Sub-gigahertz wireless can connect IoT devices over long distances, but “sub-GHz” is a frequency range, not a single network or guarantee of coverage. The right choice depends on whether you need a low-power wide-area link such as LoRaWAN, a managed outdoor mesh such as Wi-SUN FAN, or carrier-operated cellular service such as NB-IoT. Before choosing, check local radio rules and verify coverage where each device will actually be installed.

What does sub-GHz mean for IoT?

Sub-GHz refers to radio frequencies below 1 GHz. It covers multiple regional bands and technologies; two devices operating below 1 GHz are not necessarily compatible, even if their nominal frequencies are similar. Their radio settings, protocol, network architecture, and regional profile must also match.

IEEE 802.15.4-2024 describes PHY and MAC specifications for low-data-rate wireless connectivity, including fixed, portable, and moving devices with no or very limited battery consumption requirements. The standard and its amendments cover different physical-layer options and region-specific bands. Standards compliance at one layer does not, by itself, guarantee that products interoperate at every layer.

What is the best long-range wireless technology for IoT?

There is no universally best option. Start with the network you can operate or access, then check whether it meets the application’s data, power, coverage, resilience, and service requirements.

Option Network approach Best fit to investigate Key constraint
LoRaWAN Low-power wide-area network using LoRa radio technology and regional network parameters. Low-rate telemetry where a public LoRaWAN network is available or you can deploy and manage network infrastructure. Regional channel plans and radio rules apply; actual coverage and useful payload rate depend on the deployment.
Wi-SUN FAN Outdoor field-area mesh in which devices can relay traffic toward collection nodes. Large infrastructure networks such as metering, distribution equipment, streetlights, and traffic systems. Requires a planned mesh and compatible ecosystem; local band and equipment requirements still apply.
NB-IoT Cellular-based, standards-based service deployed over operator networks. Low-data-rate sensors where operator coverage and service terms suit the installation and device. Depends on cellular availability and the operator’s deployment; it is not a self-organizing unlicensed mesh.
Other IEEE 802.15.4 sub-GHz systems Standards-based radio and MAC options whose interoperability depends on the selected profile and implementation. Projects with an existing installed system or a required interoperability profile. Confirm the exact PHY, regional band, protocol layers, and compatible products rather than relying on the standard number alone.

These are architectural distinctions, not a vendor ranking or a current market-share comparison. Compare network ownership or availability, topology, payload size and reporting interval, downlink needs, latency, device energy budget, mobility, resilience, security and certification, infrastructure cost, and spectrum compliance. A maximum-range figure alone cannot answer those questions.

Choose LoRaWAN when low-rate wide-area telemetry is the priority

LoRa is the radio technology; LoRaWAN is the network protocol and ecosystem built around LoRa radio links. The terms are related but not interchangeable. A LoRa radio module does not automatically provide a complete LoRaWAN device or network: the implementation must use compatible regional parameters and protocol support.

The LoRa Alliance’s RP2-1.0.2 Regional Parameters material covers regional operation, including EU868, US915, and AU915, and describes LR-FHSS support. In that release-specific material, the page says that 162 bit/s and 325 bit/s are the LR-FHSS rates currently implemented. These values describe the cited implementation context, not a general throughput promise for every LoRaWAN device.

Choose Wi-SUN FAN when a managed outdoor mesh fits

Wi-SUN FAN is intended for outdoor field infrastructure. The Wi-SUN Alliance identifies smart electricity, water, and gas meters; distribution switches and substations; streetlights; parking and traffic lights; and EV charging stations among its application examples. In its FAQ, the Alliance explains that mesh devices can pass data and commands toward collection nodes through nearby devices; that routing can help the network work around a nearby node that is disconnected or has lost power.

Choose NB-IoT when cellular service is available at the sites

ITU-T Y.4218 (05/2023) describes NB-IoT as a 3GPP-standardized cellular option deployed over existing cellular networks for low-data-rate sensor applications, including in a rural-service context. That makes operator coverage, subscription or service terms, and the operator’s regional deployment part of the technical decision. Confirm service at the actual installation points rather than assuming a broad coverage map guarantees a usable connection indoors or at a remote site.

How far can LoRa reach?

The International Telecommunication Union’s 2021 comparison table lists LoRa at 868/915 MHz, with an example maximum range of 15 km and maximum data rate of 50 kb/s. The same table lists NB-IoT at 700–900 MHz, with a range of less than 35 km, downlink of 170 kb/s, and uplink of 250 kb/s. Those are entries in an ITU comparison table, not guaranteed system limits or a prediction for a particular site.

The table does not establish the antenna, mounting height, terrain, building penetration, interference, transmit-power limit, receiver sensitivity, or packet-success target for your deployment. It also does not establish a universally applicable battery life, cost, or measured range. A project needs a link budget based on its chosen equipment and local rules, followed by a field survey at representative installation points. Check whether the application’s uplink and downlink needs fit the actual system rather than inferring performance from a maximum figure.

For example, the Wi-SUN Alliance FAQ lists these major-market bands for Wi-SUN: North America 902–928 MHz; Europe 863–870 MHz and 870–876 MHz; India 865–867 MHz; Japan 920–928 MHz; Singapore 866–869 MHz and 902–928 MHz; and Brazil 902–928 MHz. These are the Alliance’s listed Wi-SUN bands, not a substitute for checking the rules applicable to a particular product and deployment.

The ITU Radio Regulations, 2024 edition, incorporates revisions adopted through WRC-23 and provides an international framework. National requirements govern the practical deployment. Before installation, verify the current national regulator’s allocations, permitted power, channel-access or duty-cycle conditions, equipment approval, and the exact regional profile for the chosen technology.

How to make the choice for a real deployment

  1. Define the traffic. Record what each device sends, how often it reports, whether it must receive commands, and the acceptable latency and packet-delivery target. Distinguish small periodic sensor messages from applications needing frequent or larger exchanges.
  2. Map the sites. Identify installation locations, building or terrain obstacles, device mobility, and the collection points or operator network that must reach them. For cellular IoT, verify operator service at each site. For a mesh, determine whether the planned nodes can form the needed routes.
  3. Decide who provides the network. Establish whether a suitable public LoRaWAN or cellular service is available, or whether your organization will deploy and manage network infrastructure. Treat mesh planning and carrier service as different operating models.
  4. Check power, resilience, and security needs. Compare the device’s energy budget and maintenance interval with the intended reporting pattern. Decide how the system should behave when a link or node fails, how devices are authenticated and managed, and what certification the product and deployment require. The sources do not establish a technology-wide battery-life or security ranking.
  5. Confirm the regional profile and legal conditions. Match the product’s supported band and protocol parameters to the deployment jurisdiction, and verify current radio and equipment requirements with the relevant regulator and technology documentation.
  6. Validate before scaling. Test representative devices at the actual mounting locations, measure link performance against the application’s delivery requirements, and revise antenna placement, network layout, or technology choice if coverage is inadequate.

What to check when prototyping

Once the architecture and region are selected, a LoRaWAN development board or sub-GHz LoRa radio module can be a relevant prototype component. Match its frequency plan, supported protocol stack, antenna connector and design, host interface, and jurisdictional certification to the intended deployment. No particular board, brand, or seller is established as suitable by the technology choice alone.
