A Venmo account recovery payment is repayment for a failed payment that caused Venmo to freeze your account. It is not a separate fee to restore access or a payment to an outside recovery service. If this is your situation, use Venmo’s in-app Restore your account prompts or visit venmo.com/recover in a computer browser.
How to make a Venmo recovery payment
- Open the recovery flow. In the Venmo app, follow the Restore your account prompts. Alternatively, open venmo.com/recover in a computer browser.
- Choose a funding method and amount. Venmo says paying by debit card is the fastest option. If you cannot pay the full amount at once, edit the repayment amount before selecting Pay to make a partial payment.
- Wait for processing to finish. Venmo says a bank-funded recovery payment may take up to five business days to process. Your account remains frozen until recovery is complete; Venmo says it will email you when the account is unfrozen.
Payments received into your Venmo account are automatically applied to the amount you owe. Check your account’s recovery flow for the balance and available payment options.

First identify which account problem you have
“Account recovery” can refer to different problems. Paying a failed-payment balance is not the same as proving your identity to sign in or reporting unauthorized activity.

| Your account is frozen after a payment failed | Use Restore your account in the app or visit venmo.com/recover in a computer browser to repay the amount owed. |
| You cannot receive a login verification code on a new device | On the login screen, try Other options or I don’t have access to this phone. If those alternatives are unavailable, contact Venmo Support. |
| You see an unauthorized transaction, transfer, or account change | Contact Venmo as soon as possible. Be ready to provide the transaction date and amount and, when relevant, the username paid. |
Protect your account during recovery
- Venmo’s security guidance says: “Nobody at Venmo will ever contact you to request a password or verification code for your account.” Do not share either with someone claiming to help recover your account.
- Venmo says it requests identity documents through forms in the app, in-app chat, or its secure upload form linked from a help.venmo.com page—not by asking you to send them directly by text or email.
- If a stranger sends you an unexpected payment, do not return the money yourself or move it. Contact Venmo Support. If you receive a payment-notification email but cannot find the corresponding payment request in the app or on Venmo’s website, treat the email as potentially fraudulent.
Contact Venmo Support
Venmo’s Contact Us page lists general support by phone at (855) 812-4430, daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central Time. It also lists in-app messaging through Get Help > Chat With Us, with a stated availability window of 8 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. Central Time. Support channels and hours can change, so check the Venmo Contact Us page for current details.
