Vibe coding changes software development from writing and reading every line by hand to expressing intent, giving an AI coding system the right context, running its output, observing what happens, and refining the result. It can make prototypes dramatically faster, but it does not remove engineering work. Specification, testing, security review, maintainability, and accountability become more important.

What “vibe coding” means

The term was introduced in February 2025 and is widely attributed to Andrej Karpathy. In its strictest sense, vibe coding means prompting a large language model to create software, trying the result, and requesting changes without reading the generated code closely. In everyday use, people also use the phrase for a broader conversational workflow in which AI writes much of the implementation while a person guides and evaluates it.

The practical loop is:

  1. Describe a user problem, desired behavior, constraints, and technical context.
  2. Ask the AI to make a small change or build a narrow prototype.
  3. Run the result and observe the actual application, not just the model’s explanation.
  4. Report failures or new requirements and iterate.
  5. Inspect, test, refactor, document, or replace the generated code as the software’s risk increases.

That loop is conversational, but it is still development. The important change is where human attention goes.

How the development process changed

From syntax to intent and specification

Developers spend less time initially translating an idea into language syntax and more time stating the goal precisely. A useful request includes the user problem, acceptance criteria, constraints, data boundaries, error behavior, and the relevant framework or runtime. Vague prompts tend to produce plausible but mismatched implementations; precise specifications reduce correction cycles.

From long implementation phases to short goal-satisfaction cycles

Microsoft Research’s PPIG 2025 study, described as the first empirical study of vibe coding, analyzed more than eight hours of curated video from extended sessions. It observed repeated cycles of prompting, rapidly scanning generated output, testing the application, and manually editing when necessary. Debugging remained hybrid: participants combined AI suggestions with familiar manual debugging practices.

From code production to context management and evaluation

The human contribution shifts toward supplying files, interfaces, examples, constraints, and domain rules; deciding what the model should and should not change; and judging whether the result is correct. Expertise is redistributed rather than eliminated. A person must still recognize a wrong assumption, an unsafe dependency, an incomplete edge case, or a design that will be expensive to maintain.

From expensive experiments to cheap prototypes

Google Cloud and IBM identify rapid prototyping, problem-first work, and inexpensive experimentation as the clearest benefits. A team can test an interaction, internal tool, data transformation, or proof of concept before committing to a full architecture. The speed advantage is greatest when the audience is small, the data is non-sensitive, and the software can be discarded.

Vibe coding versus AI-assisted development

“AI-assisted coding” is the broad category: it includes autocomplete, code explanation, test generation, refactoring suggestions, and conversational development. Vibe coding is the more aggressive, generation-led end of that spectrum. The distinction is not whether AI wrote code; it is whether the person verifies and owns the result.

Dimension Conventional coding Responsible AI-assisted development Pure vibe coding
Who writes implementation Primarily a developer Developer and AI collaborate AI generates most implementation from prompts
Code inspection Routine and detailed Focused on generated and critical paths May be minimal or absent
Testing and verification Planned tests, review, and execution Automated and manual tests plus review Often limited to whether the visible result “works”
Maintainability and security Explicit engineering requirements Reviewed against the project’s requirements Frequently deferred or overlooked
Best-fit audience and lifespan Shared, long-lived, or business-critical systems Projects of any size with appropriate controls Disposable or tightly bounded software
Iteration speed Slower initial implementation, predictable control Fast for routine and exploratory work Very fast early iterations
Final risk owner Human engineering team Human engineering team Still the human or organization, despite limited inspection

Google Cloud draws the same practical line: responsible development requires reviewing, testing, understanding, and owning the code, while “pure” vibe coding may accept output without inspection.

What studies and practitioners found

Observed behavior is iterative, not hands-off

The Microsoft PPIG 2025 observations show that people do not simply issue one prompt and ship. They alternate between AI-driven and manual manipulation, using application behavior to decide what to ask for next. Trust develops through repeated verification rather than blanket acceptance.

Trust determines delegation

A separate Microsoft Research qualitative study examined more than 190,000 words from interviews, Reddit discussions, and LinkedIn posts. It found that trust affects whether people delegate a task to AI or work with it interactively. Recurring pain points included specification, reliability, debugging, latency, code-review burden, and collaboration.

Professional responsibility remains human

An Associated Press report quoted Cat Wu, a project manager for Anthropic’s Claude Code, describing the shift as moving away from “the nitty-gritty syntax” toward communicating a higher-level goal. Wu also emphasized that responsibility remains with engineers. Generated code does not transfer legal, operational, or security accountability to the model.

Adoption figures need context

The Associated Press reported that Windsurf had 200,000 users in its first two months. That is a company figure reported by AP, not an independently audited measure of industry-wide adoption.

Can nonprogrammers build software with AI?

Yes, for bounded goals. A nonprogrammer can often create a small website, an internal form, a data-cleaning script, or a prototype by describing the desired behavior and testing each iteration. Multimodal tools can also accept screenshots or other reference material, lowering the barrier to expressing an interface.

Building something that runs is not the same as building something dependable. Nonprogrammers still need to:

  • define what “correct” means, including failure and edge cases;
  • protect credentials, personal data, and other sensitive inputs;
  • test with representative and adversarial examples;
  • keep track of dependencies, hosting, backups, and access controls;
  • obtain qualified review before exposing the system to many users or important decisions.

AI can reduce the amount of syntax a person must learn. It cannot supply missing domain knowledge, risk tolerance, or ownership.

Risks of vibe-coded applications

Correctness and reliability

Generated software can satisfy the happy path while mishandling invalid input, concurrency, permissions, time zones, partial failures, or data loss. A successful demonstration is evidence that one scenario worked, not proof that the system is correct.

Security and privacy

Unreviewed output may contain insecure authentication, excessive permissions, unsafe file handling, injection vulnerabilities, exposed secrets, or dependencies with known defects. Prompts and uploaded context can also reveal proprietary or personal information if the tool’s data-handling terms and configuration are not understood.

Maintainability and technical debt

Repeated patches can produce duplicated logic, inconsistent patterns, unclear ownership, and dependencies nobody has evaluated. Martin Fowler’s May 21, 2026 analysis warns that code produced without inspection often has maintainability, correctness, and security problems. The cost appears later, when another person must change or operate it.

Debugging, review, and collaboration overhead

AI-generated code can be quick to create but slow to diagnose. A reviewer who did not participate in the prompts may have to reconstruct the model’s assumptions. Teams can also disagree about which prompt produced a behavior, what context was supplied, or who is responsible for fixing it.

A responsible AI coding workflow

1. Write the contract before the prompt

State the user problem, inputs and outputs, acceptance criteria, nonfunctional requirements, data boundaries, supported environments, and explicit exclusions. Ask the AI to list assumptions and unresolved questions before it writes code.

2. Request a small, reviewable change

Start with one feature or a thin prototype. Ask for a plan, affected files, tests, and rollback considerations. Small changes make incorrect assumptions easier to locate.

3. Execute the result

Run the application, test command, or script in an isolated environment. Check the actual behavior rather than relying on the model’s claim that the code should work.

4. Test beyond the happy path

Exercise normal, boundary, invalid, failure, permission, and security cases. Inspect authentication, authorization, input handling, data access, external calls, and dependency changes. Add automated tests for behavior that must not regress.

5. Decide whether to keep, refactor, or replace

When the output works, make its assumptions understandable: simplify confusing code, remove unused packages, document interfaces, and record operational requirements. If the design is fundamentally wrong, replacing it with conventional implementation is safer than endlessly prompting patches.

When to move from vibe coding to conventional engineering

Switch methods when the software becomes shared, sensitive, long-lived, revenue-generating, or difficult to explain. A handoff is also warranted when failures are costly, performance is constrained, regulatory evidence is required, or no one on the team can review the critical paths.

Before release, establish a named owner and confirm that the project has version control, reproducible builds, tests, dependency and license review, secret management, access controls, logging, backups, monitoring, and a rollback plan. These controls matter regardless of whether a human or an AI typed the first draft.

Tools commonly used for this workflow

IBM’s explainer lists Replit, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, and Bolt as examples of current AI coding platforms. Their interfaces differ, but the process principles are the same: provide bounded context, generate a change, run it, inspect the result, and retain human ownership. Tool choice does not by itself make an unverified workflow safe.

Bottom line

Vibe coding changed development by making natural-language intent, rapid execution, and continuous feedback the center of early implementation. Its strongest advantage is fast experimentation; its defining risk is accepting software that nobody understands. Use the method freely for disposable, low-risk prototypes, and apply progressively stronger review, testing, security, and operational engineering as the software gains users, data, and consequences.
