Playwright is useful for browser automation and crawling pages you’re authorized to access, but it is not a supported way to solve Cloudflare production challenges. If a site challenges or blocks your crawler, treat that as a stop signal: check for an official API or approved crawl route, or ask the site owner for permission or an allowlist. Changing browser fingerprints, rotating proxies, or automating a production challenge does not turn denied access into authorized access.
Can Playwright bypass Cloudflare?
No—not as a supported method for solving a production challenge. Cloudflare’s supported-browser documentation explicitly says: “Browser automation frameworks, such as Selenium, Puppeteer, Playwright, and Cypress, are not supported for solving production challenges.” Cloudflare’s supported browsers guidance also points developers testing their own Turnstile integration to test keys. Testing a system you control with test credentials is different from trying to pass a production challenge on someone else’s site.
Playwright automates a browser; it does not grant permission to collect data or guarantee access to a protected page. Cloudflare describes Playwright as a tool commonly used for frontend tests, screenshots, and crawling. Its Browser Run integration adapts a Cloudflare fork of Playwright for use in Cloudflare’s environment; that is not a way to defeat Cloudflare rules on unrelated websites. Why “Cloudflare protection” can mean different things
There is no single Cloudflare wall with one response or one remedy. Depending on the site’s products and configuration, a request can encounter a challenge or block from a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule, Bot Management, Bot Fight Mode, Turnstile, HTTP DDoS protection, or Under Attack Mode. Cloudflare also describes JavaScript Detections, which gather client-side signals and make a result available to a site rule. That is not a general-purpose public CAPTCHA-solving interface. The visible outcome might be an interstitial, a widget, a managed challenge, or an access denial. It can depend on the site’s settings and on which protection is applied. A challenge is not an invitation to automate around the site owner’s decision.
Choose an authorized route before writing a crawler
First establish who controls the site and what access the intended task permits. For third-party data, look for an official API, export, or documented integration. If browser crawling is necessary, check the site’s terms and robots.txt, and ask the owner when permission or scope is unclear. A technically reachable page is not necessarily one you are authorized to collect.
Cloudflare describes robots.txt as a voluntary communication of crawler preferences: it does not technically prevent a crawler from accessing content. A safe Playwright workflow for permitted pages
The example below visits a page, extracts its title and visible text, and closes the browser. Use it only for a site and scope you are allowed to crawl. It deliberately does not attempt to solve challenges, disguise automation, or continue after a denial.
Install Playwright
In a new Node.js project, install Playwright and its browser:

Create crawl.js. Replace the example URL with a page you are authorized to access. Keep the run small, and stop if the response indicates a challenge or access denial.

});Run it with node crawl.js. The status check is a basic guard, not a complete challenge detector: a site may present a challenge in a response that does not use those status codes. If the browser displays a challenge, CAPTCHA, or denial, stop the automated run rather than trying to pass it.
Keep a crawl bounded
- Use the site’s published API quotas or crawl limits when available; do not invent a higher limit because a request succeeds.
- Start with a small set of URLs and a low request rate. Avoid overlapping runs that multiply load.
- Collect only the fields needed for the permitted purpose, and avoid repeatedly fetching unchanged pages.
- Record failures and stop on challenge or denial responses. Ask the owner for an approved route or allowlisting if the task requires access.
If you control the Cloudflare-protected site
For your own site, use Cloudflare’s configuration and test paths rather than treating production challenges as something a crawler should defeat. Cloudflare’s scraping-detection documentation describes detection IDs for suspicious request patterns by ASN and JA4 fingerprint. It also advises excluding API paths from rules that issue challenges when those API calls should not be challenged. Troubleshooting a permitted crawl
Navigation times out
A timeout means the page did not meet the selected navigation condition within the configured period; it does not prove that Cloudflare blocked it. Check the URL, network access, and whether the site is slow. If the site’s rules permit another wait condition or a longer timeout, adjust it conservatively. Do not use repeated retries to push through a challenge or denial.
The page loads but the expected content is missing
Some content may render after the initial document event or only after an interaction. Confirm the page’s normal behavior manually, then wait for a specific content selector if that is permitted and documented for the task. If the content remains unavailable because the site presents a challenge, stop and seek an approved route.

You receive a 403, 429, challenge, or denial
A 403 or challenge commonly signals that access is not being granted; a 429 indicates a rate-limit response. Stop the crawl, reduce or cease requests, and check the published API or crawl rules. Contact the site owner for permission or allowlisting if necessary. Do not rotate proxies, alter fingerprints, automate challenge flows, or transfer browser cookies as a workaround.
An API is challenged even though browser pages work
If you operate the site, inspect the Cloudflare rule actions and scope. Cloudflare’s scraping-detection guidance specifically notes that API paths may need exclusion from rules that issue challenges when those API calls should not be challenged. - Playwright can automate permitted browser tasks, but Cloudflare does not support it for solving production challenges.

Does robots.txt technically block Playwright?
