice still matters for the compatibility and quality of those files. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos; it plays uploads as made, with no re-encode, up to 4K 60fps. That describes the service’s handling of uploaded videos, not a claim about support for every codec or a substitute for checking your file and platform requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans, then start your free day.
