The VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) is the full Tier 1 competition system; league play is one regular-season phase within its regional International Leagues. They are not two competing formats at the same level. In 2026, league matches feed regional playoffs and qualification routes to global events. Riot has announced that regular-season league play will be replaced by tournament Cups starting in 2027, so the distinction depends on the season.
VCT vs. league play at a glance
| Question | VCT | League play |
|---|---|---|
| What does it mean? | The wider Tier 1 competition system spanning four territories and regional and international events. | The regular-season phase inside a regional VCT International League. |
| What does it include? | In 2026, Kickoff, Masters Santiago, Stage 1, Masters London, Stage 2 and Champions Shanghai. | In 2026, group matches within Stage 1 or Stage 2; teams then advance, are eliminated or enter Play-Ins, depending on the stage. |
| How does it affect qualification? | The season provides routes to Masters and Champions through regional results, playoffs and Championship Points. | Results determine advancement and contribute to qualification routes; league play is not the whole tour. |
| What changes in 2027? | Riot has announced an all-tournament model for the tour. | Regular-season league play is set to be replaced by Cups. |
These 2026 descriptions follow Riot’s 2026 VALORANT Champions Tour handbook. The 2027 change is an announced plan in Riot’s April 8, 2026 announcement.
How 2026 league play works
Riot’s 2026 handbook describes 48 Tier 1 teams across the Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China. Each territory’s International League has 12 teams. The regular-season structure differs between Stage 1 and Stage 2, and the resulting playoff routes connect regional competition to international events.
Stage 1: group matches lead to playoffs
Each 12-team International League is divided into two groups of six. Teams play a single round robin within their group: five best-of-three matches per team over five weeks. The top four teams in each group qualify for Stage 1 Playoffs; the bottom two are eliminated. Stage 1 match wins award Championship Points, and the top three playoff finishers qualify for Masters London.

Stage 2: direct playoff places and Play-Ins
For Stage 2, the 12 teams are again split into two groups of six, reshuffled from Stage 1. Each team plays five group matches. The top two in each group qualify directly for the eight-team playoffs. The other eight International League teams enter double-elimination Play-Ins alongside the top four Challengers teams. Four teams advance from Play-Ins to join the four direct qualifiers.
The top two Stage 2 playoff teams and the two highest Championship Point earners qualify for Champions Shanghai. This makes league play an important part of the season’s progression, but not a synonym for the complete VCT competition.

What else is part of the VCT season?
The 2026 handbook lists a season that extends beyond regional league matches: regional Kickoff, Masters Santiago, regional Stage 1, Masters London, regional Stage 2 and Champions Shanghai. Masters and Champions are global events; the International League regular seasons are regional phases within that larger calendar.
In practical terms, if someone asks whether a team is “in VCT,” that may mean it competes in the Tier 1 system. Saying the team is playing “league play” is narrower: it refers to regular-season matches in its regional International League.

Where Challengers fits
Challengers is a distinct competition route toward the higher tier, not another name for International League regular-season play. The details vary by region. For example, Riot’s North American Challengers 2026 announcement describes three stages, each with a 16-team Swiss stage followed by top-eight double-elimination playoffs. Swiss matches are best-of-three; lower finals and grand finals are best-of-five. Promotion and relegation occur after Stages 1 and 2, and the announcement describes a route toward VCT Americas Stage 2 through Challengers performance and a regional Last Chance Qualifier.
Those mechanics are specific to the announced North American format; they should not be assumed to apply to every region’s Challengers competition.

What changes in 2027?
Riot announced on April 8, 2026 that the VCT will move to an all-tournament model in 2027. Open qualifiers are planned to feed two Cups per territory each year, eight Cups in total. The Cups are set to replace regular-season league play, end with finals weekends and directly qualify teams to Masters and Champions. Riot describes open qualification routes and a unified system, but says regional calendars, slot allocations and other details will be shared later. These are announced plans, not the 2026 format.
