A variable aperture changes the lens’s physical opening as a photo is taken; software portrait blur analyzes image data and adds a simulated background blur. The two can create a similar shallow-depth-of-field look, but only the first changes how light enters the camera. Some portrait tools also let you adjust blur or focus after capture, depending on the phone and image.

What a variable aperture changes

An aperture is the physical opening inside a camera lens. Its size is commonly described with an f-number: a smaller number such as f/2 indicates a wider opening than f/5.6, allowing more light through. Apple’s fStop documentation explains this relationship.

A wider opening also contributes to a shallower optical depth of field: the range of distances that appear acceptably sharp. Because the lens forms this blur in the optical image at capture, it is not simply an effect painted onto a finished photo. Aperture is not the only factor in depth of field; focus distance, focal length, sensor format, and the spacing between subject and background also matter.

How software portrait blur works

Portrait mode starts with image data, estimates which areas belong to the subject and background, then applies blur to the background. There is no single pipeline used by every camera or phone.

Pixel 2’s historical example

In a technical explanation published on October 18, 2017, Google Product Manager Isaac Reynolds described the Pixel 2 rear-camera process: it used a segmentation mask to identify the person and a depth map derived from the Dual Pixel sensor data to estimate distances. Reynolds wrote, “Then we blur the image based on the combination of the depth map and the segmentation mask.” That description applies to this Pixel 2 implementation, not necessarily to current phones.

Google said the Pixel 2 selfie camera used segmentation without producing the same kind of depth map as the rear camera. The difference illustrates why “portrait mode” does not describe one universal method. Google also documented an earlier, separate Lens Blur feature that reconstructed depth from multiple views as the user swept the camera upward; it is not a description of current iPhone Portrait mode. See Google Research’s Lens Blur explanation.

How the approaches compare

Question Variable aperture Software portrait blur
What changes? The physical lens opening changes, affecting incoming light and contributing to optical depth of field. Image processing estimates subject/background or scene depth, then simulates blur.
When is the effect made? During capture, as part of forming the optical image. During image processing; some systems also allow adjustments afterward.
Can it affect exposure? Yes. A wider opening admits more light. It adds a rendered effect; it does not physically widen the lens opening.
Can blur or focus be changed later? The aperture choice affects the captured image; it is not a post-capture lens adjustment. Some supported devices preserve controls for changing blur or focus. Availability depends on the phone, software, and image.

This comparison describes mechanisms, not a universal quality ranking. The cited sources do not establish that optical blur always looks more natural, that software always handles edges better, or that all portrait effects are editable.

Can you adjust portrait blur after taking a photo?

Sometimes. Apple’s current iPhone Portrait mode guide documents Depth Control in Camera and Photos for supported models. The exact controls depend on the iPhone and software version, so check the guide and the controls available on your device. A post-capture adjustment changes the rendered portrait effect; it does not alter the lens opening used when the photo was taken.

For historical context, Apple announced Portrait mode on iPhone 7 Plus in 2016 as a dual-camera feature using machine learning. That example shows software effects can draw on multiple camera views, but it should not be treated as a description of every current iPhone.

Which approach suits the shot?

  • Choose physical aperture control when: you need to control how much light enters a camera and want to shape optical depth of field at capture. Confirm that the camera and lens actually provide an adjustable aperture.
  • Choose portrait blur when: you want a convenient simulated portrait effect on a phone, particularly if its supported editing tools let you adjust blur or focus afterward.
  • For either approach: composition and distance matter. Google’s 2017 Pixel article advised keeping people at similar distances from the camera when a group should be sharp, and leaving space between subject and background for separation. It also recommended framing a person’s head or head and shoulders prominently; for close-ups, tap to focus and observe the camera’s minimum focusing distance. These are Pixel 2-era manufacturer tips, not comparative test results.

No cited source provides a controlled side-by-side statistic comparing variable-aperture blur with software portrait blur. The Pixel 2 article’s “close to a million pictures” refers to training data for that historical model, not a measure of blur quality.
