What VBX is—and how it works
VBX is written in Go. Its documented toolchain takes Basic-like .vbx source, parses it and performs type inference, emits standard C99, then uses GCC or Clang to compile that C with -O2. In other words, Go is used to build and run the VBX compiler; a C compiler is still needed to produce a program from VBX source.
The project describes its output as a standalone native binary that can be distributed without a separate VBX runtime. “Zero dependency,” native-speed, and cross-platform descriptions are project claims, not independently verified results. The available materials do not provide benchmark results or establish that builds succeed on every operating system or target.

These examples indicate the documented surface, not a guarantee of complete VB6 language or library coverage. The available sources do not establish that VBX can import an existing VB6 project or reproduce its controls, APIs, or runtime behavior.
What you need to build and use it
According to the project README, building the VBX compiler requires Go 1.20 or newer. Compiling VBX programs also requires a C compiler, such as GCC or Clang, available on the system path. The README documents command-line use, so the practical starting point is a terminal workflow rather than assuming a graphical IDE.

Although the project describes cross-platform goals, the consulted materials do not confirm successful builds for every operating system, processor architecture, or 64-bit target. Check the current project instructions and verify your intended target with a small build before relying on it for deployment.
Compiler status and editor support
The creator describes the compiler as version 0.1.0-alpha. That is an early-stage designation, so readers should expect an evolving feature set and should assess whether the current implementation meets their needs rather than treating VBX as a mature replacement for established VB6 tooling.

The creator names VS Code, JetBrains products, Sublime Text, Notepad++, Vim, Neovim, Emacs, and Micro as supported editors. That list does not mean each editor has the same integration. The VS Code Marketplace listing specifically describes syntax highlighting and snippets; it does not establish that the extension provides a complete IDE.
VBX Studio is a separate visual IDE effort. The creator describes its form designer and other workflow features as in development, not as generally released or independently tested capabilities.

What “successor to VB6” means here
“Successor” is best understood as an expression of inspiration and direction: VBX seeks to offer a modern compiled Basic-style workflow with some familiar elements. It should not be read as a claim that VB6 applications can be opened and compiled unchanged. The available documentation does not establish source, project, control, API, or runtime compatibility.
Anyone evaluating it for an existing application should first identify the specific language features, libraries, UI components, and deployment behavior that application depends on, then verify each against VBX itself. A shared Basic-like feel is not enough to establish compatibility.

License and distribution
The compiler repository describes its license as GPLv3 with a Runtime Library Exception and says that programs built with the compiler are not subject to the GPL under that exception. That is the project’s interpretation; anyone distributing software should read the actual license file and consider their own legal obligations rather than treating this summary as legal advice.
Who should consider trying VBX?
VBX may interest programmers who want to explore an early Basic-like language, inspect a Go-based compiler that emits C99, or experiment with a command-line route to compiled executables. It is a less certain fit when the requirement is to migrate a working VB6 application, depend on a released visual form designer, or rely on proven compatibility and deployment across specified platforms. The project materials describe the intended direction, but do not supply independent testing or benchmarks to settle those questions.
