Java 25 lets a constructor validate its parameters and prepare arguments before an explicit super(...) or this(...) call—without routing that work through a helper method created solely to get around the old ordering rule. The change does not make static factories obsolete: factories still make sense when they control construction or express a separate design choice.
What changed in Java 25 constructor bodies?
Before Java 25, a constructor could not place ordinary statements before an explicit super(...) or this(...) invocation. Java 25 permits a restricted set of statements in that position, called the constructor prologue. Statements after the invocation are the epilogue. The prologue and the arguments to the explicit invocation form an early construction context: the instance being created is not available there.
Oracle’s Java SE 25 language guide describes the rule as allowing statements that do not reference the instance before an explicit constructor invocation. This is not permission to run arbitrary instance behavior before superclass construction.
How do I validate constructor arguments before super()?
Put parameter-only validation in the constructor that owns the invariant, before super(...). Oracle illustrates the pattern with a positive-value subclass of BigInteger:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
public class PositiveBigInteger extends BigInteger {
public PositiveBigInteger(long value) {
if (value <= 0)
throw new IllegalArgumentException("non-positive value");
super(Long.toString(value));
}
}
The check runs before the superclass constructor receives its string argument. If the value is invalid, construction fails with IllegalArgumentException before that superclass constructor is invoked. The example and the language rule are documented in Oracle’s Java SE 25 language guide.
What can go in the constructor prologue?
The prologue is useful for work based on constructor parameters, not on the object under construction. In particular, it can validate arguments or compute values that will be passed to super(...) or this(...).

- Allowed in principle: check a parameter, throw an exception when it violates a rule, or perform a computation using available parameters to prepare a constructor argument.
- Still unavailable: use
this, call an instance method on the new object, or read its fields before the explicit invocation. - Field assignment is not a license to inspect state: Oracle documents assigning fields before
super(...), but current-instance fields still cannot be read in the early construction context. Treat this narrowly; it does not make partially initialized object state generally safe to use.
These boundaries are set out in Oracle’s Java SE 25 language guide. Keep the prologue simple and independent of instance behavior.
When can this replace a static helper or factory?
Use the new syntax when a helper existed only because Java previously required super(...) to appear before validation or superclass-argument preparation. For example, if a factory simply checked a constructor parameter and then invoked a constructor that needed the same parameter for its superclass call, the constructor prologue can make that sequence direct and local.

That is a narrow cleanup, not a general argument against static factories. Oracle’s Secure Coding Guidelines for Java SE recommend static factories when construction should be more carefully controlled than exposed constructors allow. A factory may also select an implementation or serve another deliberate construction policy; the Java 25 feature does not replace those roles.
| Question | Constructor prologue | Static factory |
|---|---|---|
| Is its only job preparing or validating a superclass argument? | Often a direct fit: keep parameter-based work with the constructor that enforces the invariant. | May be unnecessary if it exists only to work around the former statement-order restriction. |
| Must callers be prevented from invoking a public constructor directly? | Does not itself restrict access to construction. | Can help control construction when constructors are not exposed, as Oracle’s secure-coding guidance notes. |
| Does construction need to select an implementation or express other design intent? | Does not replace that separate responsibility. | May remain appropriate for that responsibility. |
| Must the project compile at a language level earlier than Java 25? | The finalized feature is a Java 25 language feature; earlier language levels cannot rely on it. | An older-compatible design may still use a factory or another supported approach. |
Does Java 25 remove other constructor-order hazards?
No. The feature changes where certain statements may appear; it does not eliminate the risks of inheritance or partially initialized objects. Oracle’s Java SE 25 migration guide notes that initializing fields before invoking another constructor can improve reliability when methods are overridden during superclass construction. That is a targeted construction-order benefit, not a general cure for overridable behavior during initialization.

How should I decide which pattern to use?
- Identify the helper’s actual job. If it only validates parameters or computes an argument needed by
super(...), a prologue may make the constructor clearer. - Check ordering needs. If validation must happen before superclass code can run, put suitable parameter-based validation before
super(...). - Check access policy. If callers should not construct the type directly, a factory may still be important.
- Check the language target. Use the feature only when compiling with Java 25 language support; otherwise retain an older-compatible design.
- Keep object state out of early execution. Do not use the prologue to read or act on the instance before constructor delegation.
