Use screenshots to show a font doing real work, not just sitting in an alphabet preview. A strong listing pairs a clear specimen with at least one realistic use—such as packaging, a mock logo, an advertisement, or a web layout—then explains the typeface’s actual glyphs, weights, language support, and OpenType features. Keep the images coherent, readable at thumbnail size, accurate, and cleared for use.
Why screenshots help buyers evaluate a font
A specimen tells a buyer what the letters look like; an in-use image helps them picture the typeface in a project. MyFonts says realistic imagery improves the customer experience and often leads to increased sales, drawing on user testing, traffic analysis, and customer feedback. Its published guidance does not provide a survey date, sample size, or numerical sales effect, so treat this as the marketplace’s qualitative rationale rather than a guaranteed conversion lift.
Do not make the image set a collection of unrelated decorative graphics. Each image should answer a buyer question: How does the font read in a word or phrase? What makes its design distinctive? How could it look on a product, identity, or page? What features are included?
Plan a small, coordinated image sequence
Start with plausible uses
Choose use cases that fit the font’s real style and capabilities. A display serif might suit an editorial cover or packaging; a script face might suit a fictional identity or label. Monotype advises matching imagery, color, and use cases to the font’s name and design. Give each image a distinct job
- Practical specimen: show representative words, punctuation, numerals, or characters large enough to inspect.
- Realistic use: place the actual font in a believable mock logo, package, advertisement, or layout.
- Feature or mood image: highlight a genuine alternate, ligature, weight range, or the visual character of the family.
Keep a related palette and visual theme across the series, but vary the content. A set that repeats one composition may look consistent yet leave buyers with unanswered questions.
Make the design work at thumbnail size
Marketplace cards and search results can shrink artwork substantially. Make the most important type large, keep layouts simple, and preserve crisp edges. Avoid stretching, blur, pixelation, busy backgrounds, and tiny explanatory text. Check the image both at its full size and at the size buyers are likely to see while browsing.

A screenshot is useful only if it proves what it appears to prove. If the image is meant to show your font on a live site, confirm that site genuinely renders the font. A similar-looking fallback font is not evidence of use. Check the captured page for cookie notices, popups, chat widgets, missing assets, and text that becomes unreadable at the final display size.

Simple do-it-yourself workflow
- Select a page you control or have permission to use. Confirm that it visibly uses the exact font family and relevant weight.
- Open the page at the intended viewport. Use a desktop or mobile size that keeps the important text prominent; avoid cropping away context that makes the example credible.
- Capture the page. Use your browser’s screenshot feature or a screenshot tool. If the page loads content lazily, scroll through it first and confirm the intended content has appeared.
- Inspect the result. Check that the font rendered correctly, text is not obscured, and no consent UI or transient error makes the image misleading.
- Prepare the image for the destination. Crop only where allowed, retain the aspect ratio, and export to a format and dimensions accepted by the target marketplace.

Check marketplace requirements before upload
Image rules belong to a particular marketplace and placement, not to font listings universally. MyFonts’ published material gives the following specifications, but its two pages differ in wording about formats and count. Check the current submission interface for the field you are using before preparing a batch.

Google Fonts’ contributor guide instead suggests 1–8 images and requires contributors to have full rights to submitted images. It describes placing supplied images in the font specimen’s About section and says images may be used in social posts around new releases or major upgrades. These are Google Fonts-specific practices, not general marketplace rules.
Write listing copy that matches the images
Images can show a feature, but the listing should name it clearly and accurately. MyFonts recommends useful details such as glyph count, OpenType support, stylistic alternates, swashes, ligatures, special characters, language support, and distinctions among weights. Describe only what the font actually includes; a specimen image should not imply broader coverage or features than buyers receive.
- State the included family styles or weights and distinguish them clearly.
- Identify relevant alternates, ligatures, swashes, or other OpenType features when present.
- Describe special characters and language coverage accurately.
- Use accessible, direct wording rather than relying on an image to communicate technical details.
Protect accuracy and image rights
MyFonts warns against misleading presentation, misspellings, inappropriate content, and third-party brand names or copyrighted products used without permission. Google Fonts requires contributors to hold the rights to submitted images. Apply those checks to both designed mockups and screenshots: a public webpage is not automatically free to reuse in a commercial listing.

The screenshot shows a fallback font
The page may not have loaded its webfont, may be using a different family, or may have requested a weight the site does not serve. Check the page’s font settings and network-loaded assets, then capture again only after confirming the intended font is rendered. Do not label a visual lookalike as proof of the font’s use.

The type is too small or hard to read
Simplify the scene, enlarge the key words, and reduce competing labels or decorative details. Inspect the exported image at thumbnail size; a technically sharp full-size image can still fail when reduced.
A popup, banner, or missing asset distracts from the font
Dismiss overlays where you can do so legitimately, wait for content to load, and take another capture. If you use a capture service, verify its cleanup behavior and the resulting image rather than assuming every page will render identically.
The marketplace rejects the upload
Check the exact image field’s accepted formats, image count, dimensions, and aspect ratio. MyFonts’ own pages are not fully aligned on format and count, so follow the current upload interface rather than assuming a single specification applies everywhere.

- Does the set include a readable specimen and a realistic use example?

- Is the exact font shown, with features and language claims that are true?
