The camel-quarkus-couchdb extension lets a Camel Quarkus application consume CouchDB changes and perform document operations such as get, save, update, and delete. The extension is listed as stable, but that status does not mean it supports every CouchDB server version: Apache Camel’s component documentation explicitly says CouchDB 3.x is not supported.

What the Camel Quarkus CouchDB component does

The Camel Quarkus extension catalog lists camel-quarkus-couchdb as a stable extension. It packages the Apache Camel CouchDB component for use in Quarkus applications. The underlying component supports both producer and consumer endpoints.

  • Consume changes: A consumer watches CouchDB changesets and sends insert, update, and delete events into a Camel route.
  • Work with documents: A producer route can retrieve a document by ID, save or update a document, and delete a document using the documented method header.
  • Address multiple databases: Create separate endpoints for different databases or CouchDB instances.

For consumers, update and delete events can be enabled or disabled independently; both are emitted by default. Messages carry change metadata, while producer operations set headers that downstream route processors can use.

How to add and configure the extension

Add the camel-quarkus-couchdb extension using the version aligned with the Camel Quarkus release selected for your application. The Apache Camel component reference documents the Maven artifact pattern and advises keeping the component and Camel core versions aligned. Avoid choosing a version solely because a catalog page displays a version entry; use the release line for your application.

Quarkus configuration has a build-time augmentation phase and a runtime initialization phase. The extension integrates the component into that lifecycle. Component settings can be supplied through application.properties and Camel Quarkus properties. Use property placeholders for hostnames, credentials, and other environment-specific settings instead of putting those values directly in route source.

Endpoint URI and the options that matter

The documented endpoint form is couchdb:protocol:hostname:port/database. Protocol is http or https; hostname and database are required, and the default port is 5984. For example, a route can start with:

from("couchdb:http://localhost:5984/orders")

For deployments, replace the local host with a property placeholder and keep credentials out of source control. These are the options most likely to affect route behavior:

Option Purpose and documented default
createDatabase Creates the database if it is missing.
updates Controls whether update events are emitted by a consumer. Enabled by default.
deletes Controls whether delete events are emitted by a consumer. Enabled by default.
heartbeat Change-feed keep-alive interval; default is 30,000 ms.
maxMessagesPerPoll Maximum messages per poll; default is 10. Zero or a negative value means unlimited.
style Revision style; default is main_only. Use all_docs when leaf revisions are needed.

Consult the component reference for the full option list and the exact URI spelling for the Camel version in use.

Consume CouchDB changes in a route

Point a consumer endpoint at the database whose changes should enter the route. Query options can control event filtering and database creation. For example, the endpoint form above can be extended with the options supported by the selected component version; set updates or deletes to exclude those event types when the route does not need them.

The component exposes change metadata through headers, including the database, sequence, document ID, document revision, method, and resume action. Use these values when downstream processors need to identify a changed document or manage processing state. The component supports the changes feed; design error handling and any durable processing guarantees around the requirements of your application rather than assuming that consuming changes alone provides them.

Write, update, retrieve, and delete documents

For producer operations, the message body is the CouchDB document. A Java String body must contain valid JSON; a Gson JsonElement is also accepted. Unsupported body types fail. When updating a document, include its id and rev fields in the JSON payload.

  • Save: Send a supported document body to the producer endpoint.
  • Update: Send valid JSON containing both the document ID and revision.
  • Retrieve: Use the documented GET method with the document ID.
  • Delete: Use the documented method header for the delete operation.

Producer operations set headers after persistence, including document and operation metadata. Check the component reference for the precise header constants and method values used by your Camel release.

Check CouchDB server compatibility before deployment

The Apache Camel CouchDB component page states, “CouchDB 3.x is not supported.” See the official compatibility note before adopting the extension. A stable Quarkus extension indicates the extension’s stability classification; it does not override the component’s server-version limitation.

Record the CouchDB server version in deployment planning and verify it against the component documentation for the exact Camel release you intend to run. Do not treat a CouchDB 3.x server as supported unless the applicable official documentation changes that compatibility statement.
