Variable fonts work across browsers when the font file, its declared axis ranges, and your CSS requests agree. Register the font with @font-face, use standard CSS properties such as font-weight for registered axes, and keep a conventional fallback. Gate enhancements when your target support matrix calls for it, and test the browser and operating-system combinations you actually support.
What a variable font changes
A variable font is still a web font, but a single file can contain a range of design variations—such as weights, widths, or styles—instead of requiring a separate file for every variation. Which axes and values are available depends on the font. MDN describes variable fonts as an evolution of OpenType that allows multiple typeface variations to be incorporated in one file. That flexibility does not mean every font has every axis, or that a browser can render a value the file does not provide. Check the font’s actual axis metadata before writing CSS ranges. A CSS declaration cannot add an axis that is absent from the font.
Register the font and declare its real ranges
Use @font-face to associate the file with a family name and describe the styles and ranges it supports. The following is a pattern, not a set of values to copy blindly: replace the example path and ranges with the values supported by your font.

}The weight and stretch ranges above are illustrative only. Declare font-stretch only if the file supports the corresponding width axis and range. Likewise, declare the styles your font actually provides. MDN documents range descriptors for variable fonts in the font-weight descriptor reference and its @font-face reference.
WOFF2 is generally recommended for web delivery because it compresses more efficiently than older WOFF or OpenType formats. Ensure the URL resolves to the intended file and that the source format declaration matches it. MDN Web Docs: @font-face
Use standard CSS properties for registered axes
Prefer a high-level CSS property when it represents the axis you want to control. This gives the declaration the intended CSS meaning and is easier to maintain than spelling out low-level axis tags.

font-variation-settings is useful for a custom axis or when you need direct control that a standard CSS property does not provide. Axis tags are four-character strings and are case-sensitive. Registered tags are conventionally lowercase and custom tags uppercase, but the font defines the tags it supports.

}Use this kind of declaration only for axes present in the font. When font-variation-settings specifies an axis that also has a corresponding high-level property, the low-level setting can override that property. This can make a later change to font-weight or font-stretch appear ineffective. See MDN’s property reference.

Also check for the font shorthand: it resets font-variation-settings and several other font longhands to normal. If an axis stops taking effect, inspect the cascade and declaration order, especially for a later shorthand. MDN Web Docs: font shorthand
Plan for differences across browsers and operating systems
Do not treat support for one variable-font feature as proof that every related descriptor behaves the same way everywhere. MDN describes the font-variation-settings CSS property as widely available since September 2018, but labels the @font-face variation-settings descriptor as limited availability. Those are distinct capabilities, and operating-system font support and rendering stacks can also affect what users see. MDN Web Docs: font-variation-settings

A fallback family keeps text styled if the web font or an enhancement is unavailable. Where appropriate, feature-query-scope a variable-font-specific enhancement:

}This query is an example of gating an enhancement, not a guarantee that every axis, descriptor, or rendering result is identical across targets. MDN discusses using @supports to scope variable-font styling in its variable fonts guide.
Debug a variable font that appears not to work
- Verify the asset. Confirm the browser loads the intended font file in the network panel and that the console reports no loading or decoding error.
- Check the font’s axes. Confirm the requested axis exists and that the value falls within its actual range. Do not assume a sample range or axis from another font applies.
- Check
@font-facemetadata. Make sure the family name, source URL, intended style, and declared weight or stretch ranges match the file. - Use the matching property. For registered axes, try
font-weight,font-stretch,font-style, orfont-optical-sizingas appropriate before using the low-level property. - Inspect tag spelling and case. If using
font-variation-settings, each axis tag must be the correct four-character, case-sensitive tag. - Trace the cascade. Look for a later
font-variation-settingsvalue overriding the high-level property or afontshorthand resetting variation settings. - Test the target environment. Reproduce the issue in the browser and operating system combination where it occurs; do not infer platform behavior from a different setup.
Validate the result without confusing capture with font support
For visual QA, compare the same page and viewport across your supported browser and operating-system targets, checking the loaded font, requested values, and fallback behavior. A screenshot can make layout and visual differences easier to review, but it does not establish why a difference occurred; inspect font loading and CSS as well.
