A vibe-coded demo can show that an idea is runnable; it cannot, by itself, show that the software is ready for real users. The Topgolf-versus-Torrey Pines analogy captures the gap: vibe coding can make a first version feel accessible and rewarding, while production software demands sustained attention to correctness, security, failure, change, and maintenance. The analogy is a way to frame the difference—not a measure of software quality.
What the golf analogy means
At Topgolf, a guided setup and immediate feedback make it easy to take a swing and see what happens. Vibe coding can create a similar loop: describe an idea in natural language, let an AI coding tool generate or change code, run the result, then refine it with another prompt.

That loop is useful for exploring an idea and making it visible quickly. Torrey Pines stands for a different undertaking: building and operating software that must keep working for its users under real conditions. Production brings questions a short demonstration may not answer: What happens with unexpected input? Can the system be changed safely? Is sensitive data protected? Who responds when the service fails?

What vibe coding does—and does not—tell you
A recent research review describes vibe coding as AI-assisted development in which a developer states intent in natural language and evaluates generated code by running it rather than reading it. The review presents a synthesis, not a universal finding about every tool, developer, or project. It notes that results vary by task and measurement, and describes uneven capabilities, including stronger code generation than fault detection and documentation auditability. Read the review.
In practical terms, a working result is evidence that some behavior ran in the conditions you tried. It is not proof that the implementation is secure, correct across relevant cases, reliable under expected conditions, or understandable enough to maintain. A convincing happy path can coexist with defects outside the path you demonstrated.
Vibe coding is a way to produce or change software, not a readiness certification. Human accountability remains necessary, with review and testing scaled to the consequences of failure.

Can vibe coding produce production-grade software?
It can be part of the process, but production readiness depends on the application, its users and data, and what happens if it fails. Thoughtworks says that “production-grade is not a universally defined term.” Its System Update Planner experiments illustrate why context matters: one freeform experiment focused on functionality while specifying little about structure; other experiments deliberately prescribed design heuristics, modularity, and testability and used continuous feedback. These practitioner experiments are illustrative, not statistical evidence about all AI-generated software. Thoughtworks’ account.
Google Cloud describes an application lifecycle that includes ideation, generation, iterative refinement, human testing and validation for security, quality, and correctness, and deployment. Its guide says, “Testing and validation: A human expert reviews the application for security, quality, and correctness.” Google Cloud also uses the phrase “vibe deploying” for launching to a live, production-grade environment with a click or prompt. That describes a deployment option; the convenience of launching does not establish that a particular application is suitable for production. Google Cloud’s application lifecycle guide.
So the useful distinction is not “AI-built” versus “production.” It is whether the work has been reviewed, tested, secured, deployed, and prepared for ongoing operation to a level appropriate for the service.

Prototype loop versus production service
| Prototype loop | Production service |
|---|---|
| Make an idea visible and runnable quickly. | Define acceptable behavior, risk, and service expectations for real users. |
| Use prompt changes and a successful demonstration as immediate feedback. | Use tests, review, deployment controls, monitoring, incidents, and user outcomes as feedback. |
| A narrow happy path may be enough to communicate the idea. | Consider relevant edge cases, misuse, failures, security, and operating conditions. |
| The creator may be the only person who understands the experiment. | An accountable team needs to be able to change and support the system over time. |
This is a practical comparison, not a formal standard. The relevant bar depends on what the software does and the consequences of getting it wrong.
What to establish before real users depend on it
Use the following as a risk-aware readiness discussion, not as a universal guarantee or certification:
- Define the service. State what the application is meant to do, who will use it, what data it handles, and which outcomes matter. Identify what failure would mean for those users.
- Review the implementation and dependencies. Have a qualified person inspect generated code and the components it relies on, paying particular attention to security-sensitive behavior. A successful run is not a substitute for this review.
- Test beyond the demonstration. Check expected behavior as well as relevant edge cases and failure conditions. Choose testing depth and checks in proportion to the system’s risk.
- Plan release and recovery. Decide how changes reach users and how to roll back a release if it causes problems.
- Assign ongoing ownership. Identify who monitors the service, responds to problems, maintains it, and makes decisions about future changes.
Google’s Site Reliability Engineering materials describe work across the software lifecycle, including building, deploying, monitoring, and maintaining systems. When vibe coding is a good fit
Vibe coding can be valuable when the goal is exploration: testing an idea, producing a prototype, or making a concept concrete enough to discuss. Its fast feedback loop can help expose what a user actually wants before a team invests in a more durable implementation.
The mistake is treating a persuasive first version as evidence that production engineering is finished. Once people, sensitive data, or consequential decisions depend on the software, the team must establish the behavior it needs, validate the implementation, and take responsibility for operating it. The method that produced the first version does not remove those obligations.

Is vibe coding safe for production?
There is no single yes-or-no answer based only on the label “vibe coding.” Safety depends on the application’s risks and whether its implementation has received appropriate human review, testing, security attention, and operational preparation. A demo alone cannot establish those things.
No verified general failure rate or universal production-readiness statistic is available to settle the question. A recent review discusses conflicting productivity findings and emphasizes differences in task, measurement, and time horizon; those findings should not be mistaken for a general measure of production safety. The review’s discussion of evidence.
