Choose Valheim if your group wants a focused Viking survival world built around shared progression, crafting, and base building. Choose No Man’s Sky if you would rather explore a vast galaxy, travel between planets, take missions, and meet up for social activities. Both developers advertise crossplay, but the exact platform and edition matter: the original Nintendo Switch version of No Man’s Sky is single-player, while its Switch 2 edition supports multiplayer.

Valheim is the better fit when your group wants to make one world the center of its co-op sessions. Its Viking setting and survival progression give the group a focused purpose, while crafting and building let players shape their shared home. Pick No Man’s Sky for variety and discovery
No Man’s Sky suits players who want to range across planets and space rather than concentrate on one survival world. Its multiplayer includes exploration, missions, visiting bases, and gathering in the Space Anomaly. Crossplay and platform details to check
Both studios say their games support crossplay: Iron Gate says Valheim supports it between all platforms, and Hello Games says No Man’s Sky players can play together across platforms. Valheim: joining and hosting
For cross-platform Valheim sessions, players can join using a join code. An Xbox console cannot host a dedicated server, though it can join one when crossplay is enabled. No Man’s Sky: original Switch versus Switch 2
The original Nintendo Switch edition launched as a single-player experience, so do not buy it expecting to join friends in multiplayer. The Switch 2 edition adds full multiplayer, crossplay, and cross-save. If someone in your group uses Nintendo hardware, confirm the listing is specifically for Switch 2 before purchasing for co-op.
