Valve’s three new Steam devices serve different jobs: the Steam Controller is a gamepad, the Steam Machine is a living-room PC, and Steam Frame is a VR headset that can run some games locally or stream PC content. They are no longer just an announcement: reporting through October 2026 says the Controller launched in spring, the Machine in summer, and Frame reservations began in September. Availability, queue timing, and prices vary by region and can change, so check the current Steam listing before planning a purchase.
What Valve announced—and what has changed since
Valve announced the Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame on November 12, 2025, describing them as a family designed to work together while remaining open platforms. The original plan was to begin shipping in early 2026, with launch regions intended to include the US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. That schedule is historical, not a statement of current availability. Later reporting placed the Controller launch in spring 2026 and the Machine launch in summer; Steam Frame preorders opened in September. Valve’s announcement introduced the family concept; dated reporting provides the later timeline.
What is each Steam device?
Steam Controller: a separate gamepad
The Controller is a standalone gamepad in Valve’s hardware family, rather than a console or a PC. The Steam Machine includes a built-in 2.4GHz wireless adapter that can pair with up to four Steam Controllers directly. Reporting describes the Controller as having launched in spring 2026, but the sources available here do not establish its current price or regional stock. Check the local Steam listing for both.
Steam Machine: a compact SteamOS PC for a TV or desk
Steam Machine is a small-form-factor PC designed for living-room use, running SteamOS. Valve’s listed specifications include a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor with 6 cores and 12 threads, semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 graphics with 28 compute units, 16GB DDR5 system memory, 8GB GDDR6 graphics memory, and a 512GB or 2TB NVMe SSD. It also has a microSD slot, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, DisplayPort 1.4, and HDMI 2.0. Valve’s Steam Machine page describes it as a PC on which owners can install their own apps or another operating system; its console-like placement by a TV does not make it a closed console.

Steam Frame: a VR headset with local and streamed play
Steam Frame is a VR headset that can run games optimized for it locally and can also stream PC content. A September 2026 review lists a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16GB LPDDR5X memory, 256GB or 1TB storage, microSD expansion, and LCD displays with 2160 × 2160 resolution per eye. The listed refresh range is 72–120Hz, with 144Hz described as experimental. “Standalone” does not mean every game in the Steam catalog is guaranteed to run natively on the headset. Road to VR’s September report covers reservations and configurations; Tom’s Hardware’s review discusses the device and its use cases.
How to choose between them

For most buyers, start with the use case rather than a headline price: controller, TV-connected PC, or VR. Then consider whether you already have a Steam library and PC, how much storage you need, and whether a local listing or reservation queue is available. Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said the Machine’s value is tied in part to a buyer’s existing Steam library: “I think the value of the Steam Machine is inherently tied to the value of your Steam library in a lot of ways.” The remark appeared in a Tom’s Hardware interview transcript published July 6, 2026. A console-versus-PC price comparison alone therefore misses the value of a library the buyer already owns, as well as the Machine’s operating-system flexibility and general PC use.

Prices, reservations, and availability
Steam Frame
Road to VR reported U.S. prices of $1,059 for the 256GB version and $1,299 for the 1TB version on September 14, 2026. Prices reported for Canada, Europe, the UK, Australia, and Poland differed, with VAT included where applicable. The report described a randomized reservation process: users registered for a model by September 17 at 10 a.m. Pacific, and first purchase emails were expected September 18. Those registration dates have passed; they are not a current way to reserve one. Check the live Steam listing for present availability and regional pricing.
Steam Machine
Tom’s Hardware reported a U.S. starting price of $1,049 for the 512GB model in a July 6, 2026 interview with Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais. On July 29, the outlet reported Valve’s update that everyone in the Machine reservation queue was expected to receive a purchase opportunity by the end of 2026. That was a queue expectation, not a guarantee of a particular delivery date, and progress could vary by product and region. Confirm the latest status on Steam.

Steam Controller and accessories
The sources cited here do not establish the Controller’s exact current price or stock by region. Road to VR listed U.S. Steam Frame accessories in September 2026 at $29 for a power supply, $59 for the Ergonomic Accessories Kit, and $49 for the Accessory Replacement Kit. The first kit included controller hand straps and doors, a headset top strap, and an extended light blocker; the replacement kit included a face gasket, head cushion, and light blocker. Prices and availability can differ by market, so treat those figures as the report’s U.S. listings rather than universal current prices. Steam Frame has a microSD slot, but no particular card is established here as tested or endorsed.

PC Gamer reported on October 2, 2026, that a Steam Frame software update improved power efficiency and battery life by up to 12%, with the result depending on frame rate and content. The report also noted eye-tracking accessibility, controller-binding fixes, improved streaming reliability, and wireless-adapter connectivity fixes. The “up to 12%” figure is Valve’s reported update claim, not a guaranteed runtime increase for every user or game.

What to check before ordering
- Open the Steam hardware listing for your country and confirm the current price, stock, and delivery or reservation status.
- For Steam Frame, choose between 256GB and 1TB storage based on your expected local installs; it also supports microSD expansion.
- For Steam Machine, decide whether you want a living-room PC and whether its SteamOS and other-OS flexibility matters to you.
- For Steam Controller, verify host compatibility and local availability; the Machine’s direct pairing support does not establish that every host works the same way.
- For any accessory, confirm that the named product is available in your region before relying on a reported price.
