The Deep North is Valheim’s final biome in the current progression order, after the Ashlands. It arrived with Valheim 1.0 on September 9, 2026. To make progress there, follow the game’s usual pattern—gather the biome’s resources and defeat its Forsaken boss—then use the reported Hidden Tunnel, Intricate Key, and Morkhalla chain to reach Kall Fimbulbringer.
Where the Deep North fits in Valheim progression
Valheim’s progression is built around biomes: each has its own difficulty and crafting resources, and each is associated with a Forsaken One. Iron Gate describes the general loop as defeating the biome’s boss and using the resulting items and skills to move onward. In the current post-launch progression checklist, the Deep North comes after the Ashlands; it is not presented as a beginner starting zone. See Iron Gate’s FAQ and the post-launch Deep North guide.
Iron Gate’s abbreviated 1.0 patch notes describe the scale of the release: more than 40 weapons, four armor sets, over 10 creatures, more than 30 crafting materials, and over 20 food items, alongside new locations and mechanics. These are developer-published counts, not a gear-ranking guide. The notes are available on the Valheim 1.0 announcement.
How to approach the Deep North as a newcomer
Use biome progression, not a guessed gear threshold
Reach the Deep North after progressing through earlier biomes and the Ashlands. The available guidance does not establish a minimum armor rating, weapon tier, resistance setup, or other exact entry requirement, so treat it as late-game content and prepare using what you have learned from prior biome exploration rather than relying on an unsupported “required gear” list.

Treat the resource list as a checklist
The current guide names these Deep North resources and materials: Timberwood, Timberwood Cone, Snowballs, Ice or Liquid Frost, Petrified Tissue or Bloodgold, Memorial Coal, Embers, Frostfire Essence, Thunderblood Essence, Lingonberries, Oats, Poteitr Seeds, Kale Seeds, Moose Sinew, Moose Meat, Moose Hide, Seal Blubber, Seal Pelt, Elaking Hair Bundle, Long Claws, Frozen Branch, Leather Straps, Nornathread, Dead Pulp, Frostcore, and Larva. The list helps you recognize new finds; it does not establish every recipe, gathering route, or which items to prioritize.
Account for the terrain features Iron Gate previewed
In a March 2026 preview, Iron Gate said lingonberries grow in Deep North woods and are used in food recipes. It also previewed slippery ice and deep snow that must be cleared before building, with a craftable shovel for that job. These details describe specific previewed features, not a complete survival loadout or an exhaustive guide to biome hazards. See Iron Gate’s news archive.

How the Hidden Tunnel and Morkhalla route works
The post-launch guide describes a dungeon chain in village ruins. Use it as a route to investigate, while checking current in-game text in case a later patch changes details.
- Search village ruins. Look for large, two-story buildings and check for deep pits that may lead to Hidden Tunnels.
- Explore the tunnels for moulds. The guide reports moulds used to make Intricate Keys or upgrade gear.
- Use an Intricate Key on Morkhalla. The key opens a Morkhalla door.
- Repeat the tunnel and Morkhalla process three times. The guide says this yields enough Jotun raids and Malicious Blood for the next step.
- Summon Kall Fimbulbringer. Offer three Malicious Blood at the Strange Bowl. The reported rewards are Sacrificial Blood and Crown Jewel.
The tunnel locations, key use, repetition count, summoning materials, and rewards above come from the secondary guide, not Iron Gate’s abbreviated launch notes. The guide does not supply exact combat tactics, a guaranteed route, or gear rankings.

Will the Deep North appear in an older world?
It can, but newly added fixed content—such as terrain, buildings, or dungeons—applies only to areas no player has explored. Iron Gate defines an unexplored area as one where no player has set foot, including an approximate radius of 500 metres. For an old save, look in unvisited parts of the world; starting a new world is the alternative if you want to explore from a fresh map. Iron Gate explains this in its world-generation FAQ.

- No exact minimum armor, weapon, resistance, or skill threshold for entering the Deep North.
- No tested best-in-slot build, damage comparison, or optimal gathering route.
- No complete crafting reference for every named resource.
Use the biome checklist and dungeon chain to orient exploration, but avoid treating them as a complete crafting wiki or a verified combat prescription.
