Use GitLab’s v4 REST endpoint POST /projects (normally /api/v4/projects) with an authorized token. Provide a name or path, optionally choose a namespace and visibility, and decide whether GitLab should initialize the repository with a README.
Endpoint and authentication
Send an authenticated POST request to the Projects API. On a typical GitLab installation, the complete path is:

GitLab’s API reference uses the PRIVATE-TOKEN header. Use credentials accepted by your GitLab deployment, keep the token out of source control and logs, and ensure the caller is allowed to create projects in the chosen namespace. GitLab.com, Self-Managed, and Dedicated deployments can differ in administrator policy and supported attributes, so check the live reference for the target instance.

Required naming fields
Supply at least one of name and path. If path is omitted, GitLab derives the repository URL slug from name, typically lowercasing it and replacing spaces with dashes.

Set both when the display name and URL slug need to differ. Validate uniqueness and naming rules before making the request so automation can produce a clear error.

Choosing the project namespace
Personal namespace
Omit namespace_id to place the project in the authenticated user’s personal namespace.
Group or subgroup
Set namespace_id to the numeric ID of the target group or subgroup. The token’s user must have permission to create projects there, and administrators may restrict project creation even when the API request is correctly formed.

Setting visibility explicitly
GitLab documents three visibility values:

When visibility matters, send the value explicitly rather than relying on an instance default.
Blank repository, README initialization, or import
Initialize with a README
Set initialize_with_readme to true when you want GitLab to create a repository containing a README. This also creates a default branch and enables cloning. The API requires initialize_with_readme=true when you set default_branch.

Create an empty repository
Leave README initialization disabled or omitted when another process will add the first commit, or when you need to control the initial repository contents yourself.
Import an existing repository
Provide a non-empty import_url to import from an existing repository. Do not combine it with initialize_with_readme=true; GitLab warns that the combination can result in a “not a git repository” error.

Recommended implementation sequence
- Confirm the deployment host and API version path, normally
/api/v4. - Choose the personal namespace or resolve the group/subgroup’s numeric namespace ID.
- Select a unique, valid
nameand, if needed, an explicitpath. - Set the required visibility instead of inheriting an unknown instance default.
- Choose one repository-start option: blank, README initialization, or import. Do not combine README initialization with a non-empty import URL.
- Send the authenticated
POST /projectsrequest and handle validation, authorization, and policy errors. - Store the returned project ID or path and repository URL for subsequent automation.
- Verify the returned visibility, namespace, and repository state when later steps depend on them.
Common failure points
- Namespace authorization: the namespace ID can be valid while the caller lacks permission to create a project there.
- Instance policy: an administrator can restrict project creation or available visibility levels.
- Invalid path: leading or trailing special characters and consecutive special characters violate path rules.
- Conflicting initialization: README initialization and a non-empty import URL should not be sent together.
- Unsupported or restricted attributes: optional fields can be tier-gated, deprecated, release-specific, or unavailable on a particular deployment; check that instance’s current Projects API reference before relying on them.
What to verify after creation
Use the response as the source of truth. Confirm the numeric project ID, namespace-qualified path, visibility, default branch (when initialized), and HTTP and SSH repository URLs. Follow-up API operations should use those returned values rather than reconstructing a slug or assuming the project landed in the intended namespace.
