Check current platform guidance before recording or exporting.
What is a video aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio is the proportion of a video’s width to its height: it describes the shape of the frame, not its image detail. The University of Cambridge’s technical guidance for video content defines it as “the shape of your video – the width compared to the height.”
- 16:9 is wider than it is tall.
- 9:16 is taller than it is wide.
- 1:1 is square.
- 4:5 is a portrait rectangle, taller than square but less tall than 9:16.
Aspect ratio and resolution are different. Resolution gives the frame’s pixel dimensions; aspect ratio gives its proportions. A 1920 × 1080 frame, for example, is 16:9.
Which aspect ratio should you use?
| Ratio | Shape | Good starting point | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16:9 | Landscape | Standard landscape videos, tutorials, presentations, and YouTube computer viewing | YouTube identifies 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for its computer player. Check other platforms and placements before using it there. |
| 9:16 | Portrait | Full-height vertical viewing contexts, such as short-form video feeds | Cambridge lists Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, TikTok, and LinkedIn among vertical-video contexts. Current rules and display can vary by placement. |
| 1:1 | Square | A placement that supports a square frame | It is a common video shape, but the sources do not establish a universal platform preference for it. |
| 4:5 | Portrait | A feed layout where the platform’s current rules support it | It takes more vertical space than square while remaining less tall than 9:16. |
The examples of common shapes come from Cambridge’s video guidance. They are decision aids, not a guarantee that every platform will show a video identically: interface, device, feed placement, and platform updates can change how it appears.

How YouTube handles aspect ratios
YouTube says 16:9 is the standard aspect ratio for its computer player. The player can adapt to an individual video’s dimensions and the viewer’s device; for some combinations, including 9:16 video in computer browsers, YouTube may add padding. Its guidance recommends not adding padding or black bars directly to the file, because doing so can interfere with the player’s dynamic sizing. See YouTube’s video resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.
YouTube lists these example resolutions for 16:9 video:

- 1920 × 1080 for 1080p
- 1280 × 720 for 720p
- 3840 × 2160 for 4K
Those dimensions describe resolution, not separate aspect-ratio choices: each example is 16:9. Check YouTube’s current guidance for your delivery needs rather than treating these examples as a complete specification for every video.
How to choose and prepare the frame
- Identify the destination and placement. Decide whether the video is for a standard landscape player, a vertical short-video feed, or another layout. Do not choose a ratio based only on the platform name; different placements may behave differently.
- Choose the shape that fits the viewing context. Start with 16:9 for conventional landscape viewing or 9:16 for portrait-first viewing. Consider 1:1 or 4:5 when the specific placement makes those shapes appropriate.
- Check the platform’s current specifications. Do this before recording or exporting, particularly if you plan to publish on multiple platforms. Platform guidance and presentation can change.
- Keep essential content in the intended frame. Plan for the crop when framing people, action, and on-screen text. There is no universal crop-safe margin established by the sources here; use the target platform’s guidance and preview the result.
- Create deliberate versions when repurposing. Reframe and export a separate version for a different shape where needed. An automatic conversion may crop or reposition important content unexpectedly.
- For YouTube, avoid baking in bars or padding. Export the frame without added black bars so the player can adapt to its dimensions.
Common aspect-ratio mistakes
- Confusing shape with detail: changing the aspect ratio does not by itself increase resolution or image detail.
- Stretching a frame to force a fit: changing proportions can distort the image. Reframe or crop deliberately instead.
- Assuming one export fits every placement: a crop that works in a landscape player may remove important content in a portrait feed.
- Adding bars to a YouTube file to force a shape: YouTube advises against embedded padding or black bars because they may interfere with dynamic player sizing.
- Treating a common ratio as a platform guarantee: check current official guidance for the exact placement and preview how the upload appears.
Does aspect ratio matter for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
The frame shape still affects how the video is presented; continuous playback does not make a landscape or portrait ratio universally right. Pick and prepare the ratio for the intended viewing context, and keep YouTube’s player behavior in mind.
