Vast’s plan is technically plausible, but the available evidence does not show that Haven-2 is funded, selected by NASA, certified, or on track to replace the International Space Station. NASA’s July 2026 draft procurement direction gives commercial stations a path toward development, certification, and service contracts; it is not an award to Vast. Meanwhile, NASA has not yet established whether a gap in U.S. human presence in low Earth orbit can be avoided if the ISS retires on its planned schedule.

The key distinction is between a promising station program and a dependable ISS successor. Haven-1 is Vast’s smaller pathfinder. Haven-2 is the proposed multi-module destination that would need to meet NASA’s requirements, win a procurement, secure customers and financing, and be ready when the agency makes its ISS retirement decision.

What would it mean for Vast to replace the ISS?

“Replace the ISS” does not necessarily mean building one station that duplicates every ISS capability. NASA’s stated objective is to transition toward a commercial marketplace for low-Earth-orbit destinations, transportation, and related services, with NASA as one customer. The agency may rely on one or more commercial stations rather than a single winner-take-all successor.

NASA says it plans to operate the ISS through 2030. That is a planning horizon, not a guarantee that retirement will occur on that date or that a replacement will be ready. The agency cites the station’s limited structural lifetime, affected by dynamic loading and orbital thermal cycling, and plans a controlled deorbit at the end of its service.

For Vast, the relevant test is therefore not simply whether it can build a pressurized module. Haven-2 would have to provide reliable crewed research and logistics services, satisfy NASA safety and certification requirements, and be ready within the broader transition window. Other customers and transportation providers would also matter to the viability of a commercial station.

Where Haven-1 ends and Haven-2 begins

Haven-1 is a pathfinder, not the proposed replacement

In a February 6, 2025 company update, Vast said a Haven-1 qualification structure had passed pressure and leak checks. The company reported a 1.8 barD (26 psig) proof test lasting five hours, followed by a 48-hour leak-rate observation. These are company-reported results for a qualification article; they do not establish that an operational station has flown, hosted a crew, or received NASA safety certification.

That work is still relevant: testing a pressure-bearing structure can demonstrate progress on a difficult part of station development. But it is an early step in a much longer chain involving flight hardware, integrated systems, launch, operations, and certification.

Haven-2 is the larger, unproven commitment

Vast has described Haven-2 as its proposed successor-class station. In February 2025, the company said its first module might be ready to host crew as early as the end of 2028 if Vast were selected by mid-2026. That was a conditional company forecast, not an independently validated schedule. The sources available here do not establish that the selection condition was met or that the forecast remains current.

A first module ready to host crew would also not, by itself, prove that a complete commercial service is ready to replace the ISS. NASA would need evidence that the design and operating system meet its requirements, while customers would need dependable access to transportation, supplies, crew support, and research capabilities.

What NASA has—and has not—decided

NASA’s July 6, 2026 update said it had released a draft request for proposals for industry feedback. The draft described possible firm-fixed-price, multiple-award indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contracts covering development, certification, and services. It contemplated support for multiple contractors in early development, followed by a later competitive task order for final design, testing, evaluation, certification, and services.

This is a procurement direction, not a completed competition. It does not establish that Vast has received a contract, that NASA has selected Haven-2, or that NASA has committed to buy services from it. The structure described in a draft can also change before a final solicitation or award.

The timeline has been shifting. A NASA commercial-stations overview updated in August 2025 described an earlier phase structure with a three-year base period and optional milestones extending up to five years. NASA’s later July 2026 draft-RFP update describes a possible subsequent route; the older phase description should not be treated as a definitive account of the current procurement mechanics.

In May 2026, the Government Accountability Office reported that NASA had not finalized its acquisition approach. It said NASA planned one or more Space Act Agreements under the approach then current and was also evaluating a government-owned core module option introduced in March 2026. The July draft update came after that GAO snapshot, so the two accounts describe a process in motion, not a settled station award.

Why the ISS transition still carries a continuity risk

GAO’s May 2026 review identified a major planning gap: NASA had not assessed the likelihood or duration of a possible interruption in human presence in low Earth orbit. GAO recommended that NASA assess the risk and document the factors behind its ISS retirement-readiness decision. NASA officials told GAO that the decision assessment would need to occur in 2027.

That matters to Vast because a station can be technically credible and still arrive too late to preserve continuity. The timing depends on more than a module’s build schedule: NASA has to decide what it will buy and when, commercial operators must complete development and certification, and launch and crew logistics must be available. A slip in any of these areas could leave NASA weighing an ISS extension, a period without a replacement destination, or another transition option.

NASA’s 2030 operating horizon should therefore be read alongside its readiness decision, not as proof that the ISS will retire on schedule or that a successor will be waiting. NASA’s own transition FAQ says it is working both to use and safely operate the ISS through 2030 and to enable a transition to commercial platforms.

What Vast’s NASA mission proves

On February 12, 2026, NASA announced Vast as the provider selected for the agency’s sixth private astronaut mission to the ISS, targeted no earlier than summer 2027. Vast contracted SpaceX for transportation, will purchase NASA services, and NASA will purchase return capability for cold scientific samples.

This is meaningful evidence that Vast can participate in a commercial mission and work within the ISS ecosystem. It is not a NASA award for Haven-2, a station certification, or proof that Haven-2 can provide continuous ISS-like services. A private astronaut mission is a discrete flight; operating a commercial destination is a broader and longer-term undertaking.

How to judge whether the vision is becoming feasible

Announcements and early hardware tests are useful signals, but the evidence becomes much stronger as the project clears successive gates. Watch for concrete developments in these areas:

  • NASA procurement: a final solicitation, a named selection, funded milestones, and ultimately a service contract. A draft or a general commercial-stations policy is not a station award.
  • Hardware and schedule: flight hardware, integrated system testing, launch, and a crewed demonstration. A qualification article test is not equivalent to an operational station.
  • Safety and certification: documented NASA design acceptance and crew-safety certification. NASA’s program overview describes formal acceptance and certification as part of the path to buying station services.
  • Transportation and operations: a demonstrated plan for crew access, cargo delivery and return, station keeping, life support, and routine operations—not only a way to launch the station.
  • Financing and customers: credible capital to complete development and operate the station, plus demand beyond a single prospective NASA contract. The reviewed sources do not establish Vast’s current committed financing, runway, or independently validated Haven-2 cost and schedule confidence.
  • Transition readiness: evidence that at least one destination can deliver the services NASA needs before the agency decides whether to retire or extend the ISS.

NASA’s commercial-stations materials identify several concepts and partners, including Axiom Space, Blue Origin, Starlab, and Sierra Space. The agency’s stated goal of one or more stations makes a portfolio of providers or architectures possible; it does not imply that Haven-2 must be the sole successor.

Verdict: plausible engineering, unproven replacement plan

Vast has reported tangible Haven-1 structural testing and secured a NASA-selected private astronaut mission, while NASA is developing a procurement route for commercial stations. Those are real signs of progress. They do not yet answer the decisive questions: whether Vast will win a station contract, whether Haven-2 can be completed and certified in time, whether its financing and customer base are adequate, and whether NASA can maintain continuity as the ISS approaches retirement.

So the fairest answer is that Vast’s vision is plausible as a commercial station program, but it is not yet demonstrated as an on-time ISS replacement. The evidence that would change that assessment is not another target date alone; it is a funded NASA path, completed development and certification milestones, credible operations and transportation, and a transition decision grounded in station readiness.
