How can you use NotebookLM to prepare for a job interview? Build a notebook around one role, then use its source-grounded chat to identify likely questions, locate evidence in your own experience, and shape answer outlines you can practice in your own voice. Google’s current Help Center calls the service Gemini Notebook; its documented chat features support this workflow, but they do not guarantee better interview or hiring results.
Set up a source-based notebook for one interview
Keep the workspace focused on a specific role so the questions and examples stay relevant. Add the job description, your résumé, selected work samples, and reliable notes about the employer. Upload only material you are permitted to share.
Notebook chat can answer questions using uploaded sources, and you can choose which sources it uses. Responses include citations that can be opened to inspect the supporting text in context. Those citations make it easier to check where an answer came from; they do not guarantee the answer is complete or correct.
Turn the job posting into questions and evidence
- Ask for a role-specific question bank. Request questions grouped by the competencies or responsibilities in the job posting. Ask the model to identify the source supporting each competency and to flag areas where your materials provide no evidence.
- Find a real example for each question. Ask it to locate relevant details in your résumé or work samples, organized as situation, action, and result. Include a measurable outcome only when one of your sources actually states it.
- Check the citations. Open the cited source text and confirm that it supports the claim. Remove or correct details that are missing, overstated, or inaccurate.
- Draft an outline, not a script. Ask for a concise structure, then rewrite it in your own words. A useful answer should reflect what you actually did, not what the model thinks a strong candidate might have done.
- Probe for weak spots. Ask, “What detail would an interviewer likely probe next?” or “Which claim in this draft lacks support in my sources?” Use the replies to decide what you need to clarify or verify.
Use follow-up practice to sharpen tough answers
Once you have an outline, rehearse it aloud. Practice answering the question directly, explaining your specific contribution, and describing a result only when you can support it. If an answer sounds generic, add a concrete detail from the source material or choose a different example that better fits the question.

Chat settings let users configure conversational style and response length, including a custom style. You can request a concise interviewer-style follow-up or ask for a more detailed critique of an outline, then inspect any factual claims against the citations. Google cautions that Gemini Notebook can make mistakes and asks users to double-check its responses; it should help structure practice, not supply an unquestioned answer.
Choose chat or Audio Overview for the kind of practice you need
Chat is suited to direct question-and-answer work with source citations. Audio Overviews offer alternative ways to review material. Google’s help page lists four formats; the best choice depends on whether you want to hear a recap, critique, or contrasting perspectives rather than actively test an answer.

For an Audio Overview, Google documents controls for selecting a language, providing a prompt, and choosing Shorter, Default, or Longer length in English. Interactive mode lets a listener join and ask hosts follow-up questions; Google currently documents that interactive experience as English-only. Audio Overviews, including voices, are AI-generated and may contain inaccuracies or audio glitches. Use audio to support listening and recall, not to establish that an answer is correct. Continue to rehearse in your own voice.
Keep the answers accurate and personal
- Do not invent experience. If the résumé or work samples do not support an example or result, leave it out or find a real example elsewhere.
- Distinguish evidence from suggestions. A likely question or proposed follow-up is a practice aid, not a prediction of what an interviewer will ask.
- Check the original context. Read cited passages rather than relying on a summary, and correct any errors before using an answer.
- Protect sensitive material. Use only documents and notes you are allowed to upload.
- Keep your voice. Use generated outlines to organize your thinking, then explain your experience naturally and accurately.
What to know about the name and availability
The Google Help Center pages reviewed for this article currently use the name Gemini Notebook, while NotebookLM remains a familiar name for the service. Product names, interface labels, feature availability, and account requirements can change, so check the current Google interface and Help Center before relying on a specific control. The documented features describe what the product can do; they do not establish that using it improves interview performance or hiring outcomes.
