YouTube portrait live streams can appear full-screen in the app’s vertical live feed, including while viewers browse Shorts; this is a discovery surface, not a guarantee of views. If you want to reach both phone-first and widescreen audiences, YouTube’s Live Control Room supports dual streaming: one shared URL and chat serve horizontal and vertical versions. Choose a workflow, check eligibility, and test framing, upload capacity, and audio before going live.
How viewers find and watch portrait live streams
In the YouTube app, viewers can watch vertical live streams full-screen, chat or react when chat is enabled, and swipe to other vertical lives. They may encounter the vertical live feed while browsing live streams or Shorts; YouTube also describes a Live button on paused Shorts as another entry point. The vertical live feed is currently unavailable on tablets.
People who are not subscribed may discover vertical lives while browsing Shorts, but that does not promise impressions or audience growth. Scheduled live streams and Premieres do not appear in the vertical live feed.
Choose portrait-only or dual streaming
A portrait-first stream can suit a person speaking to camera or a close-up demonstration. If you also want to serve viewers watching on wider screens, consider YouTube’s dual-stream option instead of assuming one orientation fits everyone.

Live Control Room dual streaming provides 16:9 and 9:16 versions by default. The vertical layout can be set to Center crop, Fit to phone width, or Stacked; creators can zoom and reposition it. Configure the vertical format before starting: YouTube says it cannot be added after the stream has begun, though an edited layout can be adjusted while live.
For encoder-based dual streaming, YouTube’s instructions say to select RTMP(S), choose Encoder in the vertical preview, use the second stream key for vertical, and send the right format to each key. Dual streaming can be switched off in Live Control Room stream settings.

Pick the streaming method that fits your production
- Mobile: Useful for vlogging and quick updates from a phone or tablet. Check the separate mobile eligibility requirements first.
- Webcam: A straightforward way to go live from a computer with a webcam.
- Encoder: Useful for gameplay, overlays, and additional production hardware such as cameras or microphones.
YouTube says creators do not need expensive equipment to start. Use gear you already have; a phone support or external microphone may be useful additions, but they are not platform requirements.
Check eligibility before planning a phone live
YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16. Direct mobile streaming has additional stated requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming enabled, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube Studio or current Help guidance for your channel and location before relying on a phone workflow.

Set up and test an encoder stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, constant bitrate, AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

These are YouTube’s recommended examples, not a reason to use a rate your connection cannot sustain. Test upload speed rather than relying on download speed. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload capacity beyond the total bitrate; if using a backup stream, allow for primary plus backup plus that headroom.

- Set the stream format and vertical layout before going live, especially if using dual streaming.
- Measure upload speed and choose a bitrate your connection can sustain with the recommended headroom.
- For a scheduled encoder event, set it up at least two hours ahead and start the encoder at least 15 minutes early, as YouTube advises.
- Check Live Control Room preview and playback on a phone; monitor audio and video quality. If using a backup encoder, test failover.
Understand the vertical-feed tradeoffs
YouTube documents differences between the vertical live feed and horizontal live streams. The vertical feed supports discovery in Shorts, scrolling to more lives, memberships, and gifted memberships. Compared with horizontal streams, it does not support clickable links in chat and channel descriptions, live ad pre-rolls or mid-rolls, 4K bitrate streaming in the YouTube app, Premieres, or Live Redirect. Fan-funding feature availability depends on eligibility.
If viewers need to click links you share in chat, or a Premiere, Live Redirect, or 4K app playback is central to your plan, weigh those needs against the vertical viewing experience. YouTube’s feature guidance does not establish that portrait format earns more reach, engagement, or revenue.

How do I live stream vertically on YouTube?
Choose a mobile, webcam, or encoder workflow. In Live Control Room, set the vertical format and layout before starting; if you use an encoder, follow YouTube’s current stream-key and format instructions. Preview the stream and check phone playback before sharing it.
Can I stream vertical and horizontal on YouTube at the same time?
