Phing automates repeatable work in PHP projects through an XML buildfile: targets group work, and tasks perform it. You can use it to run tests, manage files, execute SQL, interact with source control, or generate documentation. The Phing project describes it as “a PHP project build system or build tool based on Apache Ant.”
How Phing organizes a build
A Phing buildfile defines a project and its targets. Each target is a named unit of work made up of tasks; tasks are the executable actions configured in the file. Properties provide values that tasks can use, such as paths or other configuration.
This structure separates the work from the command used to start it: a buildfile can define several targets, while a developer or automation system chooses which target to run. Command-line property values override values set inside the buildfile, which is useful when the same build needs different inputs in different environments.
Install Phing with Composer
The official guide recommends Composer for installing Phing. Add it as a development dependency when it is needed for project builds rather than at runtime, then install dependencies:

composer installThe 3.* constraint is the guide’s example, not a universal recommendation. Choose a version constraint consistent with the project’s dependency policy and commit the Composer lockfile when that is part of the team’s practice. Composer is one of the project’s supported installation routes; the official guide also documents using the Phar distribution with PHP. The website marks PEAR and manual installation as deprecated. See the official installation guide.
Run a build or select a target
From the directory containing the buildfile, run phing. With no target name, Phing attempts the default target specified by the project element. To run a particular target, append its name:

phing testUse the target names defined in your own buildfile; test is only an example. The user guide also documents choosing a buildfile explicitly and setting properties from the command line. Those property values override values declared in the buildfile. Consult the command-line usage documentation for the relevant options.

- Running PHPUnit tests and generating reports.
- Transforming, copying, or otherwise managing files and directories.
- Executing SQL.
- Performing source-control operations.
- Generating documentation.
These are capabilities in the project’s task catalogue, not a guarantee that every task is available without additional requirements or configuration. Check the Phing project site for task documentation.
Phing 3 version and PHP requirements
At the time of the project information checked on October 5, 2026, the official site lists Phing 3.1.2 as the latest stable release and 2.17.4 as the latest legacy release; it says there will be no further releases in the 2.x series. Packagist records 3.1.2 as released on February 6, 2026. The repository and package metadata specify PHP 8.1 or later for Phing 3, with XML-related PHP extensions also listed as package requirements. Because releases and dependencies can change, verify the current metadata before pinning or upgrading: official Phing site, Packagist package metadata.

Plan a Phing 2 to 3 upgrade carefully
Phing 3 includes breaking changes compared with Phing 2. Before upgrading an existing project, read the project’s UPGRADING.md and test the buildfile and any custom tasks against the intended version. Do not assume a build that works with Phing 2 will work unchanged with Phing 3.
When Phing makes sense
Phing is worth considering when a PHP project needs repeatable build commands and the team wants to define them in XML while retaining the ability to extend the build with PHP task classes. Its catalogue can support workflows spanning tests, file operations, SQL, source control, and documentation.

Compare tools against the actual project rather than assuming one is best for every team. Relevant questions include:
- Does the team want XML build definitions and PHP-based task extensions?
- Does the tool fit the project’s existing ecosystem and conventions?
- Are its runtime requirements and dependencies suitable for development and automation environments?
- Does it provide the integrations the required workflow needs?
- What compatibility and migration work will a version change require?
The available project information establishes Phing’s capabilities, not a comparative verdict against other build tools. The right choice depends on those project-specific requirements.
