Yes. Varnish can cache HLS and MPEG-DASH because both deliver manifests and media segments over HTTP. The key is to use different freshness rules for changing live manifests and stable segments: keep live manifests short-lived, while completed segments and fixed VoD objects can be cached much longer.
What Varnish caches in an HLS or DASH workflow
Varnish sits between viewers and an origin server. When a requested object is not in cache, Varnish fetches it from the backend; later requests can be served from cache. For adaptive streaming, the objects are typically a playlist or manifest and the media segments it lists. HLS playlists commonly use .m3u8; DASH manifests use .mpd. Segment URLs may end in .ts, .m4s, .mp4, or another packager-specific extension.
The player reads the manifest to learn which segments to request, in what order, and which bitrate options are available. HLS commonly packages media as fragmented MP4 or MPEG-TS. DASH uses an XML MPD and is codec-agnostic. Varnish caches these as HTTP objects; it does not create the streams.
What TTLs to use for live and VoD
The important distinction is whether an object changes after it is published. A live manifest is refreshed as new segments become available, while an already-completed segment is stable. A VoD presentation generally has its full set of segments and a fixed manifest before playback begins.

These are starting points, not universal values: match the manifest TTL to the packager’s update behavior and ensure the cache key distinguishes any variants that must remain separate.
How to shape the Varnish cache policy
A representative policy separates live manifests from media objects instead of assigning one TTL to every URL. Adapt the path rules and cache key to the URLs your packager actually emits.

- Match the stream objects. Identify manifest extensions such as
.m3u8and.mpd, and segment extensions such as.ts,.mp4, and.m4s. Do not assume every service uses the same extensions. - Set a short lifetime for live manifests. Match the live path, such as
/live/if that reflects your URL layout, and apply a short TTL based on the target segment duration. - Give stable media objects longer lifetimes. Apply long TTLs to completed segments and fixed VoD assets so repeat requests do not unnecessarily reach the origin.
- Review cookies and cache keys before sharing objects. Removing cookies can prevent needless cache fragmentation, but only do so when the authentication design permits shared caching. Preserve distinctions for any user-specific or access-controlled response.
Varnish Enterprise tutorials may use commercial components and enterprise-specific VCL features. Check that a configuration matches your Varnish edition before applying it; an example written for Enterprise components is not automatically portable to the open-source Varnish Cache daemon.
Can Varnish stream a response before the origin finishes?
Yes. Varnish can send bytes to the client while the backend fetch is still underway, which can help when an origin produces live chunks incrementally. Varnish Software’s content-streaming documentation says the default value of beresp.do_stream is true; VCL can disable streaming for selected transactions.

There is a failure trade-off: if the backend stops mid-fetch while streaming is enabled, Varnish cannot replace bytes already sent. It can hang up, leaving the client with a partial response. With buffering, Varnish can detect the backend failure before returning the response and send a 503 instead. Choose the behavior with the player and origin failure modes in mind.
When a CDN or Varnish Enterprise makes sense
A single cache node is not a realistic storage and throughput plan for a large video catalogue or high audience concurrency. Varnish Software recommends a CDN architecture with enough cache storage and compute for the workload. The open-source Varnish Cache daemon provides the core HTTP reverse-cache behavior; Varnish Enterprise’s Massive Storage Engine (MSE) and persistence features are positioned for multi-terabyte edge datasets.

Varnish’s brochure describes its Streaming Server/MSE positioning as able to “Store 100TB+ at the edge.” That is a vendor capability claim, not an independently verified benchmark. Treat capacity and throughput as deployment requirements to validate for your own object sizes, request patterns, and hardware rather than assuming a product claim guarantees a particular workload.

Varnish is the HTTP caching and delivery layer in this design. It does not replace encoding, packaging, DRM or key delivery, the origin, or the player. When choosing HLS or DASH, evaluate the manifest format and device support, codec flexibility, segment and container format, DRM integration, latency target, and operational tooling for your service. Varnish can cache either protocol; protocol and playback decisions remain elsewhere in the streaming stack.
